RC, I make mine sometimes with all the lams in front of the riser. I like the looks of it to. I do however run the glass up the ramps of the riser, over the fadeouts.  I know John Schulz used to make those natural style longbows with the bamboo back and lams beneath it. I've thought about making a bow with glass only on the back, but I'm afraid the glass back would overpower the belly and break. I'm sure somebody's tried it before? Good looking bow by the way!

Mr. Lamb, that's a really good looking bow. Is that bamboo on the back or glass?

Todd, I know that this is possible because I owned a Pete George "Timberline" with a glassed back and natural belly.  I'm pretty sure I read a description of either a David Miller or a Sunset Hill with glass only on the back as well.  I'm not sure what the advantage is, but the bow I owned shot very nicely.  Just as "Goshawkin" Nick about it.  I'm sure he'll weigh in at some point.

Give it a shot.

Charlie, can you give us the low down on that bow?  Materials, specs, etc.  It looks really sharp.  Love those rounded fadeouts.  They look so much cleaner than the squared off ones I've seen on some bows.

Just put in my order with Nate at Bamabows for a new Tribute.  Miss having a heavy bow around, still got the arrows for it. She's gonna be called 'Werewolf', 70" 100@32, wenge and black glass.  Was gonna do HHA, but I've been wanting a bow by Nate and his prices are great for a 4 lam bow.  Ought to be a real beast.

Twoforhooking,
That bow,for all it's lams,is only 57# @28". It was my first attempt at this style longbow so I loaded it up with lams.

Todd,
It got a bamboo back. All the bamboo came from Howard Hill Archery. I wanted to make a bow like one of Howards early bows.
It's got little back set but after shooting a while and unstringing it, it follows the string slightly. After some rest it returns to backset.

RC,

If I was going to put the handle section on top of the glass I'd worry about it separating after a bit. That's been a thorn in my side on self bows and wood to wood glue up.

I'd make sure I didn't use a really hard wood, but something fairly soft or good and flexible. I'd also make the fade outs long and thin.
Good prep of your glue surfaces goes without saying.

Mikebiz,

I think I covered it's make up pretty well above. The only thing I left out is that I put a piece of carbon in it. I'm not sure I gained anything with that.
The riser piece is walnut and I set it on top of a piece of black fiberglass to fade into.
The belly lamination is a pretty thick one so I had plenty to work with when bringing it to weight and tiller.
By fading the taper of the handle into the belly lamination like I did, I avoided problems with the handle lifting at the fades.

I used a smooth piece of leather for the grip instead of rough out like you normally see. I kind of like that feel.

I just sharpened up a couple Hunter Heads getting ready for the upcoming whitetail opener in a few weeks here. What broadheads are you guys planning on using with your Hill bows this season?

What an amazing collection of bows, information, and history are contained in this thread!  Having been bitten HARD by the Hill-style bug, I've gone back to read this thread in it's entirety (currently on page 420) and am continually amazed at how much info it contains.

I'm waiting for my Northern Mist Shelton and Two Tracks Echo to be built, and keep coming up with changes to my order details as a result of this thread.  I've placed a WTB ad in the classifieds for a Hill-style bow, to get a bow in my hands sooner, but zero offers yet.  Been watching everywhere I can think of for used bows:  Footed Shaft, Raptor, RMSG, Auction site...Nothing!
