I wonder how many will remember this.
I am really glad Roy Rogers liked archery as he was one of my childhood heroes. The photos show he had good form.
There are few Hollywood mentors of integrity for young folks in our current day and time but Roy Rogers was for many a young boy back then.

Roy Rogers was my childhood hero. I knew he was a really good trap shooter, but was completely unaware of his archery interests. I still contribute every year to the Happy Trails foundation. He and Dale did a lot of benefits for kids and he was one of those Hollywood stars you never heard anything bad about.
Thanks for posting this.
Looks like he could come to full draw and anchor with his cowboy hat on without knocking it back with the string. I wish he were still around so he could show me how he did that!
I seem to recall reading that Don Johnson is an archery fan, as is Dickey Betts of the Allman Brothers.
Absolutely! And Johnny Carson too!
Throw out another name.....William Shatner.
Dickie has spent a bit of time in the pockie.... I would be conservative using him as a role model. Shatner has apparently long since turned his back on archery and bowhunting.
McDave, I ware a cowboy hat and shoot all the time. Have for years and for me it has never been a problem.

I recall a number of my movie heroes shooting the bow off camera. Guy Madison (Wild Bill Hickok), Rory Calhoun, Errol Flynn, Basil Rathbone, and even the "Terminator" Arnold Schwarzenegger are just a few.
Yes, it's sad to see that William Shatner went from hunting with Fred Bear to marching with PETA.
Enjoy!

I did know RR shot a stick bow. I do love watching RR shows, the movies and TV series.
"I'm a doctor, Jim. Not an archer!"

William Shatner is said to have been a very good archer and successful bowhunter.

But even better. Marilyn Monroe!

Now that's a unique armpit anchor :)
I believe Shatner "was" an avid bowhunter. I think he's reversed gears and is a complete anti now. But, to answer the threads question...as an old fogie, I do remember Roy Rogers enjoyed archery.
I seem to remember that Bing Crosby was quite an archer.
Thanks Louis, old Roy looks llike he has good form. He and Dale are still my heroes. That quiver looks interesting also.

Pretty cool stuff, made me reflect on the probability of there being more big game animals world wide now had there not been the marketing push back when for guns being the tool of choice. Those old picks of animals stacked high with smiling rifle holders.....I doubt they could've repeated those numbers chasing with stick and string.
I'm sort of an old fogie, but had never known about most of these actor-archers. Thanks for the thread.
Back in the day archery was extremely popular. Men like Howard Hill helped spread this interest in the "Hollywood crowd". Then sports like golf took hold and the masses found other ways to spend their leisure time. Ever wonder how "archery golf" came about?
I believe Roy Rogers---real name was
LEONARD SLYE .

I saw William Shatner shoot an Alaskan Brown bear years ago on "The American Sportsman" program narrated by Curt Gowdy. Killed it with only 1 arrow if I remember correctly.
