Stoneknife-

That bow looks like my first Hill, is that a Tembo or BigFive?

I have a friend, whos Name is Bob Osceola. It was his Grandfather who guided Hill on his swamp hunts. He still has bows that Hill gave to his Grandfather.Bob claims it was His Grandfather that introduced Hill to "Snakewood".Cliff and i have had dissagreement,on this subject in the past, but i hafta go with the man that has firsthand contact and knowledge of the subject.Ive tried to Get Bob to weigh in on this subject,in the past, but he preferres to spend time in the swamps, rather than on the internet.I dont think he really cares what others think,or think they know.LOL
Target archery is seeing how far away you can get and still hit the bull's eye. Bowhunting is seeing how close you can get and never miss your mark.

Two weeks and six days since I called Craig about a Wapiti, this is what greeted me when I arrived home today (sadly after business hours):

I'll head-in to the agent tomorrow and pick it up!

Craig told me three to four weeks.

Now, I might be jumping the gun here, but I don't know of anything else that would've been sent to me via FedEx recently. Stay tuned...

Although, if it is indeed the little "Wop", I won't actually have any arrows for it, as the shafts are still in transit.

The Chally Special tried to arrive this week, too, but that delivery company only comes to Katherine once a week from Darwin, and they left me a note with a number to call - they'll drop it in to school on their trip down next week!

Too many good things on the way! Oh, the suspense!

Chuck, it's a 53#, 68" D-shaped longbow with some reflex in it, made by Australia's Guardian of the True Longbow, Jeff Challacombe! It's a rare bird these days, as it is very difficult to bribe Jeff to ply his old trade. I managed to jump-on a rightie that Ben Maher had for sale. In Peter Stecher's book, this design of Jeff's is rated as the quickest D-shaped longbow around. Doctor Ashby has killed many buffalo with his, and is featured with it in the ABS ad here and in TBM.

I concur good Sir !
The "Chally" is one quick Hill bow ... quickest i have seen .

Craig Ekin must have little speed working Hobbits on loan from Santa with such quick turn around times ...

Ben-

I don't know how Craig does the 4 week turnaround on his bows. He must be constantly glueing up bows, and there ready to be tillered.

After many years of shooting different bows, being in pusuit of the holy grail. I've always came back to my Hill bows. So, about 2 years ago, I sold all my bows except 2, and I had a new Hill built.

I made a decision to only shoot my Hill bow no matter what, it wasn't the fastest bow but it was easy to tune, smooth to draw, and easy to shoot. I really like the thick limbs and the D-shape of the bow,and I enjoyed reading and watching the Hill books and videos.

I also decided that I would not buy any more bows. All I can say, is that it's been so hard to do. The classifieds has the Robin Hood Collectiable bow for sale at a great price, I would like a Hill Cheetah, and maybe a Hill with white glass, and maybe a Dave Miller bow, and a ShrewHill. This is going to be tough not to pull the trigger and buy another bow.

For my therapy, after I got off of tradgang yesterday and earlier today, I went outside and shot my Hill. It seems to be working because when I start shooting my Hill bow, I realize how nice and smooth it is and I forget about buying another bow.

It's so easy to start building a collection of bows again because there all so nice. I need to remember, "you can only shoot one at a time." I know that I'm not alone because all my friends have several bows after being in this wonderful sport for so many years.

I don't know how long I can hold out, will have to see.

To be cont...

This was a sub-3 week turnaround time TO AUSTRALIA!  That is crazy.  Craig must be working like a madman over here.

Enjoy that Wapiti, Ben.  Make sure to post some pics.  And some of that Chally Special, too.

Is it appropriate to post a link to another forum here?  There is a great link to an article about Howard on another bowhunting forum.  It has great information that should be accessible here.  Let me know and I will post it.  Thanks.

I just got a new to me Hill longbow and would like to measure the amount of backset on this bow.  Since I don't believe in a stupid question, especially when I'm asking it, I'll ask.

Where do you take the measurement from?  I figure you place the unstrung bow against a straight edge and measure the distance from the straight edge to the riser just below or above the leather grip.  Thanks.

Can you tell I'm off from work today?

Darren,
Craig has a white glass 70" Tembo 47 @28 in the stock bows.
There, you've been tempted. All you have to do is pick up the phone.

Haven't posted here in awhile.  Haven't been able to work for several months, but I'm back in the shop, with this result, which I posted to the Bowyers section, but I know lots of you guys don't build but like to see the D bows, so here you go:

Couple more good mornings work and the new bow is looking real good.  I'm quite tickled with it, even if it is too heavy for me.  It's got a nicely balanced appearance with good limb depth in the boo cores providing a nice contrast with the riser.   I'm naming it "Recovery".  It's the first one since I was able to get back into the shop steadily.   It's my Javelina forward riser pattern, 68" with olive wood outers, lamboo cores and katalox riser with a slightly dished grip. (I've really come to like that grip.) It's showing 51# on my spring scale and 52.5# on the digital. These pix are with the first coat of finish.  (I can never resist taking that pic :^) It'll get a brown leather wrap and a brown and black string.
