Just an update ive had good success with this product only draw back is the sun doesnt shine very often in the winter months and its to cold to cure outside so had to order some UV cure lights and its working well , 3 quick coats, light sanding in between and ready to finish in about an hour.
I see you can buy it by gallons. Is it sprayable. Can it be used under a solvent finish like Krystal?

Have you tested this by letting it cure overnight in 80-90 degree temps? Some of these sealers will shrink. I've never seen this one before. Do you have a MSDS sheet on it ot tech data on exactly what this stuff is?
Never mind Bryan, i found the data sheet..... This is polyester resin and has excellent solids for filler.
Is this the same product you purchased? I couldn't find one that said "Grain sealer filler".
Brandon Stahl use to swear by polyester grain filler for a base for gloss finishes.

Solorez does have a few different products this is labeled as grain filler its is actually very thin and the idea is to only fill the crevices and leave very little on the surface , put it under the light or better yet in the sun and ready to sand in a few minutes i use alot of wenge and its been working well I apply it with my finger and wipe the contours of the riser with a strip of stretch wrap, (idea i got from Rob Nicoll its quite brilliant 😊 and then spray my auto clear finish.

So where do i buy some like yours? i can't seem to find it on their website... gotta link?
Wenge is tough to fill just using a lacquer base filler. i've used an epoxy / acetone slurry before, but it's a mess and needs to dry over night.

I buy it from a specialty finishing shop here hes also the Mirka dealer so i buy all my sand paper ect from him you should be able to find it ... it is made in the usa, i buy the smallest bottle a little goes a long ways i will fill a complete riser one coat with 2 finger dabs of finish .. i used a small flexible auto body plastic bondo spreader and that worked really good flexes around the contours of your riser leaving very little on the surface and fills the grain..... i did a wenge riser tonight 3 coats sanding in between with UV light to cure i was ready for finish spray in about an hour, sands real easy just like laquer.

Stic iam not really familiar with Krystal but i think once its cured and sanded i think you could top coat with most bow finishes. They do recommend applying the least amount of product only filling the grain so I don't think you'd wanna spray it.
For $53.00 a pint, i think i'll pass. :o :o .. Glad it's working well for you. Too rich for my blood.

Thanks... I can live with that price. I ordered a bottle.
These UV fillers and finishes are amazing. I can have a bow from sanded and ready for a finish to shooting arrows with a fully cured 2 lays of finish in under 30 minutes. This is one I did for my son a few nights ago.

Krystal is a conversion Varnish. Very user friendly stuff, but doesn't hold up to heavy use in hunting conditions and rain as well as an epoxy finish or auto clear coating does. It was real popular years ago. I sprayed a bunch of bows with it myself, including my own hunting bow at the time. I ended up refinishing my bow in 2 years time, and decided to try the Thunderbird epoxy finish...
That Thunderbird is tough as hell, but very expensive. it wasn't as user friendly as Krystal by a long shot though. Defiantly a learning curve on that stuff. You had to be very careful sanding between coats. If you hit bare wood in spots you could see the overlap, and had to sand the whole riser again. The other down side to it was it yellowing over time. Don't get me wrong... Thunderbird is an excellent bow finish... I went through about 10 gallons of it before i started experimenting with auto clear coating.
The Auto clear coating rabbit hole can be very expensive, and there are many types. I did find a urethane i liked, but it was too damn expensive. More so than Thunderbird. Then i had a professional auto painter recommend the "Euro Clear" stuff i've been using for many years now. VERY user friendly, holds up well, stays clear, and half the price of the other stuff i was using. Unfortunately ... like everything else, the price has gone up over the years.
There is my .02 cents on clear coating. Kirk

Details on the filler and finish you used?

You posted while i was typing my last post.... So what type of UV finish are you using? Same brand? I'll be curious on what you think of durability. it looks good in the photo.
I have been using Vesting LED oil with a light n done UV light . Clean Armor has some Grain filling products I want to try but will need to go out for another loan from my wife before I jump into also trying the clean armor products.
That solarez got like liquid gold in it  I agree Krystal may not be as durable as Tbird or that automotive stuff but it's way cheaper. Been using it for years. Not too many complaints either, I am thinking of getting some gloss for base coats then using dull over that.

Yes, if you try and order it from the big online shopping site they sometimes ask a ridiculous price, I think the small bottle cost me about $30 Canadian. I have done at least 10 risers with it and only used half, again when you go to apply it you use as little as possible and you only fill the grain you try and wipe the rest clean. I've been using that small plastic squeegee. It's working well once dried it sands just like laquer.

The finish iam using is Five Star Auto clear gloss and matte to finish.

With any type finish you use, you'll find that the high gloss material has more solids and give you a better build up. Also... you need not use a dulling agent, or buy satin finish to get a low gloss result. Higher air pressure, with lower flow rate can produce a very nice Matte finish.
The secret is in adjusting your reducer and spray distance as well as the pressure.
This can be done with high gloss Krystal too.

So i got my sealer in, but living in Oregon, sometimes sunshine is hard to come by this time of year. Lots of cloudy days and rain.
What type of lights did you buy for curing this indoors Bryan? I want to try this stuff on a fancy walnut bow i have going right now. The walnut is not as bad as Wenge by a long shot, but it still requires some grain filler.
Heres what i got 1-300w you have to make sure its the right strength of light i believe it says on the bottle, i bought a smaller one and it wouldnt cure it , this one works ok....

This one i just finished spraying after filling with solerez , Wenge & Shedua
Kirk this was done with low pressure low volume standing way back.

Sorry about that. Seems the picture didn't come through. Let's try this again.
I looked it up again and the uv light must put out 385NM 🤷 to cure properly , there's definitely better lights out there than the cheap thing I bought, but wanted to experiment and try it a bit cause the sun doesn't shine here much either in the winter. 🏹

That's a good looking matte finish Stic. nothing wrong with that.
That filled that Wenge beautifly.
So you don't like that Amazon 300W light ? I wonder if halogen light will cure this stuff? i have a strip light i set up in my spray booth that kicks out some serious heat, and is super bright that i use when spraying.
I hate to by a special light just to cure a sanding sealer.

A halogen light I believe will definitely not cure this product. It needs a UV light that puts out a spectrum of 385NM it doesn't cure by heat it cures by UV's this 300 W UV light I got online is just fine. I found you needed to have it quite close to the riser and because of length of risers I would have to move it around a bit, but I would fill half the riser at a time because it only took a few minutes to dry under the light.
Well the stuff works great in natural sonlight. check this out... This is just the sealer.

Looks okay
Looks good ! Sands real easy too .
I found a pair of these that put out 395-400 nm. if i mounted them side by side, it will cover most std riser lengths. the 21" risers i'd have to shift a bit.

Solarez makes the UV cured epoxy I use on some of my different fly fishing patterns, they make good stuff.
Had no idea they made this product, thanks for sharing.
