Youth bow weight?

My son is 9, he is a excellent shot for his age, shoots 200+ on a official NFAA 300 round, shoots at the men's stake at 3D shoots and doesn't take last. I wod say 80% of the time he can keep it on a paper plate 15 yards and in...

Right now he is shooting a old Ben Pearson Cougar 35@28 / 23# at his draw.

When you you guys let him try hunting? He had shot a few rabbits...

How easily does he shoot this bow? He will naturally step up in draw weight as he grows and increases his draw length. As well as he is currently progressing, I wouldn't make any changes yet; rather, let nature handle part of the problem for you. As for hunting, does your state have a required minimal poundage? I have always accepted 40# as a minimum, simply due to previous legal restrictions, but a number of members have stated consistently good hunting results at less than that.

My wife shoots a 25# bow and I would not feel comfortable with anyone shooting a deer with it.  Not enough bow in my opinion.  Rabbits, frogs ,etc would be fine.  I would wait a few more years until he grows some more.

My 9yr old little brother is in the same place your sons in. Shoots better than someof us and shoots from our stake also. He wants to hunt deer but his poundage is to low for it. Dad is buying him a 35 @28 bow  for Christmas because his youth bow he is about grown out of.

Been thinking of letting him shoot a coyote with it to see how it does on a little bigger game then a rabbit.

I wouldn't go less than 40# on big game. That's at his draw length too....

When Cade was 12 he killed 2 deer shooting 37@22".

One arrow out the other side after going thru both lungs. Second deer was tight to the shoulder angling slightly forward and lodged into opposite shoulder.

I made my son wait until he was 15 and could pull a 45# bow (old style compound), pass a proficiency test on a military base, and climb on his own. But things were different back then.

My best advice is let him hunt deer when he's 12.

I will just keep the original plan of waiting until he can pull about 35#s
