Hello everyone. I've spoken to the Tradgang Admin, and received their approval for this thread. Thank you Tradgang for your continued support.
This thread is about involvement.
Involvement in the sport that you spend your off-season prepping for. Involvement in fine tuning your gear to ensure a quick/humane kill. Involvement with your hunting partner (s), if you so choose to have one. Involvement in your own physical and mental preparation. And to me, the most important...Involvement in Bowhunting organizations that promote brotherhood, and love of all things bowhunting. A Fraternity if you so choose to call it.
This "Fraternity" I'm speaking of is the Professional Bowhunters Society (PBS).
The PBS has been around over 50 years promoting our favorite passtime. With this thread, I'm doing my part to spread the PBS "word", and hopefully recruit new members at the same time (more on that in a bit).
The PBS is made up of the most hardcore Bowhunters that exist, from around the world. We aren't for everyone, and we prefer it that way. We eat, sleep and train to bowhunt. Our mission statement is...
"It is the purpose of the Professional Bowhunters Society to be an organization whose membership consists only of persons who are considered Professional Bowhunters in ATTITUDE, and who vow:
That by choice, bowhunting is their primary archery interest, and their ultimate aim and interest is the taking of wild game by bow and arrow of suitable weights in a humane and sportsmanlike manner;
To share their experiences, knowledge and shooting skills;
To be a conscientious bowhunter, promoting bowhunting by working to elevate its standards and the standards of those who practice the art of bowhunting;
To provide training in safety, shooting and hunting techniques;
To practice the wise use of our natural resources, the conservation of our wild game and the preservation of our natural habitat."
As a first year member, you're probably wondering what you'll get. That is a pretty fair question. As a first year, Associate Member, you receive...
*A quarterly magazine, The Professional Bowhunter (containing how-to articles you will find printed nowhere else)
*Use of the PBS Information/Education Services
*Participation in PBS Programs
*The opportunity to defend the sport against anti-hunting forces
*Free use of the lending library, including videos and books
The PBS also has a Regional Program that was set up last year to promote the organization on a more "local" scale.
This Regional Program has spawned some amazing Membership ONLY hunts (yes, as an Associate Member, you may attend). This year alone, I know of: Texas hog hunts; Florida hog hunts; Florida alligator hunt; Utah elk hunt; Arizon Coues Deer/javalina hunt; Virginia deer, turkey and bear; Colorado elk hunt; Georgia Black Beard Island hunt; Tennessee Turkey hunt; Ohio deer hunt; Indiana deer hunt; New Hampshire bear hunt; New York State Catskill deer hunt; Kodiak Alaska blacktail deer hunt; my good friend, Richard Flett, has an open invitation to any PBS member that would like to hunt New Zealand; and the most recent addition is Gene Wensel setting up a hunt to Africa, and looking for participants to join him, just to name a few.
All those bowhunts are put on by PBS members, for PBS members. I told you, we live to Bowhunt.
As an added bonus for joining, I'm currently making a dozen of my Motor City Machete douglas fir arrows (60-65# spine, marble dipped crown with membrane spliced cock feather) to be given to one lucky NEW member that goes thru me to get their membership. Everyone who contacts me, and sends in their first year's dues payment will have their name placed into the "hat", and a winner will be drawn at 6 PM on December 1st, 2015.

My arrows, Motor City Machetes, cannot be bought, from me. I make literally dozens of dozen arrow sets yearly to be donated to Archery Organizations to be used to raise money AND awareness of their organization. The reason I do not sell my arrows is simple...I already have a job, and I hate working. If I do it for free, I enjoy what I do.
Now say you don't shoot full length 60-65# spine arrows. No problem, if you are the lucky winner, I will build you a custom set to your specifications, while using Surewood arrow shafts (my arrow wood of choice for hunting) as my main ingredient, the rest is totally up to you.

For those of you who've never seen them, Mike makes a really pretty arrow. I think he won almost all the categories of the amateur arrow making contest at the PBS banquet in Cincinnati, plus a few National contests!!
I already have taken off work for the banquet and the hog hunt.
I want to thank everyone of you who have commented here, sent me PM's, emails, texts and phone calls.
The PBS membership speaks for itself, and there are so many within Tradgang that belong with us. Thank you for all the support. You're going to wonder why you waited so long to join. I know I kick myself for not signing up sooner. My goal is to make sure nobody makes the same mistake that I did (yeah I said I made a mistake, but nobody better tell my wife I said it).
Since becoming a PBS member, I have had some amazing hunts that I have relived here on Tradgang for everyone else. DIY Goats in Hawaii; DIY Mule Deer in Wyoming; Bears in Manitoba; DIY Moose in Canada and I'm currently planning a DIY hunt for elk in 2016. I've always "thought" of all these hunts as things to dream about.
Becoming a PBS member has allowed me to not only realize these kinds of hunts are not just dreams, but EASILY done with the right mentors, and more importantly, AFFORDABLE (if done correctly) for a working stiff like me.
The PBS motto...Knowledge Through Experience...is exemplified within the membership.
Don't forget, Christmas is right around the corner (yeah, I know, it's coming WAY TO FAST), and a PBS membership, would be a Welcome gift to anyone who considers themselves a bowhunter.
Once again, Thank you everyone for the positive comments, and for Tradgang's continued support.

