My friends and I got back from a week of moose hunting in northwest Ontario on Saturday. The weather was great for camping but not so great for hunting moose. We saw a young bull and a nice big bull on the logging road in to camp, and on our first hunt, my buddy saw another good bull. He wasn't able to get close enough for a shot, but he wasn't worried. He also found a big, fresh rut pit in the area.
The same day, I was sitting in a small clearing not far from my hunting partner where a moose might circle around my partner to get downwind of him. Behind me was too brushy to shoot through, so I wasn't paying much attention to that area. Not very smart on my part. A moose walked in behind me and I only realized my mistake when it either got my scent or saw me and trotted off.
Can those big boys move quietly when they want!
Anyway, with the weather being really warm all week, that was all the moose action we had.
The numbers of ruffed and spruce grouse kind of made up for it though. We had plenty of bird action all week, and we enjoyed a good fry up that included some walleyes from a nearby lake.
Here are a few pictures.
During practice, I put an arrow through the tab on a beer can at 20 yards. I didn't do so well on birds. Out of 18 shots, I bagged 2. Not that I missed badly, I removed feathers from several of them and tickled others with the fletching.

It was. Time to relax and think with only a few friends around.
