I shot a MOAB, a guy at a shoot let me shoot it.  It light my eyes up with its smoothness, and pointability.  I could not afford one at that time.  Fast forward 8 years was walking a blanket sale at cloverdale, a guy had a thundermag.  I snatched it up and love that bow.  Finally a few years ago came across a thunderstick III, snatched that up.  Love that bow, 60" 55#.  Usually not a R/D lover, but Jim's bows has something special.

The Bowyer's Bench / A Different Concept
« Last post by TDonald on Today at 07:10:16 PM »
Hi All!

I used to shoot recurve, many, many moons ago.  About 15 yrs ago I broke my back and had to switch to crossbow - yes, I know it's not a traditional bow, but hear me out before you delete my thread.  Please?

In those years, I've put new stocks on plenty of crossbows, carving them from maple, oak, poplar, or whatever was requested.  Lately I've started playing with an idea about combining the art and beauty of a tradbow with a crossbow.  What I think I'd like to do is use reverse limb technology with recurve limbs on a crossbow.  The frame would be slightly different because instead of using a rail, like most crossbows, it would have a whisker biscuit with a standard nock on the arrow to hold the string.

With all that in mind, can anyone help me figure out how to reach the draw weight I want to reach (200lbs) with a power stroke of 18" ?  The attached image is only the roughest of idea sketches, I hope it conveys the concept I'm reaching for.

If this post is completely not allowed, I would invite anyone willing to help me figure this one out to DM me.

Thanks

I do it all the time. If I can get a clean back I’ll try to make a bow from it. Twist, knots, cracks, doesn’t matter.

I treat my clothes with Permethrin and put a couple of drops, repeat a couple of drops of 100% deet on the inside of my wrist, rub together then on my neck, back of my hands, my face etc... Mosquitos nor any kind of bugs are a problem.

The Bowyer's Bench / Obsessed with a Stave

Have you ever had a stave that was meant for the wood shed, but you became bound and determined to try and make something out of it.  Working on one like that right now. I'm spending more time creating all kinds of jigs and cauls just to get it even close to the string tracking down the center. For some reason, there is something telling me there's a bow in there somewhere?

I bought a thermacell for dealing with the mosquitoes in the U.P. during the summer. I never expected it to work as well as it did, but I was very happy with it! I'm sure there's other options out there, but I've never had a reason to change.

Yep if that is spectraply you got to be generous with the glue. I have used 70 psi. From day one. 20 years building bows only 4 failures I know of that got out the door. I have done some dumb things and had failures that never got out the door tho

I always use too much glue, you can't put it in there later... :biglaugh:

For me, it's my first real investment traditional bow, a 58# Wes Wallace Mentor, aptly named after his mentor Jim Brackenbury.  I've had/have other recurves, long bows, and self bows, but that is my go-to.

That is a great idea Todd. I won't be able to contribute, anything since I have never shot one of Jim's bows, but I sure will enjoy reading all the posts.
