Well i got it reduced to a blank so far. got lucky even tiller. :clapper: will glue front overlays today and belly ones tomorrow.
-
Looks good! what length? Here is a few shots of a recent bow I have done Using local Australian woods [ You are not allowed to view attachments ] [ You are not allowed to view attachments ] . Riser is Rose She oak, and " yellow wood' and belly veneers are she oak also. It is 68'' ntn, flat laid longbow and is 50# @ 28'' with pistol grip in riser.
-
Damn double post on first shot!
-
It may be double but that is ok, it calls for a second look. That is a really nice color combination.
-
Riser looks good, nice colors.
-
Looks great Bob..
-
Very nice Bob!
-
Beautiful, as usual. 😃
-
Nice one Bob! I like the Sheoak, forgot that it's native to you folks. Shredd scored some nice Sheoak, somewhere here in the states.
Hope your not in danger down there. I feel for you folks. I know the feeling of dread that comes with fire season.
-
Thanks guys. Yeah Flem, most of the country is burning. Thousands of homes ,dozens of people gone. And we are just starting our summer. Whole country is dry as tinder box. Ok where I live , closest was about 20 mile away. It' s out now. worst thing is in some places , morons are actually lighting these fires.

Mike and I built a new laminating box that we can use for a multitude of different things from kiln drying, to curing smooth-on builds. 5x200watt bulbs underneath on individual switches to give us a little better control of the heat. I found an "inkbird itc1000" thermostat control to adjust the temps. Still have to wire that in and the fan to circulate the air, but so far it's working pretty well. Got up to 220f and held pretty good. This is a new design for me. So we'll see how it works when we're done. We Should have it finished tomorrow.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200105/9f0c13e416ade6ae07455a0f1ce09892.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200105/210b685c8a104b9cd94e5530af8c0cf1.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200105/5baddc514a910f97f50f78ae71463077.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200105/9ef8f92ff6a8a4a2497af1465c2bb7b9.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200105/2122de5d99e0e61580feabf80c8a80d8.jpg)

Good call on the muffin fan. I put one in my box some time ago and it was one of the best oven improvements, besides ditching the light bulbs for a baseboard heating element.
-
Having a small fan not only helps with wood drying but it also helps prevents hot spots by keeping the heat more evenly distributed.
Good idea keeping all the needed equipment together in one unit. Adding rollers to the bottom will make it easy to move it to out of the way when not needed.
-
Looks good! I've been thinking of making one that has a workbench top.
-
We went a bit tall for it to have been a good bench top after the casters, but with the foam insulation, even after an hour at full blast, the outside is still cool to the touch, so I'm sure it would work out well for a bench top.

I just figured out that my newly configured hot box storage is handy for cooking also.
My control box cord is long enough, I can jack it back up to the ceiling
Damn thing takes up a lot of floor space in a small shop.

Flem, I added casters to one end of my box(similar to yours) and when not in use I stand it on end and roll it into a corner out of the way. If I leave it horizontal it seems to collect all sorts of things on top. :dunno:
-
We had joked about making jerky in mass in it. Imagine how wonderful the bows would smell. Mmm teriyaki and dell sauce.

You are a brave man Stic.
Nice hot box. Is it okay to have such a fan inside the box, gets pretty hot in there?

Scored a nice one man lean to ladder stand for $35. It’s 14’ tall. Who all hunts out of ladder stands, and do you have any issues getting picked off by deer? I’ve already got it set up in the yard and shooting out of it. Best $35 I’ve spent!

Stick I'm having a hard time figuring out the place you cut that bow in half like that ? , could you explain more.
-
It looks like the cut was made right under the shelf but maybe its not what it looks like in the picture.
-
I started working on a take down handle. I want to work on my limbs design and figured it would be faster to do a pair of limb for each design modification instead of a whole new bow each time.
It’s 17” long. Next step is to shape the templates.
-
Here ya go monterey.
-
Brian you want to relieve material about 3/8s under where your shelf will be. And shape the grip to where its comfortable then 1/8th smaller. so you need off center G10 for strength ibeam. Then cut into at an angle below the finger grooves. On U tube Big Jim has the videos. watch them if you want to do one.

That's nifty. I don't climb up trees anymore but that could be an option in some areas that require tree stands.

If you are Archery hunting you need to be up higher unless you have a very heavy background behind you.
I hunted at 25' up.

For supper last night at the deer camp.
Entree: mater gravy with onions
Sides: CWD (Chicken fried) deer Steaks, Biscuits, mashed taters, black-eyed peas.

I try to get a CWD deer every year but they always test out negative. Any tips? :)
Last time I fell out of a treestand it was eight feet and that seemed high enough.
Working on a place in the basement to do bow lay ups so I can do more building during cold weather.

Got it off the jig. But will let it cure one more day (cold weather). (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200108/1b83f18847bcd7d87b5031916f926b0f.jpg)

Very nice, Mike.
-
Excellent Mike!!
I supposedly worked my last day for the 2019 construction season. Now have a few days off and I'm ready!!
-
I wish it was excellent Kenny. I now have a two piece handle. I am guessing my wrapping jig got warped. I layed the bow on the table to work on the sight windowand it was springy laying on its side. WTH So I put the tiller blocks and string on it. Both limbs leaned the same direction
. way too bad even for a dynamic adjustment :banghead: So I saved the riser part for a pattern. Will be making a new jig soon
-
I feel sorry for you. It was looking good.
How thick was your jig? It looks pretty decent on the picture
-
Dang Mike that sucks.
-
Bummer
-
Yeah I make my fair share of screw ups :dunno:
-
Well dang!! Hate that Mike!!
-
Guess I’m kinda confused Mike.
Couldn’t you just strip the wrap off and try again??
-
Yeah I run it thru the drum sander. It is way too big and bulky and needs and upgrade. Just some plywood.

Well got some bad news guys. Last weekend I felt something strange in my shoulder after I took a shower and pretty much undid 6 weeks of PT. Seeing the ortho surgeon for a follow up and next steps. My PT therapist cancelled my session for today. Still not sure what I wrecked but pretty much in pain 24/7. Moved from mechanic to front desk due to inability to due my job. Haven’t shot a bow in 12 weeks. Looks like 2020 may not be my year. But that sums it up as to why I kind of went radio silent for the last few months.

That sucks Cody. Did you have to continue wrenching while doing PT?
-
No Flem I switched to the desk before that. Done wrenching indefinitely at this point. We need to hire someone for my spot to keep up with work load. I’m not as bad as day one of injury but not getting any better. Anti inflammatory prescription they gave doesn’t touch the pain and the cortisone shoot did nothing either. Thanks for asking.

Well got some bad news guys.....
Dang, that sucks! Hope you can get it sorted!!
Finally managed to get home after 8 days or so away. We left last week due to extreme fire weather and have been between a friends house and parents house as weather and danger threatened. We returned one day only to get another emergency warning so packed the car (1/2hr after unpacking) and buggered off again. I would have headed bush yesterday for a few hours, but figured it wasn't very responsible being somewhere out of contact and if a fire started I would have been in serious trouble so went fishing instead. Plus, I cached my hunting bow at work in case the worst happened at home.
It was thicker than this at one stage, and those trees down the back fence are 70m/200' away :o

Thereis a guy on FB putting all kinds of stuff in resin and selling it for risers. Even seen one had a wrench cast in it.

Hey Stic I know a Bowyer who's done that. Puts all kind of things in resin. I think it's the same outfit, Mike from Sauk Trail Archery, check them out.
-
Yeah it is not that hard to do. Need a pressure pot and compressor. The big cost is the resin. And I think they charge by the oz. of weight gain of the wood.
-
This past weekend I layed down all templates I will need for the take down handle.
Made a couple strings. While doing this, I was trying to find a way to easily cut the added material for the loops. And ended up just adding an extra nail on the right end. Pretty easy, I should have thought about this before :knothead:
-
OK you guys are going to think I'm goofy(if you did not already), but I have a Woodpecker and Flicker problem. They are turning my siding into splinters! So I came up with this solution, I don't want to kill them, just scare the crap out of them. But in the process I discovered an excellent training tool. The motions involved are almost exactly like shooting a long or self bow. I'm thinking I will be out plinking to keep my shoulders in shape. Would be an excellent rehab or PT exercise with weaker bands.

I've had one hanging on the wall for a couple months now. Really need get it set up.
At least once a day I pick up a recurve form template that I made months ago. Pick it up, look at it, touch it here and there with a sanding block and try to convince myself it's good to go.
-
I vote install it. Took about 20 minutes to move the guides, find the tension setting, and reset the guides.
As for that form, toss something on there and see how it comes out! I swear the longer I run my hand across the form the more invisible bumps appear...
-
Done some more sanding on the bow and just finished wiping EA-40 and acetone mix on the handle. First time I try this technique. Will see how it comes out.
-
That’s gonna be killer!!!
-
Nice handle, is that mix hard to sand?
-
I tried mixing ea40 and acetone once and just couldn't get it to come together not sure what I did wrong
-
Well this morning it was still tacky. Like a lot.
So now I am wondering if it was a good idea ???
Will see tonight
-
I just did one too, it was tacky next morning but ea 40 takes 24 hours to set and my shop was 58 degrees ...it dried by the next day and steel wool seemed to work well on it.
Mike, it doesn’t mix very well and I may go 2/3 acetone next time so it’s thinner.
-
Thanks Kenny
I should know tonight then.
Do you usually wipe it on or spray it ?
-
I put it on with a foam brush this time, didn't work too bad. Wiping might be better tho as I left a couple thick spots...
-
there is 20 min. finishing epoxy and the 3 hour is what I have mixed 50/50 acetone dries quicker. But it seems to sand hard. But fills well.
-
The hobby shops sell some kind of finishing epoxy. two component. Not sure how thick/thin it is though.
-
It’s still a bit tacky tonight but it did dry up during the day. Should be good for sanding by tomorrow
-

What are you adding to that resin to make it black?
-
That black is a couple of drops of left over Aluminite dye used for stabilizing. Jim sells some powder he uses to dye his resin. I have used leather dye even a couple of drops of Rit will work.It dont take much.
-
I think I’ll order some of that from Jim when I start making takedowns. Do you also add the carbon like he does in his video or do you only use fiberglass?
-
I think you would be fine without carbon. But I use it. I do two wraps of glass then the carbon. Then when you are shaping and get down to seeing carbon you know where to stop. And its gonna be stronger to.
-
I guess I’ll order some carbon from Jim as well then. Probably don’t need it but I like overbuilding stuff.
-

Have you had issues with structural integrity of the resin using non-resin specific dyes? I tried casting resin lures with pigments and ran into issues using other dyes.
Roughed out an osage stave that I've had sitting around for a while. It's well aged even before I got it so it's completely moisture stable, though it does have quite a few cracks in the back at the moment. Whether I can get below/around them and still have enough wood to work with only time (and skill or lack thereof) will tell. I'll have to steam it to get the tips into something like alignment so I may have go at doing a full recurve at the same time. A possibly interesting side note is that our borers here don't seem to attack the heartwood, though they will make mince meat of the sapwood.
Also managed to sneak a couple of lengths of some local bloodwood (accacia species) for a try as a selfbow from some roadside vegetation clearing. I've heard goodish things of it, so hopefully something will come out. Has much lighter sapwood and dark heartwoos much like osage. One should be good for a couple of staves, but the other will probably be only good for a sapling type bow.
Finally got my A into G and cleared up my workbench. I had to stop only because I was worried about the garbage truck not being able to lift the bin
Steve
-
Steve the Aluminite dye is used for casting and stabilizing. It takes such a small amount to. I have had no troubles so far.
-
You can mix a variety of pigments into epoxy without issue. But you have to be careful of the amount added and the carrier the pigment is dispersed in. It's recommended to not exceed 3% of the total resin weight. I have used UTC's, powdered earth pigments, Transtint dyes and specific colorants for epoxy.
No problems.

