Red Tailed Hawk

My Tembo makes meat for the first time!!!

We had a pretty severe storm heading our way on saturday and I was able to get out bright and early before it hit.

I was set up in a blown down tree "Nature made ground Blind". I was able to drop the string on him at 12 yards for a quartering away shot and the Zwickey Delta did it's job well!!!

Nice to have meat going back in the freezer.
The buck looks pretty saturated wet because I had to drag him out when the storm hit.
I am so happy with my first Hill Bow kill!!!

I am not quite sure why these pics came out so big, photobucket says they are sized to spec.

That is a nice bow Molson and I'm sure your young fella will really like it. I like that green glass; wish we could get some down here.

looper that Cheetah looks great out in the woods.

Congrats on your buck Red Tailed Hawk!!!

On the subject of speed compared to the number of lams; myself and a mate did a lot of testing of this back in the early 1990's. We both made Hill style longbows so it was a real interest to us.

Our results very clearly showed that three lam bows were faster than the four or five lam bows (I was using five lams in my bows at the time ). As a result of these tests I started using four lams for my bows and still do and my mate started using three lams in his hunting bows.

I use four lams because I like to place the belly lam on the belly side of the riser so I want it thin and the four lams allows me to do this better than three lams does. I also liked the feel of the draw with the four lams over the three lams. The speed difference was only 1fps or there abouts less so that didn't worry me.

Anyway that was our findings and I thought it might interest some.

Wow, Craig sure must be putting in the hours.

Congratulations to all ya'll with new bows and hunting successes!

Since our first deer season closed in this area, I have been busy at work or on the house.  I have been getting a bit buggy with no hunting, so I tell my bride I am going out with the bow.  There are small game seasons open.

Nate and I hunt this area for cottontails when the snow finally comes.  There are Hungarian Partridge in here as well and I was ready for some wing shooting or at least an attempt.

Another photo of some of the cover.  If there were rabbits in here today, I didn't see any of them because of the tall grass and it's color.  I did disrupt a mule deer doe from her bed in this  sage brush.  I don't have a deer tag for this area so I got to watch her stott away.  I did shoot a bunch of sage brush - our equivalent of stumping.    ;)

As I trekked on, I headed over to the Snake River canyon rim.  It is a refreshing thing of beauty to sit up high and watch the natural world.  My soul was refreshed, I drank it all in.  A photo of Vineyard Lake and my Sunset Hill.

There is still a lot of water running in the creeks, seeps and the Snake.  Usually by this time of year, water is limited.  In the previous photo of Vineyard Lake, you can see it's outlet on the right of the photo.  Here is the outlet and the run off into the Snake River.

No bow kills on game but I did have a great hike and practice in the field for the next deer season.  I will be back in here for cottontails later, as well.  My soul is renewed.

RedTailed Hawk.....

nicely done, plaid, backquiver, longbow....just like the old times....  you should give us the whole story.  we're starved for Hillstyle hunting stories right now.

Ray,  glad you got out buddy....jumped a doe huh?

W/R to the 3 lam Tembo:

I have this urge to build a Hill, and I've been looking at tapers and stacks to hit my target.  In the process, I've measured both of mine.  The Tembo has a 0.006 taper, the Owl has 0.008.

When I compare the tillers, the Tembo's is more pleasing with the entire limb seeming to work better.  The Owl has a lot more of the action happening at the ends.  Both are 68", the Tembo is 50# and the Owl 60#.

I have a Tembo I finished from a blank.  It also has carbon under the black glass backing and is a very snappy shooter - 56# @27", 66" in length. I also have a 68" Cheetah that I got from Mudd and a 66" Redman with carbon and black glass that I also finished from a blank.  I'm not sure the Tembo is a typical Tembo, though, because I did alot of sanding to get it to the weight I wanted and that narrowed the tips more than the ones Craig finishes.

All three bows are excellent shooters, but the Tembo is definitely faster than the other 2.  If I had to choose just one it would probably be the Tembo - tough choice, though.  The Redman is the smoothest and quietest.
And in the end of our exploring we shall return to the place where we started and know that place for the first time.

Been wondering about the "tembo".  I have a wesley special made through Bob Wesley and a Redman.  I love the redman.  Wonder if the tembo is a sweeter shooting bow, may have to find out.  The one Nate made me is really sweet.

That Cheetah looks right at home in your woods looper.  Glad it went to a good place.  Best of luck with it.  That goes for all of you who have new or old bows that you are hunting or shooting with.  I'm having a blast with mine.  Still tinkering with arrows though.

I have exciting news.  I just scored a copy of "Hitting 'em Like Howard Hill; Hill's Basics of Shooting and Hunting".  Yes the book.  Nobody seems to have them anymore, so the used market is the way to go apparently.  I have seen them used up to $98.  Ridiculous for a 45 page booklet.  Mine cost me $22.75 to my door and it's reported in very good condition.  Nice one to add to the collection.

Just got in from a 45minute standoff with a doe at 20yds. After every muscle in my standing upright body was about to cramp, she decided to walk broadside to me @15yds, as I just began to bring the bow up she busted loose, amazingly she stopped at about 40yds and gave me a second look!!   As I swung up my brothers 48# Big 5 and released I watched her watch an arrow come at her, about 2 feet over her back!! Shot at the whole animal!  Up to then I was doing pretty good. Great day, great day. If I had my 65#er in hand I would have been lugging that girl out, shoots about 2 feet flatter at that range.   Head to toe wool, shiny bow. 1 arrow only.
