I am getting stationed at Ft Leavenworth KS next.  Lucky me after 12 years at Ft Bragg, finally somewhere with some good hunting.  But anyways anyone know of some decent public land to hunt in that area? Places to shoot? Or any other good to know info about the local area there?

I haven't hunted it (yet), but plan to this year.  From everything I have been told there is a pile of private ground enrolled in a walk in program that is open for anyone.  You should do very well!

I live about a hour south of Ft. Leavenworth.

Most of the WIHA is on the west side of the state.

There is a public hunting area in Leavenworth. I will try to find more information for you. Also, they are several lake areas within driving distance from Leavenworth that has goog public hunting. Also, we have a traditional club with a range in De Soto, so look us up when you get out here.

Any intel on the areas 12, 5 and 6?  Looks to be alot more land in 5 & 6, just want to get an idea if its worth driving up.

I have never been up there for a long time. Its not very populated up there though, so I imagine that it does not see very much pressure.  The area around Perry Lake gets hit real hard.

On map 12 I used to hunt right by areas 3 and 4. I would usually see 30-40 deer a night there. Some large bucks there too 180 +/-.  lots of does and its pretty open.

There is alot of public hunting around Valley falls. That's not too far. Let us know when you get here and a bunch of us we'll meet up and get aquianted at a shoot.. The Nocking Point is real close

Thanks James. That sounds good.  Honestly I am just looking for a place where deer will be seen with a few shot opportunities.  Although a nice buck is always welcome.
What's the terrain like out there?  In my mind I am picturing it sort of like of eastern SD, which is where I grew.

I will be there and should be somewhat settled into the new house/apartment around mid august.

My brother is PCSing to Ft Leavenworth.  He leaves Ft Richardson, AK July 16th.  You guys may run into each other.  I think he will be there for 2 years and retire with 26.  I already drew my KS buck tag to hunt with him and Parr and ArcheryX.  Your first stop should be Wild Horse Creek Bows:)

Left Ft. Leavenworth last summer--stationed there two years.  Excellent deer and turkey hunting right on post.  My favorite place to hunt was Area D--large area, mostly forest, bordered by the MO River.  A lot of big bucks come out of "D".  Limited pressure during most of the archery season.  

KS also has a walk-in hunting program (WAHP).  The state works with local land owners to allow pulic hunting on private land.

There is also some Phesant araound Valley Falls. Not a ton, but there are some. I have even seen them as far south as Oskaloosa.

Stryder has it right about the hunting on post. I think a lot of the ground is under water right now due to the Missouri river flooding.

Speak up when You get here. I live about 35 mins. south of Leavenworth. There is a Traditional only club at Desoto. Tri-County has a 2 day Trad only shoot September 3rd and 4th and a few other shoots around.

Oh my gosh man.  I spent a few years at Ft. Riley and then at school at Kansas State in Manhattan.  Had the time of my life.  There is more hunting and fishing in that area than you can do justice too.  

The Walk-In Hunting Areas will be a little bit thin over in that northeast section of the state.  There are a few.  **Check out the ones with a red border on the map.  Those are bow hunting only.**  You'll be near enough to some of the realitivly limited public land too.  Milford, Tuttle, Perry Lakes.  They will likely be crawling with hunters though.  Kansas has recently changed the regs to allow an archery permit to be used statewide rather than in only two zones.  I consider this a good thing overall, except that it means all the students and soldiers from elsewhere in the state now bowhunt near Manhattan, Lawrance, and Leavenworth rather than just when they go home for Thanksgiving and Christmas.  

What you really want to do is buddy up with some of the ranchers and/or farmers in the area and hunt the backsides of their properties in the creek bottoms, far enough off the road that the
*%&#%&# road hunters don't have them all scared up all the time.

are you talking units 12,5,6 i live in unit 5 and when you get here let me know and yes you need to go to mikes shop and look at his bows they are great i have a few of them