Are using it as wood filler or for your TD sleeve?
-
Looking at the checks in your stave they don't seen to run off the edge of the stave so they shouldn't be a problem, only a cosmetic situation. Fill them with super glue and continue on. Reduce the stave to floor tiller stage then do your heat corrections first before adding the super glue.I don't think trying to make all the heat corrections and recurving at one time is a good idea. I would first get the stave as straight as you want it then add the recurves so they line up with the bow. Also, it's obvious that the stave is seasoned but is it dry enough to build a bow. I know Australia is in a drought but depending on where in Oz you are it may not be bow building dry. What is the R/H there?
On the other staves, seeing the deep checks in the end of the stave and the discoloration I'm wondering just how sound they are. It may not be an issue in Oz but here in the US, especially in the Eastern half any wood that has been on the ground that long would, IMO be worthless as a viable bow wood.
I don't know how close you are to the fires and I hope you are not close and are safe, fire killed/hardened wood could be an option for viable bow wood if you have access to it.
-
Sam it is a 50/50 mix so just for wood filler. The sleeve resin is 2 resin and 1 hardener. I think Jims stuff is 3/1
-
Jeremy stopped over this morning to work on his first bow build.
Got it glued up about 11 AM.

There you go, I must have gone over some magic number to have issues!

That check I went through was what looked the deepest/worst and I only took half a dozen rings off, so I should be good to get below it. I did think about leaving the worst in, but they'd be full of dirt and gunk, so I don't know how well the CA would hold up. It had been down so long the sapwood and bark had completely rotted off. RH? Dunno, but it won't be high - the osage has been stored inside in relatively stable temps/RH for a few years now.
That was the plan with steaming, get it straight first then worry about putting in some bend at the tips. So far it looks like I'll be bending in different places to straighten and recurve the tips so hopefully not re-heating the same area!
On the other staves, seeing the deep checks in the end of the stave and the discoloration I'm wondering just how sound they are. It may not be an issue in Oz but here in the US, especially in the Eastern half any wood that has been on the ground that long would, IMO be worthless as a viable bow wood.

Those staves have been down for a matter of a week or two as I drove past them every day on my way to work, the mid-trunk cut I made is sound so I suspect I just need to lop a bit off the original cut and seal well.
As for fires, we're within site (maybe 15km/10 miles?) of the fire front. We had a months worth of rain last week so they've been knocked on the head for the moment but we still have 6 weeks of possible 40C/100F plus days so it will be going until the depths of winter. As for standing timber, I'm aware of only one species that is truly viable locally and it grows in the wetter gullies so may have escaped. Plus, some bloke going around knocking over trees in a national park will no doubt be frowned upon :biglaugh: I do have my eye open for any that end up coming down though.....

Did you use a pressure strip on the glueup? To me those topless forms need a really good pressure strip.
-
Nice looking Apple wood! I have a bunch of fruitwood. It's generally beautiful stuff, but seems like most of it checks and splits like crazy!
-
Travis, I have a split limb osage bow. It is prob 10 years old and still good. The splits are a lot bigger than the ones you have there! I didn't know the veneers were gonna split and aired it right on up.LOL
That bow looks to have a pretty good hook on it!! Bet she will be quick!!
-
Flem, it does check like crazy. I lost a small knot out of them when I ground them. In my experience it's really easy to split veneers when they have a missing knot or a small crack. I think the hydraulic pressure forces them apart. That's why I went slow airing it up. Tried to let the glue work out slowly.
-
Kenny, they seem quick but I haven't actually tested them. I haven't built one in my weight range yet. Hopefully by this summer I'll get one built for myself as well as one of your FHLB's.

Thats got to feel good and be a relief!

It does feel good. Although if they dont come apart you still have a one piece. This one is acting weird though. And never had one do this but it is working apart some when you pull it back. I would think with the string tension it should not even offer to do that. :dunno:
-
Got the bow laid up and on cure. Used a 2" foam roller to apply the adhesive and it worked out much better than my previous method.

Very cool & versital form Chris  looking forward to what you turn out !

Looks like a prop from the "Mummy" :biglaugh:

Dug through the osage pile in the attic today and came up with 4 pieces in various stages of completion. I vow to finish at least these 4 this year. Been a couple years since I ade anything at all. Looking forward to it.

Hopefully there isn't a dead thing inside
Ritchie, thanks for the kind words. Wouldn't have that thing on the bench right now without your inspiration

Nice looking form and bow Chris! Can't wait to see her unwrapped.
-
Well we are off the form and unwrapped! Bond lines look to be the best I've ever made and zero springback after release. Will post pictures once I can clean it up on Tuesday.

Finished up the bow I posted earlier that the veneers split on. I really like the bow other than the cosmetic flaws. I think it's going to SD Bowhunters to be raffled off at the banquet.

Awesome job 4 point. I actually like it with the split in the veneer. Great looking bow.
-
Thanks Chris, if I was keeping it for myself I would look for some copperhead skins to put on it. That's some nice curly maple in that bow your working on. Gonna be a looker!
-
I like the split veneer also. That bow has so much character, it does not detract, but adds to it.
Speaking of character, that tiger Maple is beautiful
-
Nice job guys. Good looking bows!
-
Travis thats a sweet looking bow love the profile on your one peace curve , chris your bow is not far away from finish glad to see you getting the time for bow work 👍🏻
-
Looks like a chocolate caramel applewood. I like it.

Couple of winners, guys!! Great job both of ya!

That is a sweet looking Recurve all around :clapper:
Chris that quilted Maple is going to be gorgeous, cant wait to see it finished.
-
4point can we see a unbraced picture
-
4 Point, what length is this recurve? 60"? What length is the handle ?
-
Really nice bows guys. That little split takes nothing away from that bow.
Dave.

Goodlooking couple.

Here's a unbraced pic. It's a 60" bow and riser is 18"s.

Really nice

Thanks for the kind words everyone, feels good to be back in the game again. Shout out to Kenny for producing top notch materials!
In other news, I added a new level to "scariest thing I have ever done to a bow" today by tapering the limbs with a table saw :biglaugh:
-
Almost done with this one. Apparently I was too much in a hurry to apply the last coats of finish and had a few run-out on the limb.
Got to do some more sanding before final coat.
Part of the learning curve I guess !
-
That riser looks great z. You have a full length picture?
-
You guys are turning out some amazing bows!!
-
If that is Tbird I let cur 4-5 days before you sand it I have had it ball up any sooner.
-
I took Zwickey for shots, then made sleds, lams, custom riser blank, and boxed it all up!
-
Got 2 teeth pulled other day and now gots an infection in one socket, I can't win. Popping antibiotics today.
-
Dang it Roy !! That’s no good bro!

Hope you feel better soon Roy!
Filing nocks so I can get 'er strung and see what I'm dealing with.

-
A lot lol. 4 core + 2 veneer. I like to experiment?
No springback !
-
Hey Chris hope you'll be able to string it :dunno:
-
Funny you should mention that Mark. My stringer seems to be MIA after the move so I had to use the 'ole shin/thigh method and was barely able to get it to a 5" low brace  All of my tillering strings are too long to get it to full brace so I have to wait for one in the mail before finding true weight.
Initial results:
- 0.360" with Bearpaw clear makes 57.83# @ 28" on the new form (preliminary, expect 62-ish at full brace)
- 0.360" on old form (1" deflex and 1" reflex less than new) put out 63# @ 28" full brace with Gordons clear
- 6 lams between the glass is good for no springback, but in reality that only saved me 1/32" so it's not really worth the added layup effort
More to come once that string arrives.
-
Sorry to here that Roy I hate dental work, Chris looking good 👍🏻
-
Funny they call it an extraction, should be called an extortion.
Chris, you should get yourself a roll of B-50. You could have a string made up in minutes.
-
Had one before the move, but that seems to be MIA as well unfortunately. I suppose it's time to start tearing apart the storage room...
-
A lot lol. 4 core + 2 veneer. I like to experiment?
I made one with 3 cores + 2 veneers
-
Had one before the move, but that seems to be MIA as well unfortunately. I suppose it's time to start tearing apart the storage room...
Some braid fishing line will work in a pinch.
-
If that is Tbird I let cur 4-5 days before you sand it I have had it ball up any sooner.
It’s not Tbird but I did wait 48h before sanding LIGHTLY. Had to lear it the hard way too.
I put 2 new coats on tonight.
-
Roy I had that dry socket thing once on wisdom tooth extraction. Went back they cleaned it out then put some white powder in there and instantly the pain went away. I have wondered from that day if the powder might have been cocaine :dunno: :bigsmyl:
-
I have used para cord in a pinch to tiller ,brace etc but Fast Flght plus is my go to string material 6-8 fps faster then B-50 '
-
A day for me long awaited. I have wanted and waited to get to this for many years. Glued my first up today. Its baking now. Even if it turns out a hot mess, Im still smiling.
-
So tell us, are you planning the next one yet? ;)
-
Kenny yeah of course. And prob another after that. Does this ever truly end?
-
She’s out of the form and cleaned up a bit. So far looks pretty good. Those birdseye veneers are beauties.
-
Gonna be a looker!!
-
Looks like you got a lot of different and wild grain wood going on. Hope it's not too pretty :goldtooth:
-
Looking good Autumnarcher!
So what did you end up doing with the chipped fade??
-
I shortened it to a 16” riser. Still not decided if Im gonna stick with 58” or go to 56”.
-
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ] [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
Looking good Autumn! That birdseye is sweet for sure.
-
You need to consider the change in draw weight when changing the limb length, since you already shortened the riser length it will be interesting how that also affects the targeted draw weight.
-
Found my stringer but the two B50 spools are still MIA. No matter, the BCY-X string arrived today while I was trimming the limbs to even width. Braced at 7 3/4" pulling 58.3# @ 28" after all the sanding.

Lookin good Chris. What’s the length on that bow?
-
Thanks Bvas, it's 62" nock-to-nock.
After looking at this picture again, I think I'm making a new form when this build is done. I feel the need to build something unique. I don't know if that makes sense...
-
I'm curious what you don't like about the design Chris ? Im like you I always try new designs it's not like I need a new bow just like to keep advancing skills !

You can post pictures directly through the website as long as they aren't over a certain size, although I'm not sure what the limit is (1-2 MB?). Here are the steps:

Did that on computer, fone is saying attachment too big and I can’t find a way on fone to take smaller pics!

I resize them from my phone by sending the picture to my wife on FB messenger and then saving what I just sent her since the app automatically resizes them. Alternatively, you could put them on your computer and then resize them in Paint or something.

There's an app that I use to resize the phone photos which are typically 3 to 4 megabytes. Here's a screenshot of the working screen which also shows you the name of the app. This screenshot was itself resized. Once you resize the resized photos automatically go into their own folder and the original stays on the camera roll in it's original size.

I KEEP telling you guys to try Imgur.com for pictures , it's free and easy.

Tapatalk was easy but not working now for two days. Think they may be trying to pull a photobucket on us.
I know you can post a link out of Google photos here I think. can you pull photos out of Google to Imgur. Cause I take my pics with the phone and they got to Google then you can post them right on Tapatalk (when it works.) :dunno:

Roy, I’ve used imgur but if I can send direct from my fone without going to a website and back and forth it would be handy.
I sent that last one direct from fone after changing some settings but it won’t send pics taken previously.

Makin those jig thingys makes you want to pull your hair out till you get them right. :bigsmyl:
You are right and I keep my fingers crossed and hope that it fits just right when I glue the first riser together.
But actually it wasn’t too bad getting this set done. I made both forms by hand, used a ¼ router bit to shape the counter-forms. Then reshaped the counter-forms on my oscillating sander which has a 1/8 offset. So theoretically I am left with a 1/8 gap for the accent strips.
-
Bue, yes unibond800 on riser.
-
Finished chasing today.