Mike made some good points in his last post. Joining PBS is a VERY good first step to making a lot of hunts a reality. That is IF you get involved and take advantage of the opportunities.The knowledge within PBS is astounding but like anything else you have to go after it and get involved.

Been on the GA Hog Hunt with Jeff for three years now....very demanding hunt, but also very rewarding hunt in game seen and people met. The time around campfires in our primitive camp...in boats going to and from drop off points on the islands...is time well spent getting to know fellow PBS'ers.

Thank you everyone for the kind words about the best bowhunting organization out there. I never went to college, but the "Fraternal" feel of being in the PBS is a kin to the Fraternal feel I have towards brothers who were in the military with me.
All the applications, and first year dues that came thru me (the only way to gain a chance at the arrows), have been sent in. Those of you who have already sent in your $, can expect a Welcome pack in the mail once your application is processed thru the Home Office.
If you're on the fence, now is the time to sign up. Don't just take my word for it, contact ANY PBS member, and question them. MANY have responded on this thread, and are very passionate about their chosen passtime.
Once again, Thank You all who have sent your first year's dues in to me. You will soon wonder why you waited so long to join.

Alright, back to the arrows...After a midnight run to West "By God" Virginia to drop off my Mother-in-Law. (My wife's 94 year old Grandma was out pulling flowers and weeds from her garden and fell, breaking her hip in the process. She's a tough one though, she went 91 years without running water. Just a quick note to all of you on the fence...One of our members was able to secure a 13,000 acre private ranch in Nebraska to hunt Pronghorn on, for the 2016 season, and at an extremely low cost per participant I might add. It was announced on Monday (on our Website) and as of last night, all slots were filled.
The only possible way anyone could have gotten in on this deal, was to be a dues paying PBS member, and be in the right place at the right time when the deals come thru. I missed out, but would have loved to have been involved.
You honestly never know what our members are working on, except you can expect it to be well thought out and planned by a dedicated PBS member.
If you want to hunt different animals, AND different places, this is the perfect opportunity to get off the fence, and get involved in the PBS by becoming a member.
You got that right Mike. In the morning I am headed to Kodiak island on a PBS members hunt. I know this hunt will be a winner.

Quick question, Is PBS trad only? Just curious because My wife may join as well.
Most PBS members shoot traditional equipment. That said, people shooting compound bows are welcome to join. We try to emphasize ethical bowhunting and embracing the challenges of bowhunting, leaving it to each member to decide how to do that.
Randy, John is correct. Most PBS members shoot traditional, but it is not about the equipment that is shot, it is more about the person doing the shooting. The bow is just an inadament object.
Greg and Joe, I know I don't need say this, BUT have fun and bring back lots of pictures.
If I had the vacation time available, I would have jumped on that one in a heartbeat when it was announced. You retired guys have all the fun.
No problem on the mint Joe. I will get that for you first thing after I sample a couple local brews and a plate of seafood.
Mike, you can bet that I will be taking alot of pictures. In a couple weeks there should be more than a few on the PBS cyber campfire page.

Posting these up for the Monday morning crowd. There is only one way to get a chance at these and time is dwindling down quickly.
With one leg on each side of the fence, it's impossible to go anywhere.
I'm hopeful to have them fletched by this weekend, but there are quite a few irons in the fire right now, so no guarantees. I'll keep you updated in the first post, just as I have been doing all along by updating the pictures of the process.

Just an update on the arrows...I've been so busy the past 2 weeks, I don't know how I've gotten anything done. I have set this weekend aside to get them fletched and ready for shipping.

This will be my last bump of the Membership Drive. As of right now, there is just under 4 hours left (payment must be received by midnight Eastern Time tonight, to be eligible for the arrows which will be drawn tomorrow at 6 PM Eastern Time), and your odds of winning are pretty darn good.
If you have been on the fence, tell your wife it will make an awesome Christmas gift. It's the gift that keeps on giving for an entire year, and more importantly, it will improve your hunting opportunities.

Congrats to the winner and welcome new PBS members. Wow Mike, this was the most effective membership drive I can remember! I expect to see some good threads on here this year with hunt results. I am hosting two hunts and hope to attend one or two other membership hunts in 2016.

Now, what I would like to do is: To donate back 11 of the arrows to the PBS for the Bi-annual gathering. I want one of those beauties for myself, to compare my arrow building skills to.
