"I love you Daddy".......My son Cade while stump shooting  3/19/06

I shot a super heavy Howatt for a fellow at a shoot, he had a 125 pound bow and one that was I think around 90, he could not begin to shoot either one. The 125 kicked so hard my hat flew off, the 90 made my ears ring and my left eye came loose in the socket. I handed him my 89 pound Kramer he drew it to about 21 inches and shot and said "man that's one smooth bow". That Kramer kicked like a mule, but shooting his was more like jumping in front of a train.

Wow pavan!!! I wouldn't say mine is that bad but there is a noticible difference between this and my other bows, that is for sure. I think it has to do with the way the limbs curve forward when unstrung. They are not flat like my other Hills.

The 125  was built by someone that went to build himself a longbow and that is just how heavy it ended up. The heavy Howatt, if I remember right, was called an Ml10.

Pavan,
I know it is wrong, but when said "...and my left eye came loose in the socket."  I fell out laughing!     That is one hell-of-a-bow right there!

Yep, mine is an ML-10 as well. Put 30 or so arrows through it this afternoon. Still have both eyes in their sockets.   :biglaugh:

Pavan your descriptiveness brought back those horrible memories of me trying my 1st longbow... an Old Ben or something like that.

My teeth hurt, my wrists hurt, my shoulders hurt, it was worse than shooting my TC 35 Remington or 45/70 except my ears weren't ringing after shooting the bow.

God bless,Mudd

PS: I'm not sure I'm going to have any hair left by the time my Sunset Hill shows up...lol

Well we have let the conversation slow and now we are on the back page so I guess I will have to stop reading and post something.  Turns out that the folks at howard hill were right all along.  They recommended a spine for my bow that I thougt was too stiff by 5# and got some too light.  So light that they almost acted stiff.  Well after some frustration I followed there suggestions and had to cut them a little shorter to stiffen them up.  I am just amazed at how stiff of an arrow my bow takes.  BTW 56@28 26" draw and it likes a 50-55 27.5 BOP 125gn.  Was shooting 45-50 27" BOP and got frustrated every other day.  Only problem is that flight was so good that I now have an arrow with a broadhead lost inside a hay bail.

WESTBROOK

Chris, from what I've seen on here the Hills run a few pounds heavier than they are marked, so that would account for some of it.

Eric

ChrisM

Well I had mine weighed and it came out to exactly 50@26 and 56@28.

Gordon Jabben

Do you guys notice that much difference in arrow flight between spine weights?  The reason I'm asking is today I shot my 60-65 spine arrows and threw in a 87# arrow in the group and couldn't tell the difference. It hit with the rest of the arrows and seemed to fly fine.  For the record, I am shooting a 60# Northern Mist Classic bow and my form is not what it should be.

ChrisM

They hit in the same general area but I demand that my arrows recover quicklly and start spining fast.  I am kinda anal about tune.

Gordon Jabben

Well Chris, you have me wondering.  Unlike you, I pay little attention to tune and just shoot the arrows I have.  Of course I group by spine but really don't know exactly what is best for a particular bow.  It will be fun in this off season to play around with different arrows a little.

dragonheart

Chris:  You are shooting 50-55#, 125 grain point,  27" arrows out of 50#@ 26" Howard Hill?  Is your draw 26", is that correct?  I also draw 26".  Just curious about what other folks shoot in the way of spine.  I believe my Hill is about 1/4" outside of center.

Speaking of arrows, I am working on a set of self nock arrows.  Here are the specs:

Surewood shafts, walnut laminate in the self nock, 1 white and 2 natural, small brass tack nail used as an index for the nock.  Up front 225 Tuffhead. Should be pig penetrators!

Overspined

Cool arrows!

Spine makes quite a difference for me.  The arrows group ok and fly like crap until I find the sweet spine/length combo. I usually spine them out with broadheads and then find field pts that shoot well too.  Broadheads have a different weight distribution I guess so the mass weight of my broadheads don't always match the field points.  I like them (woodies) to fly like lasers if possible.

Ray_G

Jeff,

I like those!  Can't wait to see them in person.  If I break all of mine ... what spine are they, again?        :archer2:
