Hey guys, any of you make your own tabs?

What leather do you like to use?

Also do you prefer a (thick enough) single or multiple layer construction?

I cut the tongue out of an old pair of Red Ball pac boots...best one I have used lol

all the time, i shoot 3  under so its a bit easier to make than a split finger, i bought 1 fred eicher tab and use it as a pattern, i will never have to but another ever, rich pyle

Cordovan (spelling) leather is very good.

I make my own often. Just made three the other day plus one for a friend.

I use cordovan when I can get my hands on it. I also like to get chrome tanned latigo as it works pretty well.

Whats the criteria on the leather, is being 'slick' pretty much the only option? I say that because if its slick but not thick enough, you just add some behind it right?

Anybody use cordura or anything like that?

I cut mine out of a Kudu cape, from the front leg.  The hair is short and the skin is thicker than the rest of the hide.  I have been shooting it for 3 years now, and it has lost pretty much no hair at all.  Would have NEVER guessed it would last this long.  I shoot probably every other day during off season and pretty much every day during season. The best part is the release is super crisp with that slick hair.

The issue with Cordovan right now is getting it...it appears that Horween, the major supplier, has quit offering it for sale...the commercial Cordovan tabs I currently use are amazing...I cannot imagine a better material for a tab and I have had a considerable number of tabs

Been making my own for years (and for my wife and son). I like a thick tab as I shoot fairly skinny strings, shoot a lot, and never quite understood the need to "feel the string". To me that just leads to a crappy release, sorta like bare fingers. So to answer your question, 8-10 oz. veg tan, about like you would use for a sturdy sheath or holster. Frequently treat with powder scraped off a welder's soapstone pencil.

Cool thanks guys. Thats really cool about the kudu. I have a preference (though with a glove) like you Mahantango and was thinking along the lines you just said. That's what I'll try first.
