(TG)- Tell us about yourself.
(Dano)- I was raised in a Marine Corp. family, spent a little time at most Marine bases. We settled in So. California, where I spent about 35 years, till I got smart and moved my family back to Illinois where I was born. Needless to say it’s been like growing up all over again. I had only hunted quail and squirrels with a shotgun prior to moving here. When I became aware of Bowhunting, I was intrigued. I started shooting a compound, which only lasted till I saw a pretty, old Bear Kodiak, and got hooked shooting traditional equipment. Once I had seen some of the fine selfbows guys on this site and others made, the love grew. Every season gets better as far as seeing deer and not being seen by them, I don’t mind being a rooky at this sport, I’m having a great time at it.
(TG)- How long have you been bow hunting with traditional gear?
(Dano)- Three seasons
(TG)- Any heroes? Any role models?
(Dano)- My Grandfather, and all the fine bowhunters on this site.
(TG)- What got you started bowhunting?
(Dano)- One day my daughter saw a neighbor practicing for deer season with his compound and said she’d like to try shooting a bow, so I bought her and myself a bow and we began to learn to shoot them. Then I got her a Little Bear and Myself a Kodiak and the real fun began.
(TG)- Do you have any favorite memories or kills that stand out? Tell us about it!
(Dano)- Nope, when I do I’ll let ya know.
(TG)- Do you remember the first animal you took with a traditional bow? Tell us about it!
(Dano)- Last year I loosed an arrow on a small doe on an evening hunt. Didn’t find my arrow, or a blood trail. Searched for two days with no luck, I can only guess I made a poor arrow placement, and I did fail to cross a creek to search for her, because I was told a wounded deer won’t go in water. Beat myself up the rest of the season. Two valuable lessons learned, search everywhere no matter what and if you do your best you can’t do no better.

(Dano)- Selfbow, Rivercane arrow with tradepoint.
(TG)- What is the one piece of advice you would give a new hunter to aid him on his hunting ventures?
(Dano)- Have fun at it.

(Dano)- Whitetail

(Dano)- Friends and guy’s at work.

(TG)- What got you into making your own gear?
(Dano)- I have always been interested in woodwork, and crafts. It was just natural I guess for me to make my own gear.
(TG)- What do you consider your area of expertise as far as making stuff?
(Dano)- Don’t have one area yet.
(TG)- What is the one thing you would try to impress upon some one starting to make their gear?
(Dano)- Don’t be afraid to fail or make mistakes, they are all lessons learned.
(TG)- Who do you look up to the most as far as other who make their own gear?
(Dano)- I hate to name just one person, but Mickey Lotz is the man. I owe him a great deal.