Looks like fun  You making bows for the kids too?

I definitely hope to. Right now I will settle for a working bow period. And then hopefully I will make them bows also.
-
Went out after work today since the weather was crappy and cut and split 8 really nice Osage staves and 4 billets to try a TD.
-
Multitasking today, building a static osage recurve and a flintlock rifle, both are almost done.
-
Damn Eric! You are an ambitious dude. Which one do you think will be more effective?
Did you bore the barrel yourself? Is there anything you don't do? :bigsmyl:
-
Shoveled a little snow, then shoveled a little sawdust in shop, now making some spliced lams of curly maple and walnut with an s curve in middle and some accents.
-
Said a few bad words when I found out the $400 circuit board if junk on my pellet stove in the shop. :o
-
Man, Mike, That Stinks!!

That is my 5th flintlock build, much more effective than my selfbow, I bought the barrel ready to go.

Okay folks here it is. The $400 piece for my pellet stove. How many of you see $400 in this this
(https://i.imgur.com/qQpZDzh.jpg)
-
I would have fixed that for $100., + the cost of a capaciitor :goldtooth:
-
Mike....I had to replace that same controller twice. The first one was on warrant .Then with the second one I had to replace the blower because it wasn't compatible with the new controller. So I feel your pain
-
Al this one is suppose to be an upgrade for my stove. Thought I was gonna need a fan to $200 more. Had that been the case I would have looked into another stove.
So Flem how much total .....????
-
Ok lookat the top of the Powow page and find out how to change your layout for better mobile viewing. I did it the viewing part is pretty neat. Now if I can figure the pic part out I will be ok
-

Depends on which little doohickey is fried.

Dont think nothing fried. Guess a guy could ohm all them dohickys tho.
-
Dont think nothing fried. Guess a guy could ohm all them dohickys tho.
Thats about the gist of it. One of those capacitors or switches or transformers or rheostats on that circuit board is cooked.
Find the specs and test them. PITA, but thats what you do, if you are cheap like me ;)
-
That's exactly why I wouldn't let myself buy one of those. Not much can go wrong with a good old wood stove. If it has a blower and it goes bad, a fan behind it will work in a pinch.
-
I agree with the wood stove. But then you have to have a wood source and your insurance goes up. By the time I bought a chain saw spent time cutting wood and hauling it and money saved on insurance the $400 board might not look so bad. :bigsmyl:
-
What about the cost of the pellets? I've never bought them or priced them but they must be a factor.
-
On 25-30 degree days about six hours each day a $ 4.99 bag will last me 2 days. My shop has the 16 foot garage door. Walls are well insulated but no ceiling. the soffit area is stuffed with insulation so no leaks there. It has 4 pellet feed rates on manual mode. They work like stoker furnace. Pretty amazing the amount of heat out of such small amount of fuel.
.
-
Yeah, $2.50 per day is pretty economical.
-
Roughed out then straightened up an osage stave. Had some deflex, prop twist and tip alignment issues which thankfully were all in separate areas so I was able to straighten it out somewhat fairly easily. Enough to get it bending and to brace height and then re-straighten if needed.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
The white box behind the stave is an asthma nebuliser I've converted to a vacuum pump, so hopefully will see some sucking duties at some stage.
Went and had a look at another house, has plenty of land so I'd be able to set up a full 3D course if I could be bothered, have a lifetimes supply of firewood and possibly harvest some timber for staves/boards.

I had a bow like that many years ago. Was a very simple design. Prolly why you like it Stickpops..
-
Nice gift! Plus it looks like it is in really good shape.
How does it shoots?
-
Mike when it's put together is there any side to side play sorry for all the questions trying to see how tight the tolerances are thinking I could mill some brackets similar ,I would bet it's stronger then a normal riser I would guess it's 6061T6 aliminum very comonaly used in those years they really put some thought into that design thanks for sharing it !
-
It seems to have a bit of taper on the joints where the slide together. And the screw has a slight taper also. so no slop.

Forgot to mention, that green Maple looks pretty Damn awesome
-
That stabilizing your riser wood must work.
Stickypop said his 3 inch riser grew to 3.5 inches.
You go big boy:)
-
I love the green on that maple. It really adds to it’s natural beauty!
What are your plans for this block? Combine it with natural wood colors or more green?
-
Could put the wave accent and keep it green or I think black or charcoal would work. If you wanted really wild yellowheart with red accents.
Actually Roy it was 3.75 :bigsmyl: Rather have a good cheeseburger somedays. :wavey:
Here is a nother piece of harder wood Claro walnut. This one gained a ton of weight and is the first piece of walnut that I have done that did not float after the soak. Vaced about 20 hours and soak for about 12 days.

I finished my flaire jigslast week-end. This week I used a scrap piece of walnut to try it out. The block isn’t quite thick enough for a standard riser but I can probably make my son his first glass bow with it.
Glue lines looks ok. Time to get more wood and get my swap bow started

Got my riser cut out and ground to shape today, glued tapers together a d did a couple dry runs. First run, riser needed a few minor tweaks but 2nd go it fit really good. I gotta work on that stupid lil joint glueing butt ends of tapers together. Didnt get em perfectly flat. Tried sanding a d end up with a lil dip that shows up on edge. NOt horrible. Ut Im not in love with it. Tinkered with it a lil but was going wrong direction. It should be ok a d at worst it will be under leather grip wrap
This build is a curly maple riser with black glass. very interested to see what it comes in at as far as weight based on the design dimensions. Even had Kenny scratchin his head a lil bit but we took a good guess and wil go from there. Glue up in the morning.

Coffee has Trigonelline in it, and it breaks down adhesives over time.
-
Mark, I washed the paper with dish soap and rinsed well. Filter paper is amazingly tough and it absorbs epoxy better than any other paper I have used. The used filter paper I used previously is holding up good. I have not noticed any degradation and that was at least 3 years ago.

Hey guys, surgery went well. I am doing quite a bit better than I thought I’d be. No tears were found. They cleaned up bone spurs and found a spur that had broke off and was floating around the joint. They did relieve my AC joint to make more room for my nerve that goes under it. Looks like I’m 6-8 weeks in PT and about 3-6 months until I’m back to 100%. Gotta find me a nice 20-30# bow for Compton in June. Then comes getting ready for GLLI in august and deer season and the hope bow in October. Got a bow project sitting in the corner that I gotta decide on a riser for.
Cody.
-
Good news
Take it easy :bigsmyl:
-
No tears, thats really good news! Enjoy your PT, Ha Ha. Seriously, stretch out the PT as long as you can, it sucks, but it will pay you back for the rest of your life. Hope this is the start of a turn around for you and yours.
-
That is good news, take it easy for a while.
-
Remember, PT (pain & torture) ain't doing any good unless it hurts!
The weather warmed up and let me get a few things done today. Made up some blockers for the sides of this kid bow form. And glued some lay up blockers on the ends. This will make a 54" blank but pretty sure it's going to make a bow closer to 50".

This is a 1" form and using a topless hose form might not work out due to the hose width so it's going to be a rubber band form. Instead of using a single pressure strip, it's going to be two thin ones back to back. The idea being that they will be flexible and a bit stouter than a thicker single. Still need a strip down the center to prevent cupping.

Double checked the fit of the little bocote riser its good. Just need to feather the fades. But that won't be happening cause I dropped it! :(

Now, I know walnut don't get no respect as a riser wood but it should be able to handle this little bow. Got a start on it but the sun was going down. More to come, of course.
The walnut has been in my wife's family for 65 years. It was cut into rough boards in Omaha and my wife being a military brat, the wood travelled the world. It has lived in Paris, Arizona, Sacramento, Arlington and now here in Colorado. It oughta be dry by now. :)

I have dropped a riser on the floor too, with the same result as yours. Made me real angry with myself for being careless. Looking forward to your build.
-
Maybe CA glue that piece back on the riser.
-
Hell it's only a gwass bow.
Super glue her back up....
No big deal..
-
I get the allure of expensive, exotic woods from far away places. It's like a shiny nickel at the bottom of a fountain. But that Walnut has been the object of a life time of custodianship. Thats invaluable.
I might be a little biased ;)
-
Then I guess you have to make two bows! :biglaugh:
-
Maybe CA glue that piece back on the riser.
I don't think it would work. It wasn't feathered out yet and probably would go south.
I am making two of these but got a nice piece of Zebra from Kenny that will be fun to play with.
If this form doesn't toss me a good bow, I have two other forms standing by. :)
-
You guys made such sense on the super glue suggestion that I had to give it a try. Glued it together and it's going to cure overnight. I'll give it a go on the rigid and see what happens.
Looks pretty good.
-
Looks good! Buy the time it get soaked with epoxy during pressing, it will likely be bomb proof
-
I think you are right on. If it can survive the feathering it should be solid.
-
Mike, do you use a program for your riser template pattern?
-
I just happen to know that CA glue trick can work. :bigsmyl:
Actually worked on the victim bow. Got the limbs and riser drilled inserts in and out of pins. Fastenal was closed.
So I done this.

Very cool thats my favorite riser wood very nice !
-
Mike, do you use a program for your riser template pattern?
Yes, I use a program called Cad Std. When I got it it it was a free version and there was also an upgrade version. The free one was completely adequate but eventually I got the upgrade solely to be able to do offsets. Which I I rarely use but it can be handy.

Sometimes I wish I had a 8 inch wide beltsander, but since I do not I use this, works very well. I like to have one side of a recurve limb dead straight before running it through a machine so the width is parallel before drilling. I cut a 8 inch wide belt and stretch it out on my dead straight work bench.
If your finished width taper is straight from the fades, using this thing when you are nearly there will give you a slight trapping to the back.

Bue that looks like a lot of elbow grease.
Cut in the sight window and limb profile and got it in two. .002 taper bottom to top front to back and .008 bottom to top on the sides made it come apart really easy.

-
Not much EG, I take the glue first on the bandsaw and band sander.
-
That cut sanding belt is an excellent idea! I have always glued down multiple 8X11 sheets of sandpaper in line, but it's not a good solution. You can end up with a lumpy or slightly uneven surface or the edges start lifting at some point. Then you have to clean off the glue residue.
-
Helped bro put new blades on his 12" planer . Had no jig to set blades so we made some...
Final check we ran a walnut 1x8 thru and planed both sides, it was .001" off from one side to the other!!
-
.001, thats hard to beat . I'll bet the "factory" jig would not be that tight.

I might have missed it, but how do you lay it up? Between a couple of boards and a stack of weight, in a press, vacuum bag???
-
Good idea Shredd. May I ask where you bought that inflatable drum?
-
Flem, do you use some kind of thin epoxy?
-
Steve, I'm going to vac press it. I used to use a two sided tray and clamps, but it was not ideal. The vacuum is awesome. Not only does it press the crap out of it, but it eliminates any air voids.
Bue, I use this System Three Clear Coat. It's low viscosity, I think it's 400-600 CPS. It wets out the paper or fabric real fast and it has a long pot life.
I was going to do this today and document it, but a steering rack said no way dude.
I think after I get done crawling around under my car I'm going to relax and watch "The Omega Man" :goldtooth:

Right on, I've done a few wet vac-bag layups for RC gliders, so I know the joys of a low viscosity resin and no air bubbles  A short term work colleague makes composite wooden bikes (as in wood plus composites) and uses some really high end/tech stuff like pre-preg boron and autoclaves and I've been given an invite to come have a look when he heard I was into wood bows and composites in general.
Errr, what's the hand on the bench doing?

There is many words in English that I do not know the meaning of.
When you say that an epoxy have a low viscosity, does that mean it is thin or easy to spread so a brush can be used?
-
Means it's thinner but doesn't define it by any particular scale.
Always thought your English was pretty good.
-
Most epoxy manufactures use a "centipiose" or CPS scale to measure viscosity or how a material will flow.
For reference, water has a CPS of 1, motor oil would be in the range of 200-500 CPS, EA-40 would be 100,000+CPS!!!
-
Bue just replace the word viscosity with thick or thickness... So another wards high viscosity would be very thick as in honey and low viscosity would be less thick as in water...
Think I better you speak English than me...
-
Thanks, got it :)
-
the state of being thick, sticky, and semifluid in consistency, due to internal friction.
"cooling the fluid raises its viscosity"
a quantity expressing the magnitude of internal friction, as measured by the force per unit area resisting a flow in which parallel layers unit distance apart have unit speed relative to one another.
plural noun: viscosities
"silicone oils can be obtained with different viscosities"

Found this at Wal Mart. Prolly work great for tip overlays and be some quicker. Too large a quanity to experment with though. Anybody seen it in smaller containers ?

Thats decent quick epoxy. I've got it in a syringe. I think it came from my local Ace hardware.
It cures harder than some other fast set epoxy's.

Yep but I Wasn't happy with the old reflex profile I think Im going to tiller the bow out to 20" before sinew these short bows are tuff for me Im not used to them ! Got a dog (coyote)at dusk yesterday Flem with the new toy !
-
Tried out a new epoxy today, its System Three's G2. I glued up several thin pieces of walnut similar to spectraply for the first time. So far I really like it we'll see how it holds. It reminds me of the epoxies I used back in the 1980s for building bows.
-
I don't think you will be disappointed with the G-2. This is what I was using back in the day before System Three bought Industrial Formulators and discontinued it....
I forgot that I had these little samples to try before I had started using the stuff. These have to be 30yrs old and guess what's, it's still good! The resin had crystalized a little, but after a short time in a warm water bath it was good to go. Wish I had more of it.

Mike I'd need a ladder to spray the top of that bow. :bigsmyl:

I have been making some special bow making tools for the upcoming St Jude auction. A guy gave me some exhibition grade walnut gunstock cut-offs. This stuff is unreal but I only had enough wood to make 4 gizmos, I even signed these because they are so special.
-
Beautiful Walnut! You need some fancy pencils for those
-
Buddy you can take it out of the vise and hold where you need it to be.And the long handle gives some leverage to hold it about any angle. Reclamp until next coat or can hang it to.
-
Great idea Mike, that would work great for my takedown risers.
-
For TD risers I use two long 5/16s bolts to hold and hang them while spraying.

With a little bit of extra time on my hands I decided to get the extra insulation down in the ceiling of my shop. I have had the materials here since November but when I had time the weather was bad. Well the shop is only 16x 9, an old garage that I could not put the car in and open the door. So I took the over head door out several years ago and framed it in to accommodate a 40" swing out door I made. Put 4 inches of insulation in the rafters and covered with OSB so I could still have storage up there. Insulated the walls and boarded it with OSB. Small in wall gas furnace keeps it warm but not enough insulation in attic, snow melts and freezes on roof causing ice dams.
Well so everything stored in the attic was taken out to the driveway, 2x6s nailed in, 6 more inches of insulation placed down and 7/16 OSB placed over the top. Can't hardly crawl though to nail it down, getting awful small up there. That was 2 days ago, I'm starting to be able to move without hurting to much today. Getting old ain't for sissies!!!!! :)
-
Insulating in cramped places, yes I know all about that.

Got sent home yesterday, my wife was displaying 'some' of the C19 symptoms and works with vulnerable people so went to get tested. I've been canned from work until the results come back, so might as well make the best of it
Worked on my latest Osage selfbow, 69" and hoping for 50+ @ 28" so I'm legal for deer. So far it's 45 @23 with a couple of whoopsies to work out so hopefully should come in on target. I had to do a little straightening and de-propping with dry heat which leaves it with a little deflex in one limb, and reflex in the other. The left limb is bottom with a slight reflex in the last 1/4 of the limb, and the right has a slight deflex about halfway out.

Steve, it looks like most all of your bend is in the handle area?
-
Leave the center 1/3 alone and get both mid limbs working. That will relieve the over binding in the handle area a bit...and don't bend it that far again until you correct the problem.
Are you exercising the limbs after each wood removal?

I’m off work for two weeks. I had a sore throat so now I have to be isolated. Lots of time to catch up on projects around the house.
Today I was working on a flip cart that will hold two belt sanders and organize the belts and other bits. This is part of my longer term project to clean up and organize my small shop.
Dave.

Here’s the scrappy lams...
Bocote back / osage belly
See why I don't throw thin lam blanks out?

Nice lams Kenny!

My scraps should be so nice! Those woods look good together

I got some stable maple for my next riser. I had 1/2 gallon of green and half a gallon of black left over so I mixed them. The result is pretty close to Bear green futherwood. And a pretty nice scarf joint.

Just cooked this little pink bow. Pulling the tape was a little nerve wracking. When the lay up was finished, there lay one of the pressure strips. :scared: so, cut that end loose and put the strip in and wrapped it up again! Luckily all was well except for a little bit of squiggle at mid limb. I was a little nervous about using the topless hose on such a narrow layup so it was done with rubber bands.

I used Jess Stuart's split lam method to get 1" cores. Glass is 1.5" Bear Paw cut to one inch wide. Got most of the boogers off so now to figure a limb profile.

Maple core, pink lams and bocote riser from a piece found on the floor.
btw, this is the riser that i posted recently that was dropped on the floor and chipped. You all suggested super glue and it worked. Survived the feathering process nicely.
Here's a little experiment with this layup. The veneers are so thin that scarf joints didn't work. So i put a patch across it made of onion skin paper .002 thick and super glued it. I could've turned it to the inside but wanted to see what it looks like. Overlay should hide it.

That's dyed Koto wood. Only .019". Very delicate. I can get it thicker but not in the pink. Gotta be pink for a granddaughter. The thicker stuff is Swiss Sycamore.

Looking nice Monterey.
Well done with the onion skin paper. I already thought of doing something like that. Was thinking about using mesh to allow the epoxy to go through more easily. But never thought of using paper.
Thanks
-
The paper is delicate. Would like to come up with another solution. I did the same thing to the cores on the back even though they are .060.
-
So did the smooth on saturate the onion paper??
-
So did the smooth on saturate the onion paper??
I can't say for certain. The SG did saturate the paper. I'm thinking that by keeping the paper narrow it won't be a structurally significant point. In addition, it hopefully will come in about 20# at 24 to 26 inches.

Put the final touches on the granddaughters bow. I'm pretty satisfied with it although every bow tells a story of what can be done better. I'm already working on another one for my other granddaughter.
Some pictures. The string is a bit short and is fine for tillering but it will get a new string and some arrows. That first picture of the nock was taken before final sanding.

Are you exercising the limbs after each wood removal?
Yep, 20-40 pulls each time. Long story short there was a bit of operator mis-read which was compounded by an equipment challenge and I ended up with a couple of very mismatched limbs so I've thrown it in the corner but might pull it out at some stage and rescue it for something - can probably make a very light/kids bow if I weaken up the strong limb to match. Haven't had a good run, another equipment malfunction (read operator error) meant I ended with an overly short r/d boo backed cypress board bow which looked great until I went too far with a long string and took too much off the tips <sigh> Again, I can probably take it back to a lightish/kids bow so I threw it in the other corner until I forgive it enough to get back to it.
Soo, I started on my latest - a 66" ASL from spotted gum with boo backing (if I screw this up I've still got a 4th corner before I get back to the beginning   ). It's 1.25" straight until the last 8" tapering to 1/2" with a 12" riser and I'm planning on a straight glue up to keep it simple. This is the first fully shaped riser/handle that I've done, and I'm a little unsure how to shape out the fades to paper thin with my limited tools. Belt sander mounted on it's side and use the end roller as a kinda spindle sander?
-
Interesting....... I have wondered about using Eucalyptus. It's pretty wood, really heavy!
Is it at all brittle? For your fades, if you can get a clean cut close to the line, you can taper it without too much trouble with varying grits of sandpaper wrapped around some 2-3" PVC pipe

Flem
I can't really comment not having worked much/made a bow with it yet but I do know spotted gum has been used successfully here quite a bit both in board and stave form. I suspect it's a bit like your hickory and red oak, not the first choice but readily available and works ok. It would be interesting to see if some heat treating does anything for it. There are other eucalyptus' that have been used successfully also, but they're much harder to get hold of in general. It's unfortunate that our other widely available eucatlyp in mountain ash/tassie oak etc. makes poor bows as it's relatively easy to find in straight grained boards.
Roger on the PVC, I'm assuming you're talking about final shaping once glued up on the bow?
-
Scrappy. A buddy needs a riser for one set of his Black Hunter limbs. Some left over camo and bloodwood. And am seeing why they sell these bows so cheap.

Steve, since you mentioned wanting to get your fades paper thin, this is what I was thinking.

Thanks Flem, ended up doing a combo of all three - cut closeish, belt sander, finish with pipe. Worked fine with a bit of elbow grease and got them see through on the tips
Only question is, will the nodes at the end of the fades create a problem when tillering?

Been doing more gun smithing then bow building lately but taking a break & got the Laubin bow floor tillered and knocks cut ready for the long string this is a short bow hoping to get 30 1/2" 45lb 55ntn ! Still need to bend the hooks but tillering to 20" first and then sinew !

The nodes at the fades won't be a problem.
-
Looks like your pushing that one to the limit, Ritchie!
-
Lol yep I can make 28" for sure beyond that will see Laubin made some 52" @26" 65lb so at 45 lb I got a shot at it I think ? Really no pratical purpose for this bow other then challenging build for me !
-
You know the drill Ritchie, only one way to find out!! :bigsmyl:

No truer statement then that Kenny might put that on my tombstone :biglaugh:

You are one for pushing the envelope, Ritchie!.Looking good so far.

Hey, we would never get anywhere if we kept listening to the old farts set in their ways... Granted that they do know a good bit of what is going on...

Hey! Not all of us Old Farts are set in our ways. :)
Today I layed up another kid R/D. This one for another granddaughter.

Hmmmm, hard question to answer. It's sure to offend somebody. :)
I'm 73 and don't think of myself as old. Just don't think about it at all. When I look in a mirror it sorta shocks me.

I think you’re a bunch of old farts. One of which is especially grumpy. :biglaugh:
But I can’t think of a better bunch of farts to hang out with.....young or old. :archer2:

It has a bit of a hinge in the right limb exacerbated by a twist but I'm pretty happy with it. Couldn't stop laughing at how fast it flung a little kids arrow though, she's a blood thirsty little girl, so the local mice/pest birds might be in for a fun time. It did take a bit of set, but that might have been me pushing it a bit on the tillering tree to see if it would break.
Actually, this was the first serious test of a new timber that I've not used before, a local accacia/wattle which goes by 'bloodwood' but I'll be buggered if I can find a species specific name for it (there are many other endemic 'bloodwoods' so it's not that helpful). Grows fairly straight and branch free for bow sized lengths, and I can get hold of it fairly easily. Outer sapwood is softish and peels off easily but heartwood is nice and dense and generally nice grain of the few staves I've split and de-barked so far. Only a couple of downsides: Borers love it but so far really only seem to hit the sap wood so not much of an issue, but I have noticed that my other timber seems to be sprouting a few more sawdust holes underneath so hopefully I haven't brought in a heap of bugs.... The other is that my sinuses react like crazy to it. I can do a session without mask with osage, 'boo etc. (not good I know!!) and not suffer too much but this is one wiff and my head starts to ache. The upside is that is forcing me to wear a proper mask any time I'm working with timber now, I don't want to end up with allergies later in life and I'm already halfway there (allergies, not age I hope   ). Gotta make a start on a full size selfbow now to see how it works at bigger weights as I was really impressed with how well it pulled.
Our turkey got the chop the other day too, so I kept all the wing feathers to have a crack at making my own fletchings. Dried them over the wood fire which worked well.

Nice job, hope she loves it. ;)

Coming along nicely!
-
Okay I have something a bit different coming up. A bit more hook in my curve limb. Hoping for a little extra without the added weight of wedges etc.

That should work, but with only glass on it, it may get interesting. I blew one up with a profile about like that one, first pull. It was only 1.5" wide tho...
-
That looks real interesting Mike keep us up to speed !
-
Kenny I have a one piece with a similar hook and a lot more working limb than the TD will have. If this works and can keep it as quite as the present limb it will be great. The only thing I hear when the string is dropped is a wisk from the feathers. And it and my Kenny bow are the two I shoot the best.
-
Got stabilcore in them? Yer gonna make me get my recurve form down aint ya!! :o
-
Got stabilcore in them? Yer gonna make me get my recurve form down aint ya!! :o
Naaaaa---I don't believe ya
-
Mike, what are you doing for tapers, etc on that new design?
-
I like the look of it Stic
-
Kenny don't like Recurves , He won't make one! :o :dunno:
-
Norbert when the hooks start getting hookier :bigsmyl: no more than.001 forward taper. and stablecore. keeps a bit more meat in the base of the hook where you need it. Now you go to getting really hooky then you need carbon to keep them straight.
Come on Kenny it will be fun :biglaugh:
-
Hoping to get a string on it tomorrow.
-
Nice looking profile. What angle are your limb pads?
-
13 degrees. maybe a little flat. But works greart on original limb.
-
This is a bow for those that are worried about misplacing it in the field!. Had the block from Kenny couple years and never did any thing with it and as I had bit of epoxy left in the cans, I threw this together.Bow is a Kenny design deflex/reflex and is 64'' ntn and 37# @ 28'' Belly veneers are an Aussie wood called Mackay Cedar.Red glass on back.
-
13 degrees. maybe a little flat. But works greart on original limb.
Looks right to me. I just made a form from a bow I have that I like and it looks like it takes 24 degrees. Big differences!
-
Bigbob I expect if Roy is even looking anymore he will want that pinkish bow
-
Stic, will be interesting to see it with a string on.
Bob, some wild colors, I like it.
-
On lunch break. I am pretty pleased with how this turned out. the visual look is smoother then I thought it would be. It did not offer to go sideways at all and needs a bit weaker bottom limb
. Shot about 6 arrows and pretty quite with the B50 build string. Will do a full draw when closer to done.

It's got a really nice look to it Stic
Can I see a limb width picture? ;)
-
Nice profile. Looks similar to the prototype I just made. 50s style that works on my standard longbow riser, so they are interchangeable. It has a limb pad angle of 10 degrees. Mine is 62" though.
-
That is nice Norbert.
My limb width is 1.625 at the butts and tapers the last 10 in. to about 11/16s at the string groove. Put the stick in it a little bit ago. It is 29 there. For a longer draw prolly need a bit more angle on the pads.
-
Looking great. At 29 inches the string is not much open. Does it feel smoother than the previous design ?
-
the draw feels about the same. this will be fine for my draw length. for more than 29 might need a 62 in bow. Gonna put a little longer wedge in the next set.Straight taper a working wedge. the base coats revealed parts that took more dye than others===== interesting.

Thanks hope to get it top coated today.

Thats a seriously grainy looking base coat. Looks like 60 grit. Is that sprayed T-bird?
-
Nope out of T bird. Its brush on lacquer sprayed on. Will steel wool it before Krystal dull top goat matte.
-
All done. Quitw -stable and a tack driver.

-
That happened way too fast! Nice rig!
-
Nice Work,, like the new hook in those limbs!
-
Very nice. I am with you on a bit longer thin wedges.
-
Looks good, so is it everything you hoped?
-
Okay here is the plan. Kenny made me a sled .001 with the built in PL only. I done some measuring. For the length I need I can cut the lam to length from the small end and that gives me 4 in. past the wedge of PL. This will move the bend away from the fade and hopefully load the limb more at full draw. Most times I would not worry with it. But right now its a bit hard off the fades at 29 and want to be at least 30 if needed. For my full draw of 26 on a good day :bigsmyl: it is fine tho.
-
Stic... What is the length of the riser and string for that bow??
-
Well, today I worked happily in the shop til about 2 and was kinda caught up so I serviced my work truck, a Dodge with a Cummins. For awhile, I wouldn't have gave $20 for a truck load of em… Whoever placed that fuel filter where it's at with the removal method they use was a sadist.
-
Kenny that Cummins will way outlast that Dodge. I worked on Cummins high horsepower 43 years. And built a few Bs along the way. They do have a kit for that fuel filter that puts it right up top where it is easy to get to. Be cheaper after market and not from Cummins.
-
Shredd it is 60 in. bow 17 riser string right now 7.5 brace is 57 in.
-
My full draw 26 in. is not working these limbs very much. I have another set coming up with a PL about three in. past the fades should help
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41dDKB86P34
-
Looks like to me they need more taper to get them bending mid limb. Just my opinion wrong or right
-
The PL will move the bend out some for more tip action. Yes
When I get this limb lined out and know my stacks this will be my limb veneers
Buckeye very pricey so ya dont want to screw them up.

I'll bet it does. I was just looking at an Eastern tree book and it's looks like you live in Buckeye territory Stic.
Could not find a local sawmill?
-
I call this my corian countertop bow  Finished it today. 60 in. 47@28 and has the powerlam lam off Kennys sled. Goes about 6 in. past the fade.

Nice... Good to see you working on bows again...
-
Like the tips.
-
Put the finish on the second granddaughter bow. Decided not to stain the maple riser and do kinda like the look. The form for these little bows was a reduction of the full size form template for the full size bow. Just did a percentage reduction in cad . Simple as that. Here's a picture of a full size and the little bow together. Big bow is 60" and the little is 50".
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
-
Monty... So Cool that you did that... It's hard to visualize what a smaller bow looks like, so being next to a standard bow gives you a better idea...
-
Mike, I've found the shape can be percentage but stack is harder to guess. Did you % that also?
-
I think that plain Maple looks good. Simple and clean. It's easy to get caught up in the quest for the "bling" look. I know, I have been guilty of unnecessary adornments. :bigsmyl:
-
Mike, I've found the shape can be percentage but stack is harder to guess. Did you % that also?
No, I kinda swagged based on suggestions from Jess Stuart. These could've had a little thicker stack but better light than heavy. Also would benefit from less thickness taper. This totals. 004 which I went with due to maintaining the width well out the limb. These two girls will out grow these pretty quickly so they will be due for something off the full size form.
-
Monty... So Cool that you did that... It's hard to visualize what a smaller bow looks like, so being next to a standard bow gives you a better idea...
I was a little bit surprised at how well worked. If you look carefully you can see that the little bow is reflexed a bit more. That's because the thin limbs had almost zero spring back off the form.
-
flem, I have a bunch of well seasoned maple and plan to use more of it. Especially with an ASL it doesn't look good when it gets on the gaudy side. Just my opinion on that.
-
Quote "these little bows was a reduction of the full size form template for the full size bow. Just did a percentage reduction in cad "
I'v done that many time on my CAD program but never on a bow.
You got to keep the kid's away from the cell phone a little bit.
Nice work

Thanks, Max.

-
I like it Crooked, it kinda looks like Kirk's bows but different. :shaka:
-
Okay took a vdo. while ago. Just remember on good day I draw 26 in. Right at the end I pull it maybe 27. But it has a lot left in it. This one has tip wedges but not so sure it would need it them.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSqrcxXumq8
-
I think the tip wedges are fine but there is possibly more tip length than needed. You could easily cut an inch off each end I think. The way it looks at full draw it seems like as it is there is probably another four or five inches of draw left in it.
-
Exactly Mike. for my short draw I could do that. I can also make the straight taper wedge longer to get less working limb for a shorter draw. Still in the proto stage.
-
I think you are on a good track with it.
-
She has a lot of draw left!
-
:shaka:
-
:shaka: Looks Nice Mike... :shaka:

Very nice Stic!
I am with Monterey, tips could maybe be shortened a bit.
Hard to hear on the video, but does the tips part close to the string generate any noise?
-
Awesome

If it is braced right you can barely see day lite at the tips so not an issue.

What kind of wood do you have there?
-
Bubinga riser with charcoal A-wood fang, Birdseye Maple lams, the big eyed piece.
-
Going to look nice
-
Yup... Love the Crescent accent... Use it in my bows... :shaka:
-
Hmm I would call it a canine.
This stinkin BP glass. Just layed one up that came out 50@28. did the math to come out 5 lighter. Still came in 7 heavy. Should be able to loose that much tho. anyhow its a Crazy Stic. Just put veneers in the stack and allowed for them. :dunno:
-
That's going to look purdy
-
Thats good Crooked!
That BP Glass must have a higher fiber to epoxy ratio....using Less glass=less limb mass=more performance :clapper:
-
The ups and downs of BP has me thinking to go back to Gordon's and take my chances!!
-
Thats good Crooked!
That BP Glass must have a higher fiber to epoxy ratio....using Less glass=less limb mass=more performance :clapper:
It' makes it hard to guess stack. I have a crude spine tester on my glass cut table. Judging from the Gordon's marks I put on for reference, the BP .040 x 1.5 right now is about like .043 in Gordons so that would be like adding .006 to your stack if using Gordon's for reference???
Buuuutt... this roll is about gone so what will the next be?
-
Moved my thickness sander toward the wall and edge sander some, I ordered some Dust fittings from Grizzly to hook up both machines. :bigsmyl:

I need to clean up the shop too :knothead:
-
Thats good Crooked!
That BP Glass must have a higher fiber to epoxy ratio....using Less glass=less limb mass=more performance :clapper:
I'm confused. you must mean higher epoxy to fiber ratio, or an epoxy rich lam with less glass? Seems that less glass would make a bow weaker, not stiffer, yet you are saying the reduction in mass increases performance?
Has this been discussed in more depth somewhere? I would like to understand better whats going on.
Thanks

I spent about 3 hours cleaning up the shop today and Monday going to hang a Double Air Filter

Drank some beer and worked on a template for TD limbs.
Then had some more beers and figured I better stop working on the template before it gets all wonky.
So now I’m just drinking beers.

I didn’t do much today, but I did cook up some stuffed venison backstrap medallions. Mmmmm!

When you get old a feeble you have to improvise. My camper battery was shot, in most cases you don't need one as I am always hooked up to power from my truck or at the campground.
It still bugged me that it was so weak so I decided to change it out. Now, with bad body parts I can no longer pick up a heavy battery up so I had to improvise a way to get it out of its awkward compartment.
I rigged up my deer dragamatic 2000 (my deer mover invention) to loop the mule tape over a gas line in the compartment, hooked to the battery and pulled it out of the battery box with my cordless drill. Next I put a ramp under the battery and slid it out of the compartment on the ramp.
I used a hand truck and 4 wheeler ramp to get it into the bed of my truck.
I reversed the procedure and put the new battery back in the compartment. I never picked up the battery during this swap out.
-
Very innovative. We gotta keep on keepin on whatever ways we can and you are doing quite well at it.
-
Worked on my form for TD limbs. Still gotta get dowels cut and installed for bands. This is my first go round with a TD.
I’m converting my one piece 58” D/R into a 62” three piece with a 14” riser. Fingers crossed, hopefully everything works out.

