Marking on a bow?

What do you use to write on a bow and then what do you use to cover it.

I tried writing over wipe on poly with a fine point sharpie, let I sit over night and the ink didn't dry and it wiped right off.

Your thoughts??

I use an extra fine paint pen called  "DecoColor", but most of the pro's use a caligraphy pen and India ink, or other paint. I have a tough time using a calligraphy pen, or fountain pen myself. Trying to keep them flowing smooth is the trick.

I'm not familiar with wipe on polyurithane. You might try putting a couple coats of Helmsman spar varnish over your existing finish with the writing between coats..... Kirk

Wipe on Urethanes could also be sold as ink removers.  Go with the India Ink and the smallest Calligraphy pen you can find.  There is a trick/art to getting the ink to flow properly but you'll be happy with it.  

Spray your Urethane over the ink, wiping will remove almost anything.

Acrylic ink works well also.

Try Rapidograph tec or prismacolor, gold and silver pens. Might try a web search to find them in your area. I get them at craft store.
I use them to write on bamboo fly rods I make. I write on the boo after I use 1200 grit wet dry sandpaper to clean up the area I want to write on. The reason I do it this way is because I have put a couple coats of oil on the boo blank. I use a touch of mineral spirits as a lube on the sand paper.

That's weird Jon.
I've done a lot of writing over minwax wipe on oil based with a sharpie. Then put another coat right over it within minutes....

Were you using water or oil based?
I've only used oil based.

Hey Jon,

You got me thinking...what was different between what you did and I've done.

Went back with a brown and a black sharpie and wrote on an arrow finished with minwax w/o oil.

They both wrote just fine ( the black stood out more ) Waited 5 mins and spread some poly on it. Both colors stayed on for the wipe. Wasn't agressive..just a nice "swooosh" with a paper towel wet with poly.

After a few mins the brown was getting faded almost bled out looking. The black was still there..but not as sharp.

I rewiped a couple times with a poly wet pad using more force than I'd ever do for finishing...and both colors wiped off.

I KNEW that the black sharpie wasn't working as well as I'm used to. Went over to my bow finishing section of work..haha...the sharpie I used last time to write on a bow was still there.

THEY MAKE DIFFERENT KINDS!!

The one that works well is Industrial with Super Permanent Ink.
The writing on the pen is red.

Did the above tests with that pen...MUCH better. No "pooling" of ink either at the stops of letters.
The ink didn't rub off until I was seriously trying to rub it off.
Only available in black.
On the pen it says "for indust., lab, and commericial use.
remains permanent under most chemical washes and extreme heat and steam. up to 500˚F"

Boy  they have lots more types of pens than I thought LOTS
I'm interested in some of those paint pens.
