Just got home and my jig got here today. I have been watching videos and I under stand how to do it. The problem I have it the jig only goes to 54"s and the first string I am gonna build is for my son and his bow is 48"s can someone tell me how to make his string thanks. My jig is 28"s long and 4"s wide its goes from a 70
" bow to a 54" bow can ya help my son needs a new string .

Chances are the pegs go down in half inch spaces.  So lets
assume you need a 45" string.  Go down 4.5" from the last peg and put a finish nail there.  This will be your spot for a 45" string.

L82HUNT is correct. Every one inch of distance on the center pegs of a Flemish jig reduces or increases string length by two inches. OR, each 1/2" in peg/nail movement increases/reduces string length by 1".

Most (mine is) are actual string length.

Depends.  Mine are actual string length, which is what I would suggest, but some are marked by bow lenght (which makes the string a shot in the dark).

Got it done last night things worked out good built my son the first string it looks pretty good for the first one. As soon as you get your 2 bundles done before you start the twist how long do tag ends need to be. My video said 6 1/2 "s tryed that didnt like it. I watched a video on you tube and that guy does 8 1/2"s I would like to know what ya'll start out with

My tag ends are anywhere from 5-8 inches. Don't notice any difference in performance between the two. I'm sure it's effecting the arrow, but it's probably so minimal that I can't tell without a chrono or high-speed camera.

Yes. Stick with a standard you find that works and allows for a good twist hold on the end loops. Too short and a loop might slip under tension.

I go with 8" every time.

Yep. Forgot to mention that my jig is homemade. I keep the pegs in the same place and adjust my tag ends to lengthen/shorten my strings.

OK guys I am still haveing issues with the string length I have made 4 so far and 2 have been to short 2 were just right with good twist and they look good. I got the serveing down no problems with that. Just the length part.
my jig is also homemade thats the best part the guy I bought it from sent me every thing I needed to get started. I will when I get a little better at it get some d97 or better string for my bows. The strings I have made so far have been for the boys bows. If yall have any video I need to watch could ya post them up it would help. My next build is gonna be a string strecher

What might you have done differently on the two short ones that varied from the two good ones?

A tighter twist = shorter string. As you learn and develop your style of twisting you will have  variances from string to string.

Just got the dvd from a felllow trad ganger its Chad Weavers How to Build a Great Bowstring, Man this has really helped out my string building stuff.  Thanks Shawn Rackley for letting me borrow the DVD.  I think ol Chad is a pretty good ol boy  him and Ron did a great job.

Like said above it takes time to really get the finished string length down.  For me my recurve strings are 1 peg longer then for a longbow. I start my first loop at 9.75" from the from the tip of the longest strand.  I then twist the padded area down and it finishes at 6.5"  then twist the 2 bundles together to 7"
 Longbows start at 9.25" I do this because I don't need all the extra padded material.  Because there is no string contact on the limbs like a recurve
 I then put a clip on here so it won't come undone. Take out all the twist that built up in the two bundles and then add the back twist.  I hook the loop I have on a nail, put a tape on it and start my next loop 1" less then the finish string length I want.  
 My string stretcher is a 2x4 10'   Screwed to a shelf at chest level.  One end I have a screw in tree step with a heavy duty rachet strap on the other end a tree step with a 300lb hanging scale.  I do most of strings around 200lbs.  While under tension I burnish them with a piece of leather.  There is no reason to leave for a long time at this weight 10 minutes is plenty.  
 Take the string off let it rest for a hour and serve
