A story of Pigs and Peanut butter

For those that don't know, I'm located in the peanut and peanut butter capital of Georgia. Can't make a drive in the country with out seeing evidence of old or new crops. I'm sure that this lends itself to the quantity of fat pigs we have here also.

Now the pigs I speak of are wild boars and not fat boyers although I can also be seen frequenting a jar of peanut butter. Oh yeah, my wife can call me a fat pig and I might call me a fat pig, but I would hope that you wouldn't.

Anyway, a good friend of mine and I have a big lease full of these pigs that think they are pretty smart. I have news for them! No self respecting pig can resist the "Peanut Butter".

My friend "Preacher" (and yes, he is a real Baptist preacher) and I have been setting stands and lights for quite some time. The pigs visit, but seldom during the day light.
NO problem, now that the deer season is waning and the weather is cool, it is time for a surprise.

This week, we will be adding 55 gal barrels of peanut butter to most of our stand sights that are also equipped with lights for night time hogs.

Still no guarantee, but it is certain to consolidate them nearer to where we want them.

There will be more on this as time goes on including pictures.

What color light do you use? White, red, yellow? I would think heat lights are out, don't want to melt the peanut butter...or do you?

Good luck Jim, been using peanut butter myself for years with good luck. I do usually add salt as a consumption limiter. I also like smearig it in the bark of trees(they have to spend lots of time to get it all).

I had a similar discussion the other day on whether or not deer would eat peanut butter. It's illegal to bait here in Tennessee of course but I was just curious. Sounds like a good idea though!

Ha ha. Ok big jim. We need MAJOR clarification here. Are these 55. Gallon drums of PB. OR 55 gallon drums with PB in them? Major difference. #2. If it's a 55 gal drum of PB. WHAT DOES THAT SUCKER WEIGH? And how much is shipping to colorado? Or if I buy more arrows. Does the PB COME FREE with purchase of a few doz?

That's a lot of P butter Jim. Do the pigs squeal when they can't get the PB off the roof of their mouth?

I've used peanut butter for deer once, a long time ago. We just used a 1# jar screwed to a tree. The deer loved it and it was funny watching them contort themselves to get the last bit out of the bottom of the jar.

I bet if your pigs find it, you will be whacking quite a few soon after!

First off, yes it is 55gal drums full of peanut butter...about 400lbs +-. I have done this before, but last year we were unable to get any so we had to be creative.

couple years back, we froze a barrel and cut it in half. THis made it easier to get through the swamp and out to a couple of baits. I had a camera on the barrel set to take pictures too often. It almost appeared to be a video as a porker pushed this 200lb barrel around in circles with his snout. I was no where in site to protect my peanut butter.

Barrels are clean out from when the plants shut down the line. Nothing wrong with it and We are purchasing it for about $75 per barrel.

Sounds resonable, but I have seen pigs decimate an entire barrel in 3 days. They ate the cardboard barrel and only left the metal rings...the rings even had teeth marks in them.

I have used white lite in the past and they worked great except that I believe the bigguns shy from it to a certain degree. I had a whopper!!! ( I believe over 400lbs) come in last Feb. He avoided all but the edge of the light but he did give me a shot. No doubt a dead pig, but I made the mistake of baiting them in their sanctuary. I followed blood for 30 yards and when he shucked the arrow, the blood stopped. Problem was I was already nearly crawling due to the thickness of the brush. Unfortunately never found.

This year we are using red lights. I have been getting some pics, but not many pigs over 250-300lbs. We have only been using corn....the PB will get them running.

Most of this year is for tweaking set ups and checking out the property. We are planning on offering pig hunts in the future and brother have we got em.

It can be difficult to not eat all the bait. Specially if I remember to bring some milk and jam. Put it all on a tortilla and you have breakfast of champions...or at least a bowyer.

This is fun and I ain't even shot yet!
