ARROW 2016 thread
« on: July 12, 2016, 11:55:00 PM »
2nd weekend of Oct  (8 Oct)

Who is in?  I have my Father coming from NC to join us this year. I plan to get there early as usual if anyone would like to get a jump on the hunt.  I plan to set up camp on 5 Oct and be in a tree that afternoon.

My father can not use a climber anymore and will be hunting from the ground.  I hope I can set him up with a good hunt with a reasonable chance at success.  This will be his very 1st trad hunt.

I invited Caleb to travel back home with me to NC for a stingray hunt a few years ago.  When we were ready to head back to AR Caleb left that new bow he had made for the trip in Dad's spare bedroom as a gift.  Dad has been shooting it and says he will be ready by Oct.

My shoulder issue is a whole lot better.  I've been shooting 20 shots a day for about 2 weeks now.  My range is limited to around 15 yards  but I hope to extend that a few more yards.  If I can't I'll deal with the limitations.

I would like more information on this weekend. Is it open to anyone or is this a private hunt. I don't want to intrude on your family/friend hunt camp. I have seen the hunt notices posted in the past but was unsure. I guess all my other questions hinge on the answer to that question. Thanks.

ARROW is an annual hunt that is open to any trad shooter.  We stay at Crystal springs campground on lake Ouachita and hunt the National Forrest lands.

When I set up the very first ARROW hunt I didn't know any of the guys.  Now I have made some life long friends.  You might be a stranger when you show up for the first time but you will not be a stranger for very long.

I will try to make it. All of my buddies that I started with have quit hunting or passed away. My son is in Indiana for a year and I am solo for a change. As a pastor I do have to leave myself an out in case of unexpected ministry events. I would love to meet you guys.

I know any and all new folks will be welcomed.

Last year I visited a local church instead of driving back home for services.  I had someone teach my Sunday School class for me while I was away. I imagine I will do the same again this year.

I figured it was about time to start hashing out ARROW.  I've been chasing smoke with the Forest Service in Montana and the mountain west all summer so I've been a bit slack on the archery, but man have I caught some trout...
I'll head home at the end of August, do a couple weeks of army time at the end of September, have October drill on the first weekend of October, and so far as I know, pending family stuff, be free for the second weekend.  I quit my school job a few weeks back so maybe I can get there earlier or stay a little later.  Just couldn't handle the office anymore.  Certainly not after this summer.

I've been working on my shooting using my wife's bow that Caleb built for her.  It's 40# at my draw and man can I shoot that thing!

You guys wouldn't pick on me if I hunted with a bow that has "Charlie-poo" written on it would you?

Dave if you can't hunt please come on by for a visit.  And thanks for the offer on the freezer space. I know that sure helped me out when I shot that doe a couple years ago.

Have you noticed any difference in the numbers of deer in the area this year? I don't know if the cwd deal has affected the deer in that area or not.

Dave that is great to hear.

I found out that my Father can't make it the  weekend of the hunt but he will be here the following weekend.  That will be muzzle loader season so that's what we will hunt with.

Nothing has changed on my part.  I'll arrive at Crystal Springs the Weds before the hunt.

I made a new string a couple days ago.  I just about have it shot in.  I have to dodge rain but once in awhile I can step outside and get a few shots in.

The shoulder is feeling good & a little stronger.  I'm up to 20 shots before I have to stop shooting.  That is a lot better than the last few years when it was maybe 10 shots if I was lucky and I'm talking 10 shots a day.

Now I'm shooting an average of 15 shots, go inside for an hour or so then step back out for another 15.  I'm up to 75 shots a day as of yesterday.
