I have an opprotunity to get on a 7,000 acre lease in Wood county OK. Only 4 lease holders and we are all bow hunters. Does anyone know this area? I am trying to find out if the deer and turkey are as good as the guy says it is. 145 to 190 class whitetails and lots of turkey. All free range no high fence. 1.5 miles from Kansas border.

Any info would be apreciated.

I don't have any personal experience, but I have heard many times that area of the state is some of the best for large, abundant deer, as well as lots of other game. I have some friends that live and hunt in the Fargo area, which is a little south and west of Woodward, and they have lots of big deer around there. I would say its a pretty safe bet, sorry I don't have any better info for you.

Thanks guys. I have heard it is great hunting, just wanted some first hand knowledge. I am going to meet the gus up there in a week or so and look at the property.

COMBER

I've hunted for several years in Barber county Kansas just over the state line and shot some great bucks (130-160) and I stay at the ranchers house in Alva Ok and on the way to hunt I see some huge bucks in Ok. The closer you get to the Kansas border the better and more expensive the leases get. How far from Alva is the spot you're looking at? The rancher I lease from has a couple acres in Ok and 4000 just over the line in Ks. To answer your question Woods county is as good as Ok gets. The only problem with Ok is their rifle season is during the rut (mid Nov) but if you're gonna control 7,000 acres that won't be a problem.

I live just north of Alva OK (Woods county) in Kansas.  Went to college in Alva and know a little bit about it.  Right around Alva is a lot of agriculture primarily wheat.  Northwest of there is a lot of rough country that is primarily grass ranch country.  I have seen some good deer come out of there.  The only difference between the deer in OK and the deer in KS is OK is very generous with there tags, therefore more deer get shot.  KS has the exact same deer they just have a better age structure(more mature deer).  If you have some control on that many acres it could be really good now and in the future.  Good luck.

Donald,

I will be hunting up in that part of the state too on some land owned by friends. I did not have much luck there last time I hunted on the land, but I have seen plenty of good deer that have come out of the area and know there are more than a few left.

The land is around Alva, and we will control the entire 7,000 acres. The land owner wanted a very small group. He does not want anyone bringing in a whole buch of people. The two leaseholders now have had it for a couple of years and they have both took 150 to 180 clas deer each year and missed a couple that would have been 190+ they say. I am going up when I get home next week and check it out. I am excited. It will not be cheap, but to have that many acres and all be bow hunters is awesome.
