Mudd,

That Red Dragon is a cool looking bow.  Something about that cedar and white glass is a great combo.  How is she shooting?

Thanks for sharing those - gorgeous pieces of history

Beautiful bows!!  One of the most enjoyable aspects to Hill style bows is the unique "personality" each one seems to possess.  :archer:

Thanks David. Those bows are simply works of art. Been working on the swing draw. I cant believe how well I am shooting. Its going to take some time, but this style shows real promise.

I've been packing food, bottle water, bug spray, t-shirt, dragging rope, etc. in my back pack for years. I thought everyone packed stuff in their backquiver. It seems like the natural thing to do and works well.

This year I'm going to make a leather backquiver like yours, I won't use it much in the Florida heat, but it would be cool to make a Hill quiver like that. For the Florida heat my basket quivers work best.

Nate Steen .

I'd like to apologize to the folks reading this thread and others on tg wherein i have posted.  I have realized that in my zeal for archery and shooting hillstyle longbows i have often posted replies and remarks that have conveyed the thoughts i am a hillstyle know-it-all.  That is wrong of me.  I am sorry.  In my chosen lifestyle i have tried to live with humility in all things and sometimes ego/pride raises his ugly head.  Reading over some of my past posts i realized they did not convey the message i wished them to.

I am by no means an expert on the hill style of bowmaking...shooting...or archery in general.  I am just a fella who likes building and shooting hillstyle semilongbows and as such i have studied and observed the aspects of both.  My opinions on the subjects are just that.  My sincerest apologies to all and i hope i have not influenced anyone here into thinking i am someone of importance.  Thank you.

T-shirt and bug spray  :scared:  Can you get a parka and hand warmers in there? That's what we need here, lol!

Kidding aside, my present quiver isn't big enough for carrying extras inside. I could get some stuff in there, but getting it out would be a trick, especially wearing four layers of wool at this time of year. I'm thinking with a quiver the size of Nate's I could put in the divider and get plenty of stuff inside. This is the quiver I'm talking about:

Kanati 58" 44# @ 28" Green glass on a green riser
Bear Kodiak Magnum 52" 45# @ 28"
Bodnik Slick Stick longbow 58" 40# @ 28"
Bodnik Kiowa 52" 45# @ 28"
Kanati 58" 46# @ 28" R.I.P (2007-2015)
Self-made Silk backed Hickory Board bow 67" 49# @ 28"
Bear Black Bear 60" 45# @28"

Nate I regrettably  but respectfully have to disagree with you.

You are a person of importance and it's not for the reasons you list but for two other reasons.

1) or 2) Your love of sharing with others, your knowledge of history, and watching an arrow fly true to it's intended mark.

2) or 1) You are one of His children who loves sharing his passions with others.

For these two things we admire and love to read your comments.

If we didn't think you cared, we wouldn't care how much you knew!

Happy New Year!!

No big deal Nate. We are trying to "type" our thoughts and intentions. Even with an unlimited amount of "emoticons" we will not be able to convey every intention AND emotion to everyone, always, every time, etc. etc...........

dragonheart

Nate,

I believe the zealousness is one of sharing the joy, discovery, and magic of shooting Hill style longbows.  A "helping and sharing" intent has been the message I have recieved from your posts.  I look back through at my own post and recognize that my intent is to pass on what has worked or not for me.  A given reader could interpret what is written in a different way.  This forum gives a great format, but we loose about 80% of our ability to communicate (no body language, inflection) with written word.

Many of us want to share, that tidbit, form-insight, or something that works for us in shooting.  Obviously you have been passionate about shooting a longbow for many years and your knowledge gives you a base for sharing that information with others.  I look forward to and  apperciate your input, ideas, and experience.

Tradgang and the "thread" is a contribution to all that want to join in the quest of better shooting with longbows.  Your words help many to move towards being a better longbowman.

I haven't detected any know-it-all attitude whatsoever, but I sure have learned a lot since this thread began. The fact that good archers and hunters are willing to share what they know is, well, simply priceless.

A person can learn about Hill bows and the gear that goes with them and learn how to shoot them on his own, but M-A-N is it a lot easier when we can draw from other people's experience and insights. It's also a lot more fun, and about a thousand times more interesting!

Many of us come at this from different angles, but there's a common thread that runs through us all----a love of Hill bows, straight arrows, and good shooting. Speaking of shooting, I am going to go outside right now to practice the swing draw. After three days of 15-yard practice, I am starting to enjoy it. We'll see how it goes when I take it out to 25 yards in a week or so. Until then, it's 15 yards only. At this distance, it's a good thing I only practice with one arrow. Otherwise it might get a bit rough on the nocks!

tadpole

Nate, your thoughts and sharings of the Hill way have helped me a ton.  I greatly appreciate your posts and look forward to them along with everybody elses on TG.

Mudd-

The quiver in the middle is my favorite because it's soft and lays on your back like a Hill leather quiver, this one was made in Colombia.

The quiver on the right is my second favoite, it's bigger and can carry much more, this one was made in the Bahamas. I met this Bahamian women that was selling baskets, I asked her if she could make one longer with a larger diameter with a loop on the top and bottom for a strap, she told me yes, so I ordered one. When I went to pick it up, it wasn't ready, so I told her if she comes to Florida call me and I'll pick it up. About a month went by until I got a call from her, she was in Miami with me quiver.

Nate-

I think that your a top notch guy.

The internet has brought us together, we all have some connection to Hill shooting, Hill bows, Hill books/videos, Hill collectables. I think it's great that we've found a place to hang out like tradgang to share this information amongst ourselves.

If someone is interested in Hill shooting this is where I would tell them to come for information because we actually shoot Hill bows. I remember picking up a book by a well known author that said a longbow should be held like your squeezing the sap out of it. No wonder so many guy's think Hill bows don't shoot well.

Nate...I sincerely and EMPHATICALLY disaagree with most of what you have apologized for.!!

Since the first time I read what you have posted, traded emails and PMs for months and within the numerous phone conversations of late, you have always projected a professional but humble attitude...enjoyable and friendly.

You have captured my attention and fed me with good stuff that has taking me back many years to daydreams of shooting a piece of history.

If you are guilty of anything here..it is your professional sense of humor and you willingness to take time with guys like me...time you don't have...to share your zeal.

Besides what better way to try to better your self than to cola berate with others.  Take for instance:
Which grip is better and/or correct?   O-Kayyyyy, now Why is that proving true? A lot of "know it alls" can't even see the difference?

That top grip is going to give you a sore thumb joint.
