Anybody having trouble with this!     :(  [/QB]
Tony,

I didn't shoot much over last Winter and was frustrated when I started shooting in the Spring.  I do "swing" when I draw and my shooting was OK but not stellar.  I had shots go here or there but  near to where I wanted to be.

I had to sloooow all my practice down and redevelop my cadence.  Slow and deliberate practice.  As Fall this year approached, I was hitting 2" dots at 27 yards (I don't shoot groups).  When Nate and I were antelope hunting, we shot at sage brush, picking long shots, some uphill and some downhill.  He commented on how much my shooting had improved.  A compliment from a great teacher that I was happy to receive.

Like Nate posted, take the time to shoot lots of arrows while developing your cadence.  Your tempo and accuracy will build up after your body and mind have been ingrained with the process.

Best wishes!

Thanks Ray!  Encouraging words for sure.  I'd kill for 2" dots at 27 yards.

I will go back to the blank bales and talk to myself a bit.  Actually I have no reason to hurry this thing - but, as Nate observed...I am "eager" to make it happen.

Happy New year Ray - the best to you and yours this coming year!  Hope to share a campfire with you some day.

Does Nate have a website or some pics of his bows? Those Sunset Hills have a good following.

My Big 5 arrived today!!!!  Sad part is that I wasn't home.   :(

So it's sitting in jail till Tuesday.  While I suffer over the holiday weekend, I wondered if you guys could recommend some arrows for it.  I tried using Stu's calc bit didn't know what to input for bow type.

The bow is 45 # @ 28.  I draw 26.  I have some 600 spine carbons as well as GT 35/55 arrows which I can adjust front weight with insert weight tubes.

Thanks in advance!

Happy New Year Everyone!

In keeping with the spirit of all things new, I am starting the new year with a new Hill quiver. I made my other Hill quiver about 15 years ago and have trudged all over hill and dale with it hunting rabbits, ground squirrels, badgers, rock chucks and stumps, but it has always seemed a bit too wide, causing the arrows to hang farther down on my right shoulder than I really wanted.

So. . . I made a new quiver, and designed it to be about 75 percent of my original quiver's width. It does hang better, and with rabbit season looming, it will be getting plenty of hunting use shortly.

Here is the new quiver.

Here is a photo comparing the width difference with my other quiver.

And last but not least, it just goes without saying that a home-made quiver needs a companion home-made knife to go with it. This is a Helle blade, with a black walnut handle from a tree felled outside my office, and an elk-antler accent. As those of you who also own Helle knives know, it's wicked sharp. It will make quick work of rabbit skinning in the field, and may even dig an arrow or two out of a too-hard stump.

Your stylin', Bro. Mudd!  Those arrows are even color coordinated to the bow.  I will be looking forward to your signature shots on target photos from this bow.

Rik, that's funny because I am thinking I'll do just the opposite with my next quiver. The first one I made is about the size of your new one (at the top anyway).

I've been reading Hunting the Hard Way and Hill carried all kinds of stuff IN his quiver along with all his arrows: lunch, small game taken, etc. My quiver holds plenty of arrows, but there's little room for anything else in there.

I also notice Nate's quiver is BIG! I'm thinking I want to try something like that next. I'm not sure you can have too many quivers anyway. It would be kind of like having too many bows...yeah, right!

Nice Rik!

If you would part with it, I'll call dibs on your old one just for the MoJo of it...lol

I hope we get to flings some arrows together someday.

Excellent job on the quiver Rik.  Very nice!

Mudd,

Make it to the North American Longbow Safari this summer and we will definitely fling some arrows together.

30Coupe-----You may be onto something there. What if a quiver had basically one leather tube area for arrows, and the remaining part of the quiver could be used to stuff clothes or gear in? The leather tube would separate the arrows from the gear, but it would be invisible from the outside. You could easily stuff a wool shirt, a small gear kit with fire starter etc, lunch and a water bottle there, with no interference to your ability to draw or store arrows.

30coupe

Rik,

That's kind of what I was wondering about, but rather than a tube, a divider that kind of angles across the quiver front to back. I am afraid the tube might keep the quiver from molding to my back. I don't know if I explained that all that well.

Something like this maybe

Sorry, I'm not all that good with Sketchup.    "[dntthnk]"

With something like this, you could also keep your broadheads and blunts separated even if you weren't carrying any extras in the quiver.

I guess I'm just kind of an inveterate tinkerer, so this is something that could happen eventually.

John Gilbert....here are a couple of pics of Nate's Sunset Hill bows.  I guess he won't mind if I post them--he sent them to me last year.

The years accumulate on old friendships like tree rings, during which time a kind of unspoken care and loyalty accrue between men.
