Exactly, and check for any cracks or nicks, this happened to my buddy with a wooden arrow.

That sucks but I am glad it was not something worse.
Doesn't happen often, but if I ever smack something solid, I give that arrow a very thorough once over,  inspecting the nock,  integrity around the insert,   if it's a wood arrow I check for cracks, splinters, nock damage ........  it's all worth it in the end I suppose.
Nocks in particular,   they are so cheap that I will replace them on the carbons routinely.  I don't wait for issues with them.  Just replace.   Cheap insurance I suppose is the aim there.  If its a woodie and that nock gets kissed with another arrow,  even if that nock SEEMS ok,  I will sideline that woodie til I can cut the nock off and replace it with a new one.  Gives me the opportunity to inspect that nock taper as well to make sure there are no cracks.  Something close to the point,   not as bad an outcome I suppose.  Something near the nock,  BOOM!
And possibly a very bad day.

PowWow / Did anyone email me???
Last post by Terry Green - Today at 09:02:33 AM
Did anyone email in the last few days?

Strange thing happened this morning as I refreshed my email as I knew it had timed out over the last couple of day, but when I did all my NEW emails in bold just vanished.

Thanks,

:campfire:

PowWow / Check Those Arrows!

I recently picked up a heavier Howard Hill - Big Five. I took it out to the back yard bag to run a few arrows through it at close range, just to see how it felt. I nocked the first arrow, drew back and released - after that it was a blur. The bow flew out of my hand onto the grass and the arrow dropped at my feet. I was completely startled and wondered what the heck just happened. I picked up the arrow and saw that the nock was snapped off - then I inspected the bow carefully, and it appeared to be no worse for the wear. I quickly became aware that my arm/wrist was stinging like heck, and when I looked this is what I saw.  It was already welted and turning purple and red. It actually split my skin and drew blood. Not a good end to an otherwise great Father's Day.

Not sure if we are going to skip this year or not. We usually have it in June, but we have been too preoccupied with the move to the new server with the new software.  I'll make a post about if we are going to have it.

Thanks!  :knothead:

Kirk you came into this a pro carpenter, oak board bow is a phenomenal entryway into the craft.  You can find out for under 50 bucks in tools and material on most occasion if you even have the patience for tillering or even the focus needed.

First bow i ever shot was a deer rawhide backed red oak board bow and after it took some set and i was onto other things now i use it to shoot 3 inch foam tips at my friends on the proper occasion.

Good luck filling those Grand Canyon pores in that paduke and Wenge.  The las5 one I did I mixed up epoxy, and thinned it with a bit of acetone to fill those pores. They are way too deep for a lacquer based sanding sealer. Another product that works well on deep pores is polyester resin.   Good looking combo though...... Kirk

I know you self bowyers will build bows out of most anything, but why encourage the use of red oak? The stuff splinters easily and is terrible in compression.

I think  you'd be much better off using Ipe, Osage or even rock hard maple with a bamboo backing...... I think you will be disappointed in using this material.

I don't mess with board bows or self bows much myself. Too much effort for poor longevity and constantly dealing with MC levels effecting the finished product. I prefer a glass backed bow system myself.

Just thought I'd throw in my .02 cents worth here....   Kirk
