just talkin'
« on: November 07, 2020, 10:03:34 AM »
i am taking a break from bow building for a couple of reasons...  i was burnt out, i reached a good many of my goals, my body was suffering, (i would spend 8 to 12 hours a day building and testing bows which means a lot of standing with very little other movement so my hips, back and knee were causing me lots of pain)...
i have neglected my property which has three buildings and two sheds on it and they all need work...  i am committing myself to most of this winter to roofing, painting and misc. repairs until all is done...  at 59 these bones are starting to feel it and if i don't get it done now it's gonna get harder in the years to come...  since i stopped making bows a month ago i am already feeling a lot better...  i am having less pain and am gaining more flexibility and movement in my joints and my lower back, disc problem seems to be doing better also...
last week i dug a 220 feet long trench to get well water to another part of my property...  this week doing roof repairs on my garage to prep it for a new roof...  it will feel good when it is all done and i can coast for the next ten to fifteen years before anything major needs to be done...

the great part about all this is that i am all ready missing building bows again...  i am coming up with new ideas and entertaining the idea of going for all out speed and making a 35 pound flight bow...  maybe next time i will be more in balance and not spend so many hours standing that it does my body harm...

sometimes you need to take a vacation from the things you love...

Sound like a good plan Rich. It will be nice not to have all those projects lurking about.

+1. Self care is important and us men are often too block headed to step back and look after ourselves first.

So that will make you 74.  Speaking from that age point,  it's going to be challenging!  :biglaugh:

Rich, I own a home and 5 acres, always something to do.

After working a few hours on a project, I sit my ass down at our 1/4 acre pond or on the patio and see how many beers I can drink.

Seems to help, just sayen:)

Take care bro, things will come together..

at first i was over-whelmed when i looked at the list, but after i broke ground i am full steam ahead or should i say half steam ahead - it seems to take 8 hours to do what i use to get done in 4 or 5 hours and my 8 hour days of hard work are gone now too...   :biglaugh:  i just go with the flow... if i start getting fatigued i take a break...

i am looking forward to getting this roof done on my garage...  i stress every time a hurricane comes and wrap all my tools and important stuff in plastic inside my garage...  i was gonna go with a metal roof but i weighed it all out and decided to go with a torch down roof...  it is like a 3/12 pitch...

here is my beer drinking spot...

Got a fair idea where you are at Shred. I am just turning 73 and have a heap of work ahead of me clearing out thirty years of accumulated debris courtesy of a compulsive hoarder in my ex wife , so my house can be sold from under me.I also now have to stop building bows to devote myself to getting the house ready for sale , hoping to maximize sale price so I am left with something once everyone has picked over my bones.Life does throw a curve ball sometimes.

I lucked out and met a really nice girl 3 months after the wife left. So we had to buy the X out and we both had good jobs so we handled it nicely.
