Title: Able to take my first shot at a deer
Post by: Bobtulowiecki on October 24, 2015, 12:20:00 PM
This morning I was able to release an arrow from my longbow at a deer for the first time.  It was a gorgeous morning, great conditions and had a nice mature 8pt come in on me grunting.  Stood up, took the shot. Everything looked good until he dropped at the last second and my arrow flew over him. Not even going to pretend like I laughed it off!  I have caught myself muttering random things out load and am fired up that I blew the opportunity.  Practice arrows were good before I got in the woods it just didn't work out for me when it needed to count. Thanks for allowing me to vent!

always shoot for the lower heart, and always keep a second arrow out of the quiver and ready.

I missed one the other afternoon too though,, now you broke the ice so forget and move on to the next one this is a lifetime committment.

That was my first shot too other than the deer never moved. I went about a foot over his back at about 8 yards. I know I looked up at that great rack as I released...Never saw him again

All I can say is that's bowhunting. Shake it off and get another shot and hope it goes better. I missed one this week too. Big doe though. On the bright side a miss is always better than a non lethal hit.

Knew it was in the cards that I would miss some deer switching to strictly traditional this fall.  Looking at it as a great encounter and an early season learning experience. Ready to get back in the saddle again tomorrow.

don't worry about it. If you hunt long enough you will get many opportunities to vent. But when you get the opportunities to cheer, all the previous "venting" will make the moment even sweeter.

Bob, I shot over 3 my first year switching from a compound. Im going to say this, I know you have heard it many times. It makes all the difference trust me. PICK A SPOT!! If you do not do this you will shoot over them I assure you. I started aiming at a little spot on critters and I started connecting. Hope this helps

Aim for the elbow!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, it happens!!! That's why I always try to pick a "low" spot...

I found that if I concentrate on that "little" spot right behind the corner of the elbow, Things just seem to work out well.

Keep after them!!!!!

I was hoping that today I would get a chance. I walked into the woods early before sunup and jumped one. When the sun had come up I was on a slope and siting in a natural blind on the ground. I had a doe come down the hill about 80 yards away. I tried to get her to come over with a grunt call, but couldn't. Was nice to see that though. Haven't seen much life in the woods the last few times, lots of tracks though.
