I truly enjoy this period of the year!
Friends meeting at a diner, tossing breakfast plates to look at topo maps!

Gear lists are exchanged, extra strings are secured, broadheads are sharpened as well as knives...

Anticipation is a good thing! Good luck to all the hunters of Tradgang

I hear you. Elk starts Sept 1, and I have been camping and scouting my area for the past couple of weeks. This morning, I stepped out of my camper to hear a bull bugle in some timber not far away, followed by several cow mews. I tried to catch up to them, but never saw them. I did get an elk serenade for about 45 minutes, however. That'll get you pumped!

It is on us for sure!  Google earth has an early 2013 photo of one of my hunt areas.  Time to "redraw" the map!

Sure is fun! Happy hunting.
There is a place for all God's creatures....right next to the potatoes and gravy.

Happy hunting. I just went through all that and am about to go through it again. In California, we have two separate deer hunts: one in July and one in August. I was fortunate enough to draw a tag for an area I had never hunted before, and I drew another sub tag for a two day hunt within that area. So I had to scout three separate areas using my USGS maps, google earth, BLM land maps, and researching historical fill rates. It is my second favorite part of hunting, following the actual hunt itself of course. Keep us posted on your hunt. I'm 0-2 so far, but had an exciting run with a bachelor herd of black tail last weekend. They really are smarter running as a herd. I wish I could hunt them in rut.

I wish you the best the wilderness can offer. I had too many irons in the fire this year but should you folks plan a return I think its time I hunt an elk.   :archer2:
