A buddy of mine came down tonight, he opted to hunt one of my stands, I hunted a natural ground blind. We had been on stand for 1/2 hour wind changed blowing down hill, and had 2 deer blow once each in the hollow below me. Then heard them coming up the ridge half hour later, nearly 8 oclock. I was hunting clumps of pines between  2 small hay fields. I figured they had winded me and so I eased out o my blind and up to the end of the fencerow, in the upper field, standing against a pine. Been there 5 minutes and here comes a 70# spike followed by 2 does bigger than him, just trotting down the fence line. He stops 8 feet from me and turns inside out and takes the girls with him, they were the ones I was after. I watch for a few minutes, shift my position so I can look on each side of the fencerow, and here comes a 8 point with a 12 inch spread, still in velvet walking up within 18yds of me, I might as well been invisible. I drew back, but he was a small bodied buck, not much hamburger there and we only get one buck tag, so I let down and he saw me, took off across the other field, and ran up in front of my buddy, who let him walk tool. He also had a fork horn in front of him at 15 yds and passed. Great first hunt, cant imagine how much better the season is gonna be!

I use to hunt on my younger brothers place in Lebanon Junction, Ky which is next to Fort Knox. There are some nice deer hanging around those soybean and corn fields in that area. I once saw three bucks with 12 points or more standing around in one of those fields. All three were large bodied deer. Thanks for the story Koger, it brought back some good memories there.

Good deal Sam,glad your seeing deer.
I get to hunt in the morning for the first time this season,I feel real sorry for the first antlerless deer that gets sideways inside 20 yards..

Good Luck to ya..

Memorable start for 2014 Sam.

I hunted opening AM. It was a very comfortable 59 degrees 1 hour before shooting time when I settled in my favorite stand.   At 8am two adult does hurried through my 15-yard left lane followed by a 6-8 point velvet antlered buck. None had tails up.

I would have liked to have shot one of the Does. They went through my window and then behind some cover. I thought they would jump from the open into the woods on my right. If so, they would calm and I might get a shot. But then they reversed their course and came right back through the lane and gone.

This is a picture of the 15-yard shooting lane the deer ran through and then back.

This is the wooded area they would have entered had they jumped the fence. Note where the Helix is pointed.. this group of 3 tree boles is exactly where 3 of my last 5 recurve deer have been standing when I shot them -- 8 yards.

It was like the buck was harassing them. If something had spooked them by me it couldn't have been close because they wouldn't have retraced their route. Except for the date and velvet the behavior reminded me of early November.

I won't get to hunt again until around Sept. 22nd.
