As one that is always up for DIY projects, I'm curious- does anyone collects scent from the scent glands of deer or elk that they harvest in order to use next season?

As I was packing my partners elk out last week I was thinking about whether this was possible once the animal was dead...if it is possible, how hard is it?

With so many scents on the market, I am thinking its possible...anything one should know in attempting to do this on their own?

Thanks for any info!

Wash before you eat. I have taken out and drained in to a small jar a dead coyotes bladder before. Be real careful. Wash before you eat.
You can hop but you can't hide.
If it was not for rabbits I would never get a buck.

I buried the hock glands of a buck I shot in a fresh scrape nearby and the whole area was tore up the next A.M.,Had several bucks in that day,so I know they do somethings when FRESH.

I have emptied deer bladders several times, put it in a jar and used it for hunting later. Deer seemed to respond to fresh scent better. Thanks, Roy
Maybe it is time to shoot what I have on the rack

I have used buck tarsal glands, fresh and frozen for the following year, with good results.

I would like to collect urine also.  Where do you find the syringes used for this purpose?

Thanks!

I have collected , deer glands, deer urine, from both sexes, even picked up some poop,   I always go over to a freinds kills and rub my hunting pants over there bucks to transfer scent,  this tends to get very fast results from the deer in my areas.

All- Good info! I was thinking about bringing containers when hunting to gather urine or glands from a fresh deer.

If I had a walk in freezer or a cool place I would try to dissect the legs in order to try and obtain the vessels leading to the scent glands. I would imagine there is good scent found there.

Don't suppose anyone has gotten surgical...have they???  :dunno:

I use tarsle glands. Do it all time. Never urine though. Breaks down to fast unless you use it very soon

Be sure and harvest the glands AFTER you have processed all the meat, we generally will remove the lower part of the leg above the gland, and then harvest after.

Remove the urine from the bladder with a hypodermic syringe. Squirt into bottle and repeat until all urine is collected. It's a whole lot less mess.

Good to know- thanks for all the tips. I think I will at least try to harvest the tarsal gland off a deer this year.

Any tricks to keeping it until next year? Freezer? Do you add anything to it to preserve it?
