Title: Spotted Doe?
Post by: tomsm44 on November 02, 2015, 10:29:00 AM
I got pictures of this deer a few days back.  It's a full grown doe, I'd say 3+ years old, with a fawn.  The doe has a row of faint white spots down either side of her back.  Have any of you ever seen this before?

that is pretty cool!!! Never seen anything like that! almoost looks like it could be a hybrid between an axis and a whitetail.

I have seen it many times before.  I used to hunt a farm in southern Michigan and it was a fairly common thing on that farm.

I've heard of the whitetail/axis hybrids, but there aren't any exotics in my neck of the woods.  I noticed the fawn is decent sized and already pretty dark, but has the same spots remaining.  Most I've seen lose the spots on their hindquarters last.  I'm wondering if it may have picked up the trait from momma.  It'd be pretty cool if this trait were to become more prevalent around our lease.

I've seen that here in southern Michigan also. Especially on a farm in the Howell area.

If you kill her, have that hide tanned!

Pretty common where we hunt.   It is normally something we see on 1.5 year old deer.  A neat thing to see.

I have seen mule deer and elk with (very rarely) with large snow white splotches, looks like a paint horse.  Its called piebald, but I do not know if that is what you've got.  Great pictures.  Thanks for sharing.

It's very common where I hunt. I have seen mature bucks and does with them. It is usually two lines of spots down both sides of the spine.