I’m not adding any extra, but I have a little wiggle room if needed. My flats will be about 1” longer than needed.
But I am planning on letting my tips run extra long just in case.

Got all the jewelry put in my form and made a sled for cutting limb pads on riser block.
Getting closer......but still got a lot of stuff to do before I get anywhere near building a bow.

Hi Mad Max,In the past I only made bows shaped like hill-hype and it’s my first time trying to make a bow shaped like RD. :)

Nice looking work Keyang! And welcome to the bowyers bench. We really do have people from all over the world on here. It's pretty awesome that this somewhat obscure pursuit finds passionate adherents from all over the globe!

That's a looker Bob...
Not to be negative... But you can keep them boxes... I just use an electric blanket now and never looked back... I bring it up to 110 to 120 degrees which is plenty to cure epoxy... Fold it up and takes very little space... I use the hot box as a kiln now...
-
Monterey. I use an asymetrical design, I find it easier to shape handle that way.
-
I like the looks of yours Bue. Mine might end up a little less suave than yours. :)
-
That looks Slick Bue
Slick = Really Good :laugh:
-
Looky what I came across today... Been kinda wanting one of these for a while... Anything to help cut my sanding time down... Offered him $10 and he took it... Motor runs... Might need some tweaking...
I'll make a nice granite table for the disc with a fine grit paper on it to do certain jobs...

Good catch Shredd :)

Well I am back folks. After contacting Terry he said the new system something was clicked that would not let me login. Fixed now. So here is what I am doing today. Calling it my scrap barrel bow. Some pieces to good to throw away. Cherry ans KY. coffeebean riser with tulipwood and zebra veneers.

I been looking at all the pitchers you guys post here. Some Monterey guy had some that I used as a bad example which was a big help! :)
-
What ya got there, LongMike? Looks like Cherry from here.
I love that you do all your layups outside  I would be afraid of skeeters in the ointment.
Speaking of Skeeter, where are you?
-
It's an ASL 68" with some reflex in an arc. Green back and gray belly with charcoal spectra ply riser. No cherry, just good ol maple cores. This one gave me a scare cause my topless set up busted a peg just under the riser. The cord is wrapped over itself so many times that for the most part it still held but pressure fell to 25# at about hour #2 or so. I aired it back up and waited it out. All is good! :) Tip overlays curing now. I'll do a few pics when it's looking like a bow.
No skeeters but i start my lay ups early before it gets too hot. Hit 99 yesterday bit was about 70 during this project. I do almost everything outside cause my inside is a 5 X 10 alcove in the garage! :)
I'm in Colorado a ways NW of Denver. We are a pocket of sanity between Denver and Boulder. :)

There is some nice country around you, Mike. Lots of recreating folks too!
Been there a couple of times to play in Eldorado canyon and drink beer in Boulder. Don't think I have ever been in a town with so many brew pubs :bigsmyl:

I am still suffering the after math projects of a move that turned... cantankerous shall we say :banghead:. One project after another and none of them the ones I would like to be doing. I have a boat load of veneers I have cut just waiting to be used, just no time for them right now.
But I am now in a 30x50 shop on 7 acres, so once I get to building I have lots of room to bury arrows for my mower to find.

Yeah, the recreating is amped way up during the pandemic. Then there's a whole lot of people who got nowhere to go but are tucked away in out of the way places in the mountains. There's a 14 day max per location in the NF but they seem to be leaving them alone.

I spent the last couple weekends making a bed. Today finally resumed making dust in the shop.

How about a pictorial on how to use it? I have a Dowell It that seems straight enough, but getting consistent alignment is a booger.
It’s pretty similar in design to crooked stick and crittergetters jigs. Only difference is mine is a two pin and one bolt design. That way doesn’t matter which direction limbs or riser are facing.
Block is the same length as the limb pads and same thickness of material(1.70” for 1.75” material after initial sanding). Block will be bolted to the piece of granite, so riser and limbs can be clamped to it. I have two sets of drill guide inserts. One set for riser and one set for limbs.
Hope that helps. You’ll have to wait til I get the rest of my material for more pics.

Here is the thing on these bows. They are wood. Unless you have a mill or CNC you are not going to get thickness perfect everytime, So you need that block mounted on a machined plate or the granite will work to by clamping it. To keep the same side down when drilling you need to be able to drill from each side of the block. This keeps one as straight as possible. Then if your thickness is not perfect all the uneveness is on one side. sand the other side parallel with the straight side. And there you have it and most times be good to go.

The block is bolted to the granite.
I went with the bolt centered between two pins so that I am always drilling thru the jig the same direction and don’t have to flip the riser over.

Do you clamp a backing board on the limbs to keep from splintering the glass on through holes?
-
Do you clamp a backing board on the limbs to keep from splintering the glass on through holes?
That’s what I intend to do. You pretty much have to with this design, or you would be putting the hold down clamps directly On the fiberglass.
But I will probably also put wood overlays on both the back and belly side of the limb pads prior to drilling.
-
Darn that centered bolt hole is a good idea. Wish I had thought of that long time ago :knothead:

:goldtooth:

Looks good
How long is that going to be?

Awhile back I put some spalted sycamore veneers in a longbow limb. My guess is they had some moisture in them because the delamed. So had to make another set of limbs. scrap barrel stuff again. walnut/cherry and maple belly.

Doing some colors... Red...
-
And Wine...
-
Shredd your finish looks good. But I got ask about the groove in the shelf what the purpose? And do you not think that weakens that area.
-
I had not had a problem yet... Most of my bows are under 50#... The slot allows you to shoot vanes and it is a lot easier than sanding that corner...
-
Very nice, Rich..
-
Looking great Shredd. Do you have picture of the entire bows?
-
Nice, I like that wine color.

thanks guys...
ztonz.... here is a pic of that design... your standard r/d bow... i don't post pics of the whole bow any more because most have seen it and it's nothing new...
bue... i thought it was purple and my girl at the time said it was not... so after a little discussion she said look, this is purple and she showed me a sample of the color... she was right... :biglaugh: so i called this color wine...
excuse my penmanship... my computer got issues and my capitols don't work so well...

That is a good design, I bet a speed in excess of 190 feet with 9 grains pr pound bow weight

Thanks Rich. Nice bend !

Nice one Bvas. I like the bend. What taper are you using?

Bvas, bow looks great.

Thanks fellas.
Z-The bow has .003 taper, but has wider tips (9/16” at grooves) than normal for me.

Built a new target stand today. Just have a few holes to drill for my 3D woodchuck and skunk.

Nice.
Do you have a fetish for skunks?

I put together my bday present from Mrs., Limb profiling just got a little easier. I have an oscillating spindle/belt sander that I have always used and could never keep a straight line on it. This should help.
Now, if I could just find some time to build a bow again.

Nice, yer gonna love that Lonnie.

You know Roy, I really like that wolf I carved for you. One of these days I’m going to make an entry door with a window like that. When I get my butt out of town and back into the country that is.
Dave.

I like it too, it hangs right above my bows, been there for quite a few years now. I'd bet 8 years anyway.
-
That long? Time is flying by a bit too fast for my liking.
I’m glad you like it. Picture something like it about three times the size on a front door with light from the house shining through the glass where the moon is.
And a pair of matching side lights.

I finished a maple longbow backed with hickory. I have been wanting to do some 1/8" hickory backed bows for a while, but I didn't have a saw that was powerful or precise enough to cut the slats from lumber until recently. This bow is 66" long and 50#@27" with about an inch of reflex left after tillering and shooting it a couple hundred arrows. The string is 14 strands of 452X and the overlays and handle are che chen.

I agree with you completely......this was an experiment at best because I almost never cut an arrow shelf into wooden bows. I got a wild hair on this one. I did ponder radiusing the shelf as your diagram shows, but that tropical wood is CRAZY HARD and I was afraid I’d mess up the maple so I left it with the radius it had. Seems to shoot really well.
Thanks
Matt

Flnt VERY Nice eliptical tiller and bend at full draw!
How much backset did you start out with for it to hold an inch after it was shot in?
I typically start with 3” of glued in reflex when I apply my normal bamboo backing. The boo backed bows lose maybe 1/2” to spring back, but the hickory lost a full inch so the bow started with 2” of reflex before I started tillering.

Finished off an ash longbow a few weeks ago. Was a bit of a trial as I've not used it before - after osage and the local hardwoods, it felt as soft as butter. Took a bit of heat treating to align everything and get rid of some of the natural string follow. Has taken a heap of set despite some heat treating, but next time I'll go wider and trap the back a little to reduce it some.

I initially thought the right limb in the braced/full draw pics would be the bottom as it's a hair stiffer, but it feels a little better in the hand as the top limb. Not much hand shock, so now I need to add an arrow pass and a handle wrap. Finished with beeswax, which made the toasty wood darken up nicely. It didn't take me long to get confident with it and would be happy shooting it out to hunting distances with a 550gr (~9gpp) arrow. Fast she ain't, but it is whisper quiet - with a leather side-plate I reckon a bees fart would be louder.
Steve

I tried first on my wood lathe and got it not bad, but certainly not perfect. After that a friend cleaned it up further on his metal lathe and it is very close now.

Back when I built mine, the lathe didn’t solve it cause I had issue aligning the cylinder on the frame. What worked for me was to lay sand paper on the bottom board and rectify the cylinder in his final position on the frame

First limb off the form. Glue lines looking good.

How long is that bow going to be Z ?
-
That is a beautiful circular tiller  No wasted limb wood on that one!
Thanks Flem, it took me a bit to work out how to tiller it, as this is the first bendy handle I've done. I went with just slightly stiff tips so I guess it's really very slightly elliptical.
Great tiller on a nice ash bow. Ash is one of those bow woods I don't have luck with. Everyone I've made fretted but I never heat treated an ash bow either. Well done on this ash bow. :notworthy:
Thanks Pat, so far no fretting after a couple of hundred shots..... I was a little afraid it would and found a few little marks when tillering but discovered it was actually my scraper that was making the marks - with a file/rasp they disappeared and never came back
Nice work Flyonline!
Thanks, this is the first bow I'm happy with the tiller.
Flyonline
How wide is it?
Thanks Mark, it's a tickle over 1.25" wide x .75" at the handle tapering straight to 5/8 x .5 at the tips. I plan on doing something like a pyramid next time, nice 'n' wide

" Thanks Flem, it took me a bit to work out how to tiller it, as this is the first bendy handle I've done. I went with just slightly stiff tips so I guess it's really very slightly elliptical."
Guess that depends on which part of the ellipse you are looking at :saywhat:
-

Yeah, a true cylinder is only one part of the alignment. I am going to have to shim the bottom board a touch to get it perfect with the drum surface, but that isn't too major of a problem.
Those are wicked hooks on your new limbs, I look forward to seeing how it all looks and bends when complete.

How long is that bow going to be Z ?
Well, my initial plan was to do a 60”. But I noticed last night that I screwed up the wedges length/position. So my current plan is to build it as a 64”, run some test and then drill holes to make 60”.
It’s part of prototyping. No mistake. All part of the learning curve
-
WoW, Z.... Looks extreme... What is the radius near the tip??
-
Hey Max how many inch past the hook did you cut your nocks? 2”?
I was thinking of making 2 sets of grooves for test purposes

1-1/2", I think longer could be better
I want to see the string angle at full draw, looks like your limb is short, it might make it open up NICE

Hello Flem:It’s made of PLA.For it’s softer than metal I made it thicker than the old way.The screws are mounted in right after heated.

Nice jig.
What’s your riser made of? These limbs in the back ground look interesting too.

