Thanks for the update Darren.

Nate Steen .

Greg,  yes, I have found more elk around human habitation as well.  The Stanley basin I hunt in has the highest quota of wolf tags....60,  in the state....there's a lot of wolves there. The backcountry areas are seeing the worst elk declines, and elk are moving.  The reason I brought this up, I've hunted for elk for a long time, have seen the ups, downs, and now hopefully another up.  But if I hunted them like I used to,  I wouldn't see any.  The areas I usually hunt, are reasonably close to highways, roads, habitation, yet I very rarely encounter people there....most slob hunters don't get off the road, so I'm having a 'wilderness experience' without having to travel in more than a couple of miles....

Idaho and the other mountain states aren't out of the wolf woods yet,  there's still alot of progress to be made yet....

On the Hill style topics....  John at American Leathers and I are collaborating on a replica Hill style backquiver from Howard's 1930's era....the one he wore in filming 'Robin Hood'.  American Leathers will be selling and promoting the quivers along with the usual Hill style quiver in the near future....John is good people and real customer oriented.  These products should be a great addition to his other leather goods.....

Soft leather appeals to my tenderloins. Nice snugged up fit, but still got a nice orifice for arrows.

Nate Steen .

hey Swampthing....how's the hunting/sneaking going?  had any more close calls with the longbow?

Ben Maher

Nate ... any dates as to when the new quiver will be released ? A lefty will be required !

I had a close encounter with a doe, and her yearling, the other day. I could do nothing but stand still as they circled me @ less than 30yds. That little one was quite inquisitive, but her mom knew just how to stick to cover. Brown plaid shirt, grey wool pants. Gloss finish on bow. Ha.

Swamp,
were you on the ground?

Traxx

LS64,
A little paste wax on that bow before goin out, could remedy that gloss.
Target archery is seeing how far away you can get and still hit the bull's eye. Bowhunting is seeing how close you can get and never miss your mark.

Peter, man those are beautiful. I couldn't take either of them into the woods cause I get in the thick of it and all of my bows have lots of scratches on them.

Greg, I spent a week in May on Isle Royale a few years ago. For those that don't know, it's a piece of rock in Lake Superior with nothing but moose and wolves on it year round, and permit hiking (no motors or machinery) in the summer.

All of the cows and calves were down in the campgrounds with the campers, but all the bulls were out in the brush. All of the wolf tracks I cut were all circling within a mile or so of the campgrounds. It's very interesting how the wolves drive the weak and young towards humans.

Rik

You guys are right on regarding the wolves.

Things have changed so much, so quickly. A few short years ago, I hunted the deepest back country I could find, because I specialize in hunting what I call "dumb bulls." For many years, I would be the only person to ever bugle them. They had no clue humans could bugle. The hunting was great.

The wolves have changed all that. This year, the farther I got from humans, the less elk sign I found. The closer I got to civilization the more elk sign I found.

That is a major problem for me, as the elk close to civilization have been bugled at by humans, a lot, and I would estimate that, at best, one bowhunter out of two or three thousand can bugle well enough to sound like an elk. The rest, well, they sound like a human blowing a brand new store-bought elk call that sounds way more like a duck than an elk. They quickly educate the elk. That kills the sport for guys like me.

The elk are adapting to the wolves by moving to civilized country, and becoming habituated to humans. They are in the areas where the ATV addicts zoom around bugling and bugling, never realizing that the elk hear both the ATV------AND the bugle.

To hunt these areas will just about kill my soul, but I am an elk hunter, and I will follow and hunt the elk until I can no longer walk or draw my bow.

I will miss the high country though. More than you can imagine. I still remember the magic that use to happen up there in September. In fact, if I sit quietly for a few minutes, I can almost hear what it used to sound like when the bugling of multiple bulls rang across the canyons. Man, it was great!

Ben Maher

Man that is just about the most hearbreaking thing I have read in ages .
At the least Rik , I'll hike up there for a stump shoot with you , and we can think of new swear words for wolves, the dudes who introduced them and the ATV Bugle crowd.

Rik,same thing in Northern Alberta this year ,wolves all around us.Less bugling than we've ever had.Got up one night about 4;00am to the call of nature wolves started howling about 200 yards away,Sure made the dark Black!LOL

Well, the truth is, any old bow can kill an elk. The shooting distances are generally so close that you could even hit one with a recurve.

However, it is now time to switch gears from elk to deer, and for deer, you need pinpoint accuracy------and as we all know, that's where our Hill Bows pay for themselves ten times over.

Yep, it's time to start practicing those longer shots, and to pull out the good binoculars and start searching for the big bucks on those distant ridges. I can feel the excitement building already. . .

GOT IT TODAY!!  Thanks to Bob Burton of Whispering Wind Arrows!!      Archers Campfire Board, Howard Hill Collectibles

Nate Steen .

Ben,

about 1 month or so on the quivers to begin production....  but I'll probably post some pics earlier than that.  I don't know when John will put them on the website....but he said soon....

Rik,  I know you are heartbroken, but I'm glad to see you can change gears quickly and adapt....

Swampthing....the glossy bow isn't a problem 'eh?  I love it.  I wax mine to a polish all the time...I love a pretty bow.
