RLA, yes I like the B_50 on my Miller as well. Tried FF but just did not like the feel. I got a idea for a bow from David just need to save my pennies again.

I will be using my Bama Bow straight limbed longbow for hunting this year.  I have enjoyed using a back quiver for stump shooting through the summer, but last night I started to lay out all the "junk" I carry when hunting and can't see being able to carry everything and a back quiver too.

I don't carry much, but I do like to carry things like binoculars, water bottle, seat, game retrieval items, survival kit, map and compass...wait maybe I do carry too much! LOL

Anyway, for all you guys that use back quivers while hunting, what is your solution for carrying your gear and still make effective use of the back quiver??

Nate(Sunset Hill) will show us how it's done I'm sure.

I am positive he doesn't go afield without all his gear which includes his back quiver.

It would be great to hear from Nate, and some of our brethren in OZ who seem to favor the back quiver.

I have a feeling that Howard Hill and others of his generation probably went afield with a bow, quiver, and a pocket knife and felt equipped to deal with any eventuality.

Fanny pack or a haversack.  I have used both.  This year going with a fanny pack.  My haversack is "the grey bag" a grey canvas gas mask bag that was handed down to me by my dad.  It was the first backpacking equipment that he bought and I have hunted with it alot.  I will post some photos later. There is a picture of sunset hill on this marathon thread of him with his BQ and a haversack.

I use a fannypack, and attach my backquiver to my climber while I'm walking through the woods.

i almost never use a back quiver.  either a safari tuff duiker bristling with 8 to 12 arrows, or an efa 5 arrow bow quiver.  always carry a fanny pack chock loaded with everything from the usual necessities to survival stuff.

I like the Cabela's Pine Ridge fanny pack....it sits low enough to use the backquiver exclusively, has a bottle holder (which I use for gps & spottracker) and plenty of room to hold....2 knives, rope, flagging material, flashlight/batteries, first aid, firestarter, pistol, food, camera/small tripod.......so what else would I need to carry?  not much.  And this is what I use for elk hunting.  For deer and bear I use a haversack.....

Looper

I hunted all of last year using an old army musette bag attached to my Waldrop Pac Seat. Pretty slick. I ended up using a bow quiver. I really prefer a bare bow, but the bow quiver worked out better than my side quiver.

Thanks for the replies.  You have all given me some ideas. Thanks!

exactly the make and model i've been using for the last 5 or 6 years.  holds lotsa good stuff, and the water bottle holder is a handy touch.  the only other MUST HAVE thing hanging off the pack belt is a my MUST HAVE thermocell.

Rob,  great pack...holds enough, not too much to drag your pants down...  :biglaugh:

if I lived out there, the thermacell would go along too.....I might still buy one for bear season...this year the skeeters were fearsome.

now if I was Rik,  that guy carries more in camera gear than I do hunting gear...he needs man sized packs...so doesn't use a backquiver but I guess this year his going barebow and using a Safarituff

THERMOCELL IS MANDATORY IN MY NECK OF THE WOODS OR THE SKEETERS WILL OWN YOU!!!!!
Longbows & Short Shots

Thermacell won't do it for our skeeters, you guys haven't seen skeeters till you have been in a wet Iowas river bottom before the first freeze. Even Minnesota has got nothing on us.  We have the little tiny head standers that don't hover, they dive bomb. I take what I need to start a smudge fire, a corn cob pipe with English pipe tobacco and some muskol for where the smoke won't reach. It all fits in my back quiver and the built in back game pouches of my wool jackets.  the only dangly I carry is a nifti seat or a Huntmore chair.

ChrisM

tried my back quiver and my safari tuff today and both work well with a fanny back.  Even put on a bow quiver just to be sure and it was so as loud as my recurve with the arrows slapping each other, and the balance was all off. Funny I still shoot my recurve with a quiver on once a week and don't mind the balance but on the Hill it was hard to keep from torquing.

I still use a back quiver a fair bit ... but I am a habitual stumper / rover and my hunts involve more stumps and less fur the older I get . I very occasionally use a bow quiver and have , of late , become quite addicted to my Safarituff Arrowmaster . I hunt with a survival kit regardless of where I am and have a few backpack/bivvy hunts planned for later this year ... I'll probably use my Side Stalker Chief or Arrowmaster .
But at heart ... I'm a back quiver fella !
My Bison Houndsman haversack is about as handy as you can get for day to day poking arounf ..bow in hand .

Black glass on the back - Three lams of red cedar - Riser, about a half inch of bubinga running the fades, with a myrtle cap. Faced with white glass. White glass limb tip inserts. 1/2" backset.

The bowmaker is Dave Johnson. He's been making American stle longbows for about 30 years.... and I've been wanting one of em, for about that long.

Okie man

How long of a wait on one of Dave's bows? Will you post some pix when you get it.  I love white glass on the belly of a Hill style bow.

First group today.  Took about 5 minutes to shoot 6 arrows.  I always shoot better when I give myself time to clear my head between each shot.  Most of my groups look like this so I figure I'm ready for the woods.  I started using my hill around may.  BTW three arrows are field points and three are broadheads.
