Title: Making some 90-95's
Post by: LostNation_Larry on October 20, 2015, 08:28:00 PM
I had a customer ask if I could come make two dozen 90-95 spined cedar arrows.  I put him off for some time but I finally broke down and ordered 200 in the 85+ range from Rose City and after hand spining and weighing each shaft, I have enough for his two dozen and one more.  I'm also ready for the customer who wants two dozen in the 100+ category.

It is fun making arrows out of logs.

Just curious. What do they weigh?

For this two dozen I used 460-490 grains.  The unused ones are on both sides but most are 490-520 grains.  This customer shoots 200 grain points.

I have some 80-85 spine done up and if I remember they weight between 570gr to 590gr give or take. They are 29" or a little over with a 125gr point.

What's the finished length of the arrow?

I'm already shooting 80-85 w/ 125 grain heads.  Maybe I could use some logs?

The answer is yes, but...  Normally shafts come 32" so after you put a 3/4" taper on for the point you cannot have a 32" arrow.  Fortunately there we buy 33" shafts from on of our suppliers so if you need 11/32" then SOMETIMES we can get 33" shafts and you can make 32" arrows.  The second option is to foot your 32" shafts.  The Arrow Fix or Reparrow are two of the simpler footing methods.  You can aslo make two way or four way footings.  Footed shafts are quite a bit more work but they give you a way to make it happen.

Footed arrows will give you several inches more length.

Dang it! I was getting ready to order some but the length is too short!.
Larry makes great arrows. I got some cedar from him a few years ago and killed some deer with them. I don't often use wood anymore because it's hard to find length and spine.
One of these days I'll get into making footed shafts.

Tedd, we still have a fair number of 32" shafts in 80 and up.  What length do you need?