Hey Key thats pretty cool! I still have print film photos from the bowyer (before digital and internet) when I inquired over twenty years ago about his bows.
Hello mister,The bow is already old as I am and I found it in a flea market, from a bowyer. The moment I saw it I found it cool......I’d also like to know its stories behind.
-
I'm kind of excited about this tiny little bow. I cut this osage tree in central Kansas in 1996 when I was 15 years old. This was half of a branch about 4" in diameter and has well over 30 rings to the inch. The growth rings were so tight and so undulating that I knew my skills weren't up to the task in the late 90s when the stave was dry. It took about 3" of reflex while it dried.....then it sat in the rafters of the garage at my mother's house for over 20 years until I got it down recently and decided to try something fun with it. I used my belt sander to flatten the back (keeping the reflex) rather than trying to chase a ring because I really don't think I could have. I then backed the bow with bamboo using TB3 for glue. The stave was only 53" long and 1.25" wide. It has over 200 shots now and I can pull it all the way to 27", which kind of amazed me....I thought it would explode, but here we are all tillered to 55@26" and it has kept all of its reflex. I was amazed that the reflex stayed and there isn't any follow. Sometimes things just fall into place and you get lucky. The draw pic is at about 24" and the bottom limb looks weak because of the angle. The bottom limb is actually slightly stiffer. I'm hoping to finish the bow this week.

Brown and Osage looks great.
That thickness sander looks fine.
-
Thanks guys.
-
How you adjusting your table, Mark?
You can't see it, but the bottom board is hinged on the far side of the sander frame and there is a carriage bolt through the frame that lets me tilt it up and down. The boards that are clamped on were just to fill space enough to let me push a couple test pieces through without a sled. Under normal operation the sleds will ride directly on the tilting table.
Mark
-
Watch for side to side deflection with the single point adjuster on your table. I had a problem with twisting when I made mine. You might not have a problem, your table is narrow, short and might be stiff enough.
But its amazing how you can be off a few thousands side to side just from hand feed pressure.

I got a new hip 12 days ago (anterior replacement), I can't take pain meds so it has been a bumpy, no sleep ride.
When we have this stuff done and are in poor shape after the operation we swear we will never feel right again.

Did a lil shop rearranging today. Small shop sure has its challenges. Same footprint on everything and trying to squeeze a lil more room to work. Its like turning the clocks back and thinkin yer adding an hour to the day. Anyway, I think this arrangement gonna work out pretty good. At least now I can get to the table saw and chop saw

Used it for its first real work this afternoon, grinding a bend test sample for a red oak lam bow I am working on. Did a great job, kept thickness to within 0.001" over an 18" long piece.
I just realized I caught my helper in the second pic. He is a 16 year old pug/beagle cross who likes to keep an eye on the shop proceedings.

Your sander looks excellent Mark  Did you make a channel on the table for your sled to ride in?
Looks like you have some good company also!
Thanks for all the comments. I did put a couple rails on the table to keep the sled in the middle. I am anchoring the sanding paper on the drum with a #10 screw on each end, so the screw heads stand proud of the drum surface and the sled needs to stay centred to not get gouged up.
Should have been hunting.
Isn't that most days, though? :cheesy:

Made some awfully purty veneers outta some osage and a gizmo to clamp my form into for glue ups. Took one other bow out of form cleaned up and retaped it ready for layout. Got rear ended on Monday (my truck, not me🤔), then a pipe burst in the house on Wednesday, and dealing with a drama queen at work.

Getting better already bud. I made out a police report for the truck and got a claim into the insurance company.
The water damage wasn’t as bad as it could have been. It missed my books that are stored in the basement, and yesterday, I finally got mad at the drama queen and he might have quit. This guy was hired less than two months ago and he thought he ran the shop. The guys I work with are a good bunch. Big relief!
If it’s not raining this weekend I’ll try out the saw. 😁

Went to use my pressure/vacuum pot and the damn gasket started leaking. Of course I don't have a spare, so I go online to see about ordering one and find out they want nearly $40. :o for what turns out to be 5oz worth of hard rubber. For that much, Im thinking maybe if I look hard I can find a silicone gasket. No luck.
But I did see where people were making their own out of RTV gasket maker, but that was going to be way too sticky to get in the gasket channel. Then I saw this oogoo stuff. Its just silicone caulking, corn starch and coloring. Sets up real fast because of the corn starch, but it also makes it less sticky, so I could actually press it in and level it with a little screed tool. Best part is I didn't have to wait a week to get another crappy hard rubber gasket.

Starting on an upgrade to my dust system. Currently running an older single stage Jet rated 650 cfm. After roughing out 2 bows with my edge sander ( I havent used a lot up till now) it was obvious my 650 wasnt cutting it. looked like it snowed in the shop and even my respirator was struggling. Time to upgrade.
So I ordered a Dust Deputy cyclone gizmo, and will be upgrading to a Harbor Freight 1550 cfm collector hopefully next week. I"ll have less $$$ in both than if I buy one of those fancy name brand dust suckers.
Now Im lookin at fittings etc to hard pipe my system and get all fancy and professional looking with it.
That edge sander spews out dust more than politicians spew out empty promises. Gotta tame that thing. Did some serious RedGreen engineering on it with some cardboard and duct tape and its better even with the smaller collector but what i need is more suction.
Was toying with hunting tonight but my wife said shes gonna sit in my blind so Im makin a bear roast for dinner. ( her bear) and shopping DC parts and fitting on the puter
-
John you will love the Dust Deputy cyclone.
-
John you will love the Dust Deputy cyclone.
It should def improve things, everything Ive read on them has been very positive. As for t he new DC, called Harbor Freight and there is supposed to be a couple of em on the truck Wed morning so will call first thing and if so make the 2 hr drive over to pick it up. Can at least run that bigger single stage until the DD shows up to hook in. WIfe wasnt happy about buyin more shop stuff but she knows the dust is an issue that needs improvement.
-
I've had the dust deputy for years and they are very effective. 99.9% of the sawdust stays in the bucket its mounted on and practically nothing goes into my shop vac. I was impressed with the results.

true story....

Picked this beast up today, 3 hr drive each way. Got home and despite a useless instruction book where with about 8 different size bolts and screws, the was no chart showing which ones went where. Nothin a lil head scratchin and a splash of bourbon didnt solve. Now just waiting for the super dust deputy to arrive. Will need to order some hose and fittings but will wait till its here to be sure what I need. I think when its all hooked up its gonna look like a giant hooka pipe for sawdust. [ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

If you use the bigger dust deputy. you can mount that blower on the wall and run the pipe outside and get rid of that bag thing. Mine puts 99.9 percent of all the dust in the drum. The only time it got any outside was when my drum got full. Using the 4 in. model.

I finished a bamboo-backed osage today. This is a piece of osage that I cut in central Kansas in 1996 when I was a teenager. I turn 40 next month so its been well seasoned and it was absolutely was worth the wait. That piece of wood worked like butter and just wanted to be a bow. The bamboo is dyed with latigo leather dye and the bow is 51" nock to nock and 54#@26". Hopefully I can get a turkey from a groundblind with it in the spring.

Thats what I'm thinking Im gonna do with mine, pipe it oustide. Do you notice any issues with sucking all the heat out of the shop if its running for a while like when making tapers etc? Also, did you notice very much reduction in airflow after attaching the dust deputy? My DD will be here Monday then can get it all hooked up. The filter bag is only 5 micron so Im leaning towards ducting it straight outside. Thanks for posting the pics, very helpful.
-
you will get less restriction with the dust deputy... with less particles going to the filter it will take a long, long time before it begins to clog...
-
Actually if you can mount blower right on top of the deputy I think you may gain a little bit. At the time I could not do that. Cant remember who this is but may be better.

Already have one. I can't imagine how I got along with out one before.

Are you guys grounding the air flow systems?

You guy make me jealous. Wish I had a place that needed dust control! :)

Mike, maybe that's what happened to your hair?:)

Mike, maybe that's what happened to your hair?:)
Yeah, maybe. :)
-
Are you guys grounding the air flow systems?
For now I decided not to, Ive read mixed bag of opinions on it, some say yes, others say not necessary. I,ll run it a while and see if I have static issues. If so I can ground it easily enough.
-
what is the purpose of grounding?? dust sticking to and clogging the the works or fear of a fire or explosion as in paint booths??
-
fire or explosion
-
I have had my system in place for 20 years, one time the ground wire came loose, when I touched the hose to move things back where they were supposed to be the hair on my arm stood up from the static electricity in the pipe.
I grind bamboo on my belt sander and have a lot of fuzz in my pipe at times that I have to reach in and clear out. One spark in that stuff and my whole shop will go up in flames.
Ground your system.

I ground because I hate to get a nasty static shock :o

A static spark with find wood dust is quite explosive. :readit:

This is a piece of Osage from a 100 year old tree on my place, it's been dead for 16 years so 116 years old.
I resaw some thin lams for a riser--.030 to .070 thick, no sanding just glueup
I did the same with Bacote
The osage looks the same when you cut it, and I can't tell the difference.

Thats an awesome hunk of wood, art work is pretty good also
How did you mill that monster?
-
That block is only small part of a 5' long log, on the right side of the block (1st picture) was a long rotting crack, look at the rings.
I took that 5' to a friends saw mill and made a few cuts.
If you ment into lams---I use a straight edge to draw a line and go to the band saw, then the edge sander.
After I get one flat edge I start cutting it up to width.
-
I was wondering if you had a mill at home, something I covet. A friend with a mill is even better!

Me too Mark..

After much farting around I started final grinding of the lams for my very first lam bow. It is all wood in red oak. I'm doing a Perry reflex experiment with it where I glue the core and belly up with a bunch of deflex, then pull it forward into moderate reflex with the back lam in a second glue up.
Got the back lam down to final thickness and started working on the tapered core pieces. Should have the core and belly pieces all done by tomorrow evening if things go well, then I need to get my form done and I can start gluing stuff up.

Be interesting to know if that Perry reflex is really worth the trouble.

I've wondered about that too. Maybe light will be shed. :)

One bow won't be definitive, but lots of people have had success with it. Calculations say it can reduce the stresses on the belly by 15-20%, which should equal a lot of set avoided.
My goal with pulling the belly and core into deflex before pulling that assembly into moderate reflex is to gain as much stress reduction as possible on the belly while ending up with a mildly reflexed flat bow with the tips only 1.5-2" ahead of the handle. It should make for very low set, good performance and a bow that is easy to string without equipment required. If I just pulled it all into 6+" of reflex it makes for a bow that is tough to string and the back stresses get very high with all the bending required from that amount of reflex.

I think the term "Perry Reflex" is a misnomer, about 25 years ago someone attached the term to any bow that had a reflexed limb and it stuck. If any of us had an osage bow that had a natural reflex we proclaimed it to have "Perry reflex", everyone used the term whether it had merit or not.
Unless you are following Dan Perry's flight bow design to the "T" you just have a reflexed bow, not a Perry Reflexed bow.

True, it is described extensively in one of the TBBs. I think the first or second.

In very brief description the bow is built from lams (typically one belly lam and one back lam) and the belly piece is pulled forward into reflex, then the back is glued on to hold the reflexed shape. This preloads the belly surface into tension, lessening the final strain it sees when pulled to full draw.

