if any of you are looking for a great hunting seat listen up, I have hunted with this seat for more than 20 yrs, it is very well built, light, absolutley quiet, and not that expensive. I NEVER go hunting without it. It's called the niff-t-seat. Last I checked they cost around $90, they will last forever. They are very comfortable, I have never had a problem with leg cramps or feet falling to sleep. The seat has 4 different seat heights so there it will fit most anyone. As I get older (60 now) I need all the help I can get to stay comfy!
I have used one for several years but have to say that I can't sit very long at a time without some serious discomfort. I still like it for the convenience and ease of carrying though.
I have a couple of them. Convenient and compact enough to carry in day pack. Great when glassing for long periods. Not comfortable enough for long blind sits.
I used one for several years, but retired it when I discovered the Ground Hunters Seat. Check it out on Big Jim's site.
I love my niff-t-seat and killed a bunch of critters from it. I didn't think they make it anymore though. I think it's more than comfortable to hunt with. Small compact easy to carry can set up against a blowdown, tree, rock, etc. The secret to comfort for me is finding the right angle from back drop to lean against. Man I've fell asleep in my nifty seat. Heck if I demanded total comfort I'd stay at home and set in my lazy boy and watch outlandish stupid hunting shows on TV. Or I could pack out my lazy boy and hunt from it. Tongue in cheek! lol
I use my Niff-t seat.
they still have a web-site niff-t-seat.com
Tried one out this fall, wish I ordered one long ago.Its the cats butt for the ground hunter. Can,t wait for turkeys this spring........OH YEAH.Strap it to your pack and go.Silent swivel, perfect height.
I've had one for several seasons now and would never be without one being a ground hunter.
Question for Nifty seat fans:
How do you get the "legs" apart after a sit?
I've had mine for many years. Bought it from the original old gent who started them. Made of steel.
I get the legs screwed together and into the base of the seat and after a sit, I cannot get them apart without pliers to grip legs and twist. I've tried delrin washers to keep the threads from seating too tightly...even lubed threads--nothing works.
I also find the "boys" go to sleep on me if I sit in that bicycle seat too long... but it's the bomb to plunk down between tree root V and nestle in. :)
Just after I assemble it and move, I've got these longer legs that are impossible to get apart and have to walk around sticking up outa my pack! :(
I keep big adjustable pliers in the truck to disassemble!
Doc Nock, I have the same issue. Sometimes I have to smack the seat against the ground on its side to break the threads loose so I can then take it apart. I will be interested in the comments of others on this as I am sure you and I aren't the only ones experiencing this. I have several different seats that I use from time to time but find the Nifty seat is the one I seem to keep going back to for the simplicity of it and its compact size.
I have one that I use a lot. I like the lite weight so I use it if I am planning on going in a long way. I usually have a foam thermal seat pad thing that I put on the Nif-T seat and it's more comfortable. I also made a wooden post out of an old hardwood rake handle. It's lighter than the steel and quieter, too.
David,
I like it, and Ron, I too carry a seat pad, still go numb...if I sit too long... I like how it can fit between roots where a 3-legged stool doesn't!
I'm curious about the light weight aspect...mine is all steel and anything but LIGHT but it's built "hell for stout!" I've got it all marked up having to use big water pump pliers to break it loose. I used to be able to tap it on a tree and get it loose, but the short and longer sticks together won't come apart without pliers!
Buddy had that, and left them hang...walked up thru woods that way. I was behind and saw the one leg finally work itself loose and fall on the forest floor. Picked it up and caught up to him.
That would suck. I sure do turn side to side sitting looking this way and that and perhaps that snubs it down too tightly?
Hardwood handle huh? You're clever Ron!
I never take mine apart, I have a hook attached to it, when I stand up I clip the seat to the back of my belt and forget it, it has never caused me a problem and its always there when I need it
DD,
Interesting! As related, my buddy couldn't get his apart and carried it thus together and it came apart and he'd have lost the one leg had I not been following along and saw it.
How do you keep it from smacking you in the back of the legs? When I put mine together, being fairly tall, I use both legs! That makes for a right long stick what would trip my bumbling self!
Mine sticks together as well, I leave it assembled and just lash it to the back of my pack. I prefer it over all my other seats except when there is nothing to lean back against.
I've purchased four. My son, brother and father all have one now. They're comfortable for about an hour for me.
I use mine mostly for still hunting. Mine stays assembled. I only use the longer section for the leg and it hangs from my belt. It does hit the back of my leg some, but not enough to bother me. I simply pull it more forward on my belt to get it off my leg.
Heavy? I'd guess mine only weighs about two pounds at the most.
If mine broke, I'd purchase another.
I hate to play devil's advocate but on a scale of 1 to 10 I'd give the Nifty-Seat a weak 5. I bought mine from L.L. Bean's back when they were around $30, quite a few years ago. Have tried to like it over the years but to be honest it's not a very comfortable seat for sits of more than about an hour. It has only one central leg so tends to be tippy unless you have a tree to lean on and both feet flat out front, and even then if you nod off you might be kissin' swamp sod when you wake up. With steel construction it's on the heavy side for a small 'portable' seat. It doesn't fold completely flat so will stick out some when carried. I stopped trying to wear mine on my belt after enduring the constant ping ping ping of brush hitting the bars on treks through anything but clear paths or tote roads. Though I still use it from time to time I much prefer a simple $6 Wal-Mart tripod stool I bought 10 years ago...it's half the weight, hard to tip over and carries quietly when slung over the shoulder with a strap. Aside from replacing the plastic seat (it finally wore out) that stool has been very useful and adequately comfortable for sits of 2 or 3 hours at a time. It doesn't rotate like a Nifty Seat but it's easy to slide to one knee when a shot opportunity comes up. And I haven't gone nose diving for toadstools with it yet, even though a quick nap has threatened to overcome my keen predatory instincts a time or two.
Guess it's true about hunting seats. too. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, lol.
I tipped over backwards on my nifty seat once while in my double bull blind. I knocked the whole blind over. :)
I stake down my double bull in front and then can lean on back wall without tipping.
I bought a ROLL-A-Chair for the blind...3 legs, flip up back rest, ultra light...just covered the aluminum legs with contact shelf paper in wood pattern and I'm good to go.
Nifty is nifty...for some situations. Hard to carry things for all occasions!
I've used mine for years and like it, true its not the best for long sits, but for most of my morning or evening hunts it works well. I never disassemble mine, I put a rope on it and carry it over my shoulder like a possibles pouch. It carries tight to my body without flapping around and is quick to set up. The way its built, I bet it lasts the rest of my days.
It's nifty !
