Made my first trip into the wilds of Quebec last week. Let me just say Tom P. runs an excellent camp and works very hard to give you the real deal bear hunt. The first night I was exhausted from the drive and freshening baits so I just took it easy. On Sunday, did the baits in the am and set up my tree safety belt and got ready to spend the evening on my stand. At 4 pm I drove to my spot called the "GLOVE". Got set up with my harness and my Therma-Cell........ready to wait!!

I was right near a small brook and just hearing the water and the birds, watching the reds and chipmunks was very calming..........7:30 pm, I catch some movement coming from the brook and low and behold it's a bear. Now when I first sat in this stand I remember Tom saying this spot was kissing close.....now I know why.

The bear has a belly that hangs down with long fur, and rounded shoulders......not huge but I deicide if I get the chance......
He walks to the back of the barrel and sits down......then looks right up at me. My platform is 7' off the ground and the bait is 8 steps from the base of the tree. Things are up close.....real close.

The bear comes around and very slowly takes a piece of bait and runs about 20 yards away. Then again, same action. Each time he gets a bit more brazen. The 3rd time he takes the snack right out of sight........the bow comes of the hook!

Sorry......had to mow some lawn. So, the bow comes off the hook and I just know he will be back. And here he comes, he advances to the bait and again looks right up at me, then takes a piece and turns to leave. I draw, anchor look for the front shoulder and then back some......release. Off he goes like a scalded dog with my arrow in his side.

I was as cool as could be before the shot.......now my whole body is shaking and before I could gather myself I hear a long drawn out bawl........the death moan.......he was dead in less than 15 seconds. I went and got help and in 45 minutes we had my first Trad harvest.

So it was 7-7-7, Seven feet up, seven steps from the tree and in the seventh hour. After starting in 1967 I took my first big game animal. Did it with a bow that was a tribute to my Uncle Herb who got me started and only just over a week after losing my Mother........It meant alot to me.
