Colene Simmons
« on: February 20, 2019, 08:49:26 AM »
I found out yesterday that Colene Simmons has passed away. Many of you probably knew Colene from many archery shoots she attended in the Eastern and Southeastern US with her 3 legged dog Jack(Tripod). Colene was a rough looking woman but she had a heart of gold. One of the most generous people I ever met. She was an excellent archer, owned a shoe repair shop in Tennessee, was a Marine fighter pilot and later an airline pilot until epilepsy ended her career.
If you knew Colene you laughed hard every time you saw her. She was funny, talented and as sweet and generous a person you've ever met. I only get to see Colene once or twice a year and will sadly miss her, her rough demeanor, her generosity and her rye, off color wit.
RIP my friend. Until we meet again.

Colene was a my friend and I feel a great loss, she was one of a kind and the most intellectually brilliant woman I ever met in spite of her humble nature. If you got her going she could quote great literary works of 14th and 15th century authors verbatim, her memory was incredible. She represented herself in two court cases because as she said" I know more about the law than the lawyers I spoke to", she won both.

Colene was a Marine cargo pilot during the Vietnam war, later a commercial pilot. One time I asked her if she ever saw a UFO while she was flying, her response was "oh yea" but she wouldn't elaborate.

She had a bit of blarney in her so occasionally she might exaggerate a story or two. She told me she had won great sums of money shooting international trap as well as shooting pool. I am pretty sure she won the national archery championship at Cloverdale several times but I don't know in what class.

Her generosity was legendary, she told me she kept several extra vehicles to loan or give to people in her neighborhood who were down on their luck and had lost theirs.

Colene was abandoned as a child and was raised in an orphanage in Ga and still excelled in life.

Here is Colene with a teardrop camper she made herself to travel to tournaments. Being an epileptic she wasn't supposed to drive but did so cautiously, she might take 8 hours to make a 3 hour trip, stopping to rest frequently to make sure she didn't have a seizure.

She was only 63 when she died.

At Twin Oaks Colene would arrive early in the week and start making bows. She would buy osage staves and crank out bows as fast as she could. When she finished one she would look around for someone who looked like they needed a bow, give it to them for free and get started on her next bow.

That was Colene's nature, completely selfless and generous.
