Hey Guys,
How many of you are using spray paint Vs. dip for your arrow caps on carbons?
I saw a youtube video on this and looked pretty legit!
I am in the process of giving up the wraps, and going to start splicing and cresting so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
I tried spray paint once, and they looked great. I got away from it because I found that they didn't stick very good, and I would lose a feather what seemed like too easily. I got away from wraps also, they seemed like more of a pain to me. They would come up a lot of the time right where they overlap for me,and I did prep them right. I just put it right on the carbon now,and they haven't come off yet.
I use Krylon Fusion and lightly sand and clean with acetone before spraying. It sticks well and holds up fantastic. Am still shooting arrows I made 4 years ago.

I think that is what the guy in the youtube video was using.
Spray paint just seems so much easier than dipping..
thanks for the info so far guys!
reddogge,
Do you think the Krylon Fusion would work well on Aluminum, or better yet FMJ's?
thank you.
I have been using rustoleum "painters touch 2x ultra cover" . seem to have held up well with me spraying minwax fast drying poly clear gloss spray, on them. I fine steel wool the area first. And clean with acetone. Then spray one light coat. Let that dry a day. I then spray another coat to even everything out. Let that dry a day. Then i crest with model paint. I then let that dry for at least 24 hrs, maybe longer. Then spray a couple coats of poly. Let those dry a day. Lol theeeeen you're ready to fletch up. I have had issue with Feathers fall off before with sprays etc. But using this method and this paint. I have not "yet" only been doing it for several months. But it makes a good looking arrow. Hope this helps
I only cap wood shafts......I spray on a sealer coat of clear Krylon, cap with plain old white primer from a can, then finish with a coat of Krylon clear. Looks good and there are no issues with feathers coming off.

Yes, I painted some autumn orange for my son's arrows and they held up just fine. I used plain old Krylon but did the sanding and prep first. Also mask your cap off so you don't get overspray. I put a ring of tape with a small paper towel skirt.
PS- After cresting I seal the whole cap area with a couple of coats of Wipe On Poly. Very Important step.
Thanks For posting guys!
Great info!
I agree with Shawn, I do my alluminums the same way and I've been using fletch tape for my feathers without any issues. I do a lot of stump shooting and letting everything dry really good before applying my feathers makes a difference.
I also have used the Rustolem 2X for outdoor furniture. It goes on like an enamel. I use waterbased poly over my crests and NPV glue for feathers.
Only complaint I have about spray is the mess and the waste. Seems like more paint goes into the air than on shafts. I only paint this way on carbons, I never could get them to dip. My days with paint for cap are numbered, I prefer cap wraps on my carbons and alum shafts.
I use oil based rustoleum in the can and wipe it on with a foam brush. No need for sealer and it is hard and tough. Can goes a long way too. Duco sticks great. 3 or 4 coats and sand between.

All the time...only way I cap now. I top coat with some varnish to protect the color and use fletching tape al Fletch Tite. No issues and when I want to change feathers I can use a de-fletching tool without hurting the arrow. I'll need to paint again but that's no big deal.

I have used spray paint with good success. Make sure you use good quality tape or the lines will be fuzzy. Otherwise no issues.