I wouldn't say it is a misnomer, but it certainly was misunderstood and the name misused to describe any reflexed bow, as you say.
Unless you are following Dan Perry's flight bow design to the "T" you just have a reflexed bow, not a Perry Reflexed bow.
You don't have to build the same bow as he did, but you do have to use the same concept of preloading the belly in tension in order for it to have the same effect (and be accurately called Perry reflex). What I am doing is the same as what Dan did, but I am adding to the effect by initially deflexing the first glue up in order to increase the preload the belly sees when it is pulled forward and glued to the back lam. I don't know if Dan ever built a bow like that, but he would certainly understand it as just a modification of his method as described in TBB V3.
I can't claim any credit for the idea of a multi stage glue up schedule to maximize the reduction of belly stresses. I got the idea from reading about the Duo-Flex bow in the Bows of the World chapter where Tim Baker talks about making a modern duo-flex using Perry reflex to increase the performance. Baker's idea (pg. 79) is to splice the belly lams in a more deflexed position than the final bow has, then pull them forward into the final shape when gluing the back lam on.
All I did was think about how to achieve that same effect in a lam bow where the limbs are not billets spliced into a deflex angle to start with. My solution is to use two forms, one for the first glue up that deflexes the belly and core lams in an arc (similar to what a bow looks like when braced), then a second reflex form to pull the belly and core assembly forward and glue the back lam on.
I will post pics of everything when it is done, but that will likely be a few weeks at the rate I am going.

Looking forward to the results.
Wonder if there would be any advantage to employing the concept in a glass bow.

I made an all Bamboo Perry reflex once. One was enough.
-
Wonder if there would be any advantage to employing the concept in a glass bow.
I looked at this some for my first FG bow. I don't think there is any point on a recurve because the limbs are so thin that you can't generate any significant preload on the core, but it could reduce set on a Hill style longbow where the stack is fairly thick and they are known to take some set. One project at a time...
I made an all Bamboo Perry reflex once. One was enough.
:biglaugh:
Why was one enough? Didn't work out or just too much work? I would think anyone who will go to the trouble of making fibreglass lam bows wouldn't find the basic Perry reflex construction much trouble.

since I was wide awake at 430 this morning, I pounded my initial pot of coffee and hit the shop. something about those quiet early morning hours a guy can get some work done without any interruptions, aside from refilling the coffee cup. Took a bow out of the form, got it all cleaned up, retaped, layout, and then tapered limbs and ran across edge sander to finish roughing it out. made up tip and handle overlays, and glued those on. Readyt to cut string grooves and tiller tomorrow. sweet lookin bow, zebrawood riser with a walnut I beam, figured eucalyptus veneers with rosewood overlays. everythign went really smooth with it so far. Will start shaping everything tomorrow. No sideways pics today. Phone was busy with playin a podcast while I worked. After I got all that done this morning, went and checked traps, my friends grandson got his first pine marten catch today so that was exciting. My fisher sets were untouched.

On Thursday evenings a few guys are getting together doing som blacksmithing. We are not professionals, but enjoying ourselfs. These are some laminated blades I made. The top shiny one will be tempered and annealed tonite. The others are ready for fine sanding and sharpening.

Very nice Bue. They look professional to me so far.

Very nice, Bue. Would you happen to have a buffing wheel setup?
That would polish them to a chrome looking finish.
Would make them shape as a razor also.
I always sharpen my knives on a buffing wheel.

Yes Roy, I’m buffing along. The thing with laminated blades is that you do not see how well your forge welding is done before the blades are almost finished.

Ever have any issues with the fades popping loose on a design like that?
I spent some time freezing in the woodshop this afternoon (-16C with a brutal wind chill out, winter has returned with a vengeance). Sorted out a problem I was having with my thickness sander tapering the edge of the lam on one side (the issue was dust build up under the sanding paper wrapped on the drum) and made some jig parts for my glue up form. Along with the experimental Perry Reflex bow I am trying an adjustable form design that will allow me to make most any side profile I want on a glue up without having to endlessly make plywood forms that cost $$$ and only make one shape. If it works out I will post pics and details. If not it may never be spoken of again... :knothead:

I do something similar but I use a hacksaw blade with the teeth ground off... I also take a used 6" disc of sandpaper with a sticky back, cut it to size and fold it over the hacksaw blade and stick it to it... Now when I fold sandpaper over the blade it does not want to slide around...

No bows made for me this year. I did make some new broadheads. My earlier ones the tangs just does not secure them in the arrow shart very well. So I doubled their lengths from .5" to 1", so the whole head is about 3" long. the tang is 1" by .25" give or take. I found that not only do they really get secured better they added weight has tamed some of the arrows better. I am using old circular saw blades.

I have a clock timer set 1 hour on, 1 hour off 24/7 until I get done.
the bow is about 86* wif infrared temperature gun and about 72* in the bow room.
Going down to 21* tonight, will see what the bow room is tomorrow?

Did you distill this stuff yourself? It does not look like any Hooch I've ever had :scared:

Nope, its made with 190 everclear, vanilla vodka, orange juice, and powdered vanilla coffee creamer. Some concoction my wife found. Its really tasty and packs a punch.
-
My FIL used to make peppermint schnapps with everclear, water , and a little sugar. He kept lightening up on the un needed ingredients, finally got it where he wanted, and it would make you take stuff back you didn't steal. :biglaugh:
-
Glad to hear that! I was a little worried. Recently, someone I knew accidentally drank some foreshot from a fruit distillation.
-
Drinkin foreshots is bad business. We made this stuff and a lemonade shine thats really good. Plus neighbor gave us some apple pie. So we’re well sticked for a while. That orange stuff though. You’ll confess to crimes ya never committed if ya get too deep into a jar of it.

Permanently bad.

My 18yr old ShopVac finally died. I'm sure most of you guy have and use one of these. This one did a lot of dust collecting. Can't count the hours it spent connected to a RO palm sander.
I needed it to clean up a small flood when it died. I still had an old 3 stage Vac motor from a HVLP turbine build sitting on my bench, so I thought why not see if it will work. Same size, dropped right in the motor housing in the lid. After I got the thing grounded, I thought I would give it a test and see how much water it would suck up in a minute. It was sucking and bucking so hard I turned it off after 20 seconds. It had sucked up 8 gallons! I tried it connected to my palm sander, too much suction, I could barley move the sander!
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Makes the single stage motor these come with seem worthless. If you have a ShopVac that dies, you can get one of these 2 or 3 stage motors for around $60, which is way less than a new Vac.
-
Nice fix! I still have my old sears shop vac Ive had for almost 30 yrs. original filter. Its been beat to death knockin the dust out of it but still gets the job done.

I still have the same filter, but it's a CleanStream Goretex I bought when I bought the vac. It might last longer than me!

Picked up this 4' infrared restaurant heat lamp yesterday and mounted it over my workbench. Man is it nice, never had a infrared heater before. Everything below it is toasty warm, including me when I'm working there. It's a bittersweet acquisition, it came from a local restaurant that had to stop serving because of the virus and then the owner died from it. The family decided to close it permanently after that. I wish they still needed it and I could give it back.

Cool and I see new buffing wheels?

Yes you do! I mounted them on a cheap Grizzly grinder. I think it spins too fast though and the wheels are not concentric, but hey what can you expect from HF!

Did you say that with a straight face?

That looks great. How narrow are the tips at this point?
I have been looking at doing static recurves in a similar fashion because none of the wood I use has been willing to survive tight bends, even after boiling. Making static recurves like your siyahs and then splicing them in solves that problem for me.

If the joints are done correctly the TBIII will be as strong as epoxy on those woods. It is only the oily tropical woods like ipe that need epoxy, anything that doesn't repel water will glue fine with TBIII.

The tip are about 1/2" wide now
.050 will bend with the sitca spruce.
This a glass static recurve using the form below
4" from the nock to the bridge

This is the form I made years ago with a top form and fire hose.

The sitca I have is very dry so I dipped them in water about 5 min. before glueup
1/4" at the tips, the belly is 1/2" wide

It's a bamboo slat with no belly lam except the last 10" out to the siyah.
I have more control with a glass bow, so I'm going to give this a try with the slats.

They look even skinnier. Not at all crazy narrow, plenty of room to work with.

I meant none of the woods I have will bend into recurves at full thickness of a limb, the way guys bend recurves into osage without a second thought. It's a different story when laminated on a form in many thin strips. That works well for almost all woods. I don't have Sitka spruce available but I do have Lodgepole pine that I am going to try some tests with later into spring. It is slightly heavier than the spruce is, but still a better stiffness to weight ratio than most other hardwoods. Should make a decent static recurve tip.

That is beautiful. Is the peg sticking out both sides for the string to bend over?

Regardless, you still seem to have a good handle on making bows, especially tricky wood ones. That snakey osage was a work of art.

It's called a bridge, like on a horn bow lever (Siyah)
Same style bow with different bridge

I had plenty that I burned and cut up, so maybe I will get lucky again

Any more progress with this bow? I'm looking forward to seeing it braced and drawn.
Lest I be the target of derision for not doing anything myself, over the last few days I have got my form and post pieces all worked out and finished, glued up the core lam pieces into a full length single lam and hopefully will be boiling and forming the belly lams on the riser ramps today. After they dry I should be able to do the first glue up stage of core/belly lams/riser. I guess I should be taking pics of all this for a future thread on the form and bow build...

You posted some, so that seems fair. I will get some this afternoon if the light is manageable and post them. It won't be anything fancy yet, just a bunch of loose parts and a lam bow 'kit' needing gluing.
That tiller shot shows a very sweet bend, I look forward to seeing it with the laminated handle.

If that exotic work of art does not work out as a bow, I bet you could use it to join a Jug band. It looks like its going to have some twang :goldtooth:

I promised pics, so here they are.
First off, the new jig/form:

The spine is a piece of 3 1/2" x 2 1/2" x 1/4" steel angle that I inherited with our place. The posts have a shoulder piece brad nailed to them to set the height at that point. They are not set accurately along the angle iron, just clamped on to show the general idea.
This is forming the belly lams onto the riser ramps after boiling them for 15 minutes:

I think I am going to have to do another boil/forming tomorrow to get the ends formed properly and then let them sit a couple days to dry. After that the glue up starts.

I like how it's adjustable. Do you use a radiused fixture to clamp the lam in while boiling?

Very nice..

Yeppers. With a little garlic salt and some peppers and onions.

Prolly canned road kill.
Did ya rinse the asphalt off it first?

Nah. Just had to pick a little gravel out.

The adjustability is why I went to the trouble with it. There are so many possibilities of lam bow shapes with Perry reflex, recurves, R/D long bows, etc. that I wanted to be able to reconfigure everything without making a new form every time I wanted a different bow style. I also wanted multiple posts so I can define a specific radius to the limb bend instead of accepting whatever shape the limb wanted to form when bent over one or two posts.
This is more a proof of concept than anything. The posts will eventually have some sort of height adjustment built in so I don't have to keep brad nailing the shoulders in place. I figured I could live with this for a bow or two just to see if it works as I hope, then make a better set of posts once I have some experience with it. The posts are currently just 2x4 construction lumber that I cleaned up and radiused.
I just boiled the lams flat and then used the clamps and blocks to force them into the curve of the riser. I may think about a fixture for future work, that sounds like a good idea. The lams are ~0.155" where they are bending and it took a surprising amount of force to bend them into the riser.
Yeppers. With a little garlic salt and some peppers and onions.
That sounds tasty. Do you have a recipe you can share?

What I have heard about boiling or steaming is you have about 15 seconds to get it clamped, but I've never done it?

steam has a lot of latent heat, maybe steam in place and tighten the clamp as you go.

Depends on what you are trying to do, but that is mostly correct. The heat comes out fast and the wood gets its strength back as quickly as it cools.

Hmmm, I can see that should reduce the forces involved and give a smoother bend. I will make up a block that clamps to the back of the riser and gives a flat ramp for the lam to ride up on and try forming it again, thanks.

it might also help if the two outside clamps bottom legs could hook in the same hole in the middle where the center clamp is

Flem, gonna be used for accent stripes in a TD riser.
I did the same thing one time Bvas, I bet thickness sanding end grain on that osage was a pain in the bu__.
Mine was Hard Rock Maple. :knothead: mine wanted to burn when sanding
WE ripped it the wrong way :nono:
