Powder post beetle

Have a friend that pulled some Hickory staves out that are 15 years old.  They appear to have powder post beetle damage.  Are the staves ruined?

I'm comfortable working with bug hole damage. But I don't think I'd want to mess with that one. Too tightly concentrated for my taste.

I thought trash as soon as I saw hickory  in Missouri. Post beetles or not. Smoke some meat!
