I agree, I enjoy talking with you guys that enjoy hunting with Hill longbows.

I wonder if we can get our own mod. someone to look over this thread.

We've pretty much have that since the inception and Rob D(thanks) has done a stellar job. Besides, aren't we all ADULTS here-we should be perfectly capable of moderating ourselves. The rules are simple and easy to folow. Keep on task, resize your pictures to NO more than 640 pixels for width and no selling on this thread, or any other for that matter.

I see a reference to Hill bows being 3-4#s over what is marked. After reading this I put my Wesley Special on a scale. It is marked 60 @ 28, but at 28" my scale shows 65#. No wonder I am having a tough time getting to anchor. Is this the norm for all the Hill bows? If so I will have to adjust my next order accordingly.

i can only speak for myself ... yes.  i order 5# lighter than the target weight.

Thanks Rob. I did not know that bit of info. I bought this bow from their in stock list. I should have done a little more research before ordering it. Lesson learned.

David Mitchell

Yes, that's the norm from what I experience and I have 5 Hills on the rack.  The only one that is on the mark weight-wise is one 40 years old made when John Schultz was the bowyer for HHA.
The years accumulate on old friendships like tree rings, during which time a kind of unspoken care and loyalty accrue between men.

The last bow I got from HHA was only one pound heavy. The compound shop guy swore his scale was dead on and I got ripped off, because it should have been marked dead on. I did order the bow from 51 to 55 At 26. I thought 53 was pretty close to what I ordered. I don't understand how they can be always consistently heavy? Another midwest bowyer I know is consistently light, I don't understand that either.  i ordered a blank to target 55 at 26" I had to pull a Schulz on it to get it to 57.5 at 26, but oh my, what a 57.5 at 26 I got, I am not complaining. I could do some trimming closer to the wedge to get it down, but there is no point in messing with a good thing for two and a half pounds.

Kelly-

Your correct, Rob and all the mods do a great job. I've also been here since the thread started, and I agree that we are all adults.

However, since the thread started we have picked up alot of guys that are new and may not be aware of the No more than 640 pixel size. I would hate to see the thread deleted. We have a lot of good inmformation and a wonderful collection of pics of Howard Hill and Hill style bows. I really enjoy coming to this thread because everyone shares the same passion of hunting with a Hill bow.
I used to be part of the Howard Hill Longbowman list that Dick Wrightman ran for several years.
It too was a great place to hang out with all Hill enthusists.

IF YOU POST A PIC WIDER THAN 640, THE ENTIRE THREAD *MAY* GET DELETED ...

... and you will be the reason why.
With all due respect, I find that way of thinking just absolute foolishness!!!

We, as individual posters have no control what soever over what other people post yet the Admin threatens to punish us all just like little school kids. I'm sorry but I just don't get it.

For Admin to consider deleting one of the biggest and most information filled threads on the site because some people post images bigger than they should beggars belief. By all means delete the posts with the large images but please let common sense prevail and not delete this whole thread over such a petty matter.

I'm sorry if my saying this upsets Admin but I felt someone should say step back and think about your threatened action for a bit before doing something that would IMO be so wrong.

Jeff

Rob DiStefano

jeff,

please reread all of what i post ...

"i will not delete this thread, but can not guarantee that another mod or admin will. i will try to intervene if need be."

rest assured, this thread will not go away, and it's been safely archived weekly for months.

cheers,
rob.

Thanks Rob; I did realize that but I was making the point that there shouldn't be any need for you to intervene as it shouldn't even be considered, IMO.

That is good to know that the thread has been safely archived; thanks for that.

Well it has made it to page 2, lets "set back" TTT

640? more than enough to get the point.

Hey Sunset-H., how much weight are you swinging back back on those Elk hunts? This guy, is my brothers bow, 45 @27. Helping him from getting the fever before it's too late.

An inch and a quarter backset, is that a Meigs built bow? If so what is the actual weight, the bow we had that Tim built was dead on for its declared weight. 'Was' is the proper term, as it is now 9 pounds lighter. It was 66" long had the 1&1/4" back set and was 51@26". It has killed a number of deer, but I would not want to use it for elk.

swampthing

It's a T. Kramer. Palm swells and all, 69" 48# @28 Big 5.

I liked the grip on the Big 5 Kramer I had. I was reminded of that when a fellow tried to sell it to me this past summer. Apparently, he did not either know my name or bothered to read the name on the bow. Killed a good number of rabbits and pheasants with it, no deer. At 85 pounds at my draw it had a pretty good thump as well.
