Stave/Video Give Away - and the Winner is...
« on: August 17, 2011, 04:24:00 PM »
I was just thinking the other day about how I had been planning to build a hickory selfbow for a friend's son. Well, that was about 8 years ago.. they have since moved away and he is no longer interested in archery.

I feel as though I have missed a chance with him - in my defense the last 8-10 years have been extremely trying for me and my family. The loss of several close relatives and my wife's on-going battle with epilepsy (not well controlled) as well as several other health problems have made an otherwise crazy life one in which many days are just spent trying to get by. Its' just not looking realistic for me to do what I had hoped with this stave.

I don't mention this as a way of looking for sympathy (everybody's got their troubles to deal with)- just the opposite - Trad Gang has given me something that is impossible to value highly enough and this is a way to hopefully get someone else involved in this great sport.

I have a well-seasoned (10 years in a controlled environment while laying flat) hickory stave that I have put in about 20 hours (I'm not real fast) of the initial roughing it out stage. Its' an excellent quality stave with some character (a knot in the lower limb) that I purchased from Murray Gaskins at Alternative Bow Woods back in 2000. It is 68" in overall length and the limbs have some nice backset to them, the stave has the back coated to prevent excessive drying or checking. It is 2" wide at the fades tapering to about 5/8" at the tips. The bow is about 1 1/4" thick at the fades and tapers out to 5/8" at the tips. The handle is currently 1 1/2" wide, a little under 2" thick and the roughed out shelf is 36" up from the bottom tip and 32" from the top tip. There's plenty of wood left after my initial roughing it out so that this stave could be made to suit a wide variety of draw weights and lengths. I have left quite a bit of wood all around the knot on the lower limb so it should be fairly easy to end up with a little character when the bow is done.

I would be willing to wrap this stave up, ship it (at my cost) anywhere in the Continental US - for free! The favor I would ask is that the person interested in it would use it as a way of getting someone else (doesn't have to be a kid - but that would be cool) interested in this wonderful sport that has given me so much over the last 40+ years. Or, if there is someone you know in need of a bow - but that cannot afford one, or any other similar circumstances - that would be great too.

I will also include a copy of Murray's video (VHS) on building a white wood bow.

I will leave this up through Sunday - if there is more than one person interested - I'll do a drawing early Monday (8/22) and post the results that day.

Terry

Here are a few pictures (not the best but you should get the idea).

Very generous of you!
I have taught several students through the process of self bow making and have more who want to learn.
I am always on the lookout for staves for them.
Thanks for adding me to the list.

Wow Terry!

Thanks, and thank your wife and that hat while you're at it.

Once we get to work on that thing, I'll try to get some pics up on the bowyer's bench.

In fact, I may need to borrow that hat to see which student gets this stave!

God bless you and thanks again!

Hey Gang!

We finally got that stave whittled down into a bow!
It took quite a while to arrange schedules with the young man who wanted to learn and make himself a selfbow, but last fall we got started and finished tillering late in the year. I sent him home to shoot it in and put a finish on it. Sorry we didn't get pictures while making it and I haven't even seen it with the stain and finish. He tells me it's a reddish-brown stain covered with a few coats of Tru-oil.  It finished out at 55lbs and shoots hard with just a bit of shock.

I'll get on him for some pictures so we can see it, but he's got himself a girl now and is a bit distracted!

I've been able to pass that video around a few times as well.

Thanks again TB! Together we were able to introduce another young man to bow making and traditional archery!
