They work well. Just try to get the densest, tightest wrapped one you can get.

And like stated above, you will probably lose an arrow or two in it at some point!

If you are just picking a spot and shooting, you are less likely to bury an arrow if you shoot at the side of the bale versus one of the ends. I still usually shoot at the ends unless i know the bale is consuming arrows.  They make good targets but arrows can disappear into the soft spots.

I always wanted to walk thru a field full of them and just rove or stump/bail shoot. What a great time that would be with 3-4 guys.

Shot into a neighbor's once, had to nearly destroy the bale to retrieve my arrow. No more of that for me. I shoot my GTs into the ground (usually at leaves) and will never shoot into a round bale again.

Just my experience.

Have fun.

I use them all the time. Just shoot the side and not the end and you won't lose any arrows.

They work great.  If your bale is loose and your getting to much penetration use blunts.

X3, have always shot them since I was a youngster and still do. Have people over all the time to shot my bales and as said try not to shoot into the ends unless your at a angle and there super good bales.

They put my hay up every year and I replace mine every couple but they will last much longer. When there getting soft just roll the bale 1/4 turn or more and that will help a bunch.

I do that every year after the local farmer bales. I call it "mastadon hunting". It's pretty cool launching long range shots at them.

I just have to be careful not to shoot the ends  from up close. Don't want to be buying a cow after it chokes on an arrow.

I always use Round bales, but like Andy said make sure the baler is set real tight. I've shot a couple that were loose wrapped and they are trash, bot for lasting and shooting into. A good tight wrap are very good.

Whenever I see them in a field I think "targets" and want to do the same thing.

That's what I've used for the last 9 years. Replace at 1st cutting each summer. While the bales are still in the field they make great roaming targets. Shooting from all angles around one bale to the next approximates a lot of hunting shots. Shoot at the side wrap, not the ends and you won't lose arrows.

We always look forward to when they cut my hay, my sons, family and friends will all come out and shoot the bales in my field before they take them. We do have rules and no shooting in the ends, it's a lot of fun long shots are the favorite.

Sometimes we will set up 3d targets in the field for good hunting practice. I guess I need to take some picks this year so I have some to post.

Been shooting the same bale for 5 years now...make sure to shoot the sided or you will lost arrows like mentioned earlier, AND your bale won't last very long.

As you pull the arrows out of the ends you'll pull hay out with it and pretty soon your bale will start falling out.

Shoot the sides and they'll last for years.

One of the local clubs has been exclusively using the same double wrapped round bales on the practice range for 5 years. They over-whelming see conventional bow use and surprisingly have stood the test of time.

One caveat.............. be sure you have means and a place to dispose of them when the time comes! I had one placed in my yard once. When it began to come apart .............. "Holy Cow"! I never imagined how much hay is in one of those things!   :knothead:

Like others said, shoot the sides not the ends.

if you do use them I recommend only shooting at them at swine wrapped side...if you shoot at them from the flat side you'll have arrows go all the way in and lost

I have done the same as Redbeast.  It is fun to shoot at them roving around my field.  I don't know what distance I have shot at- maybe up to 80 yards or so.  Perhaps because of the distance I have not had problems getting the arrow out.

I shot one for years. I ended up shooting VPA small game heads into them. Arrows pull super easy and helps you pick a spot on game IMO.

X100,000,000 on shooting the side only.
