Well guys, I shot myself a beauty yesterday. I had to work late at work so after work I decided to look for some groundhogs instead of deer hunting.
No sooner had I dressed up in my leafy ghillie when I spotted a hog. I started my stalk. I decided to circle around it and sneak in from behind.
As I rounded a blind corner I was startled to see a groundhog staring at me. It was standing over its hole while it had both eyes locked on me. Ever so slowly I drew back on it. I knew it would duck my arrow so I held low and let it rip.
At the shot the hog dropped as excepted, unfortunately for the hog it happened to drop right into my arrow!
The hog disappeared but I knew the shot was good. I walked up to find a bloody arrow and a empty hole. Disappointed, I grabbed my arrow and kept stalking the other groundhog.
I closed the stalk on the other groundhog only to whiff 2 shots at it under 15 yards. I saved it for another day I guess :biglaugh:
On my way out I decided to check the groundhog hole where I had hit the first hog. This time on a last bit of hope I decided to reach down into the hole.
I was more than surprised when I felt a foot down in the hole. After some wrestling I finally managed to get it out. It was than that I realized just how big this hog was.
There is no doubt this is the largest groundhog I have ever killed. The hog weighed 14.4 pounds and had a beautiful skin. I kept some good cuts of meat off the groundhog along with the skin and skull for my trophy room.
I used my 57# Super Kodiak with axis arrows and grizzly single bevels. The shot was around 16 yards and the shot was just a tad high, slicing the spine in half and killing the groundhog instantly as it fell down into its hole.
I am very proud of this groundhog and I hope to stick another one before they go into hibernation. They sure are fun to chase. Enjoy SS

Awesome!!!
Monster! I don't think any I have seen would top 5 pounds.
That is a HOG!
Holy Crap!
You are either really brave or really dumb to reach into a hog hole. My buddy does that too, but he's nuts.
Congratulations!
Hoggy Marmot,nice
Nice one!
Biggin! The only one I ever shot took my arrow with him down into his hole. I could hear him gnawing on the shaft. Never even THOUGHT about reachin' in after him!! They are fun to hunt.
That thing is a toad , Well done sir....
,,,Sam,,,
That's a beauty sir!
What a beast.
Very nice hog. Glad you got to save some meat. I'm surprised by folks who don't know how good they eat.
That is one BIG pig. Good for you. For anyone out there who has never hunted these critters, do yourself a favor and give it a go. They are super alert and a really small target. Something to hunt during the dog days of summer, if you don't mind the skeeters. Can really hone your stalking skills.
WE have one at the cabin that the wife named Wilson. Been there going on 4 years. He lives in an old shed .This spring Wilson found a mrs. and they had 3 younguns'.(I think an owl got the babies ) When there are acorns we take a couple handfuls, put 'em outside the shed, call his name and within 20 mins. Wilson is sitting by the pile picking one up and leaning back against the shed while he eats. Don't think I could shoot Ole Wilson.
Good night thats a big'un!
Well done.......
well done! thats a bigun
What a BEAST! Nice shooting
That's a serious critter! Nice job.
Wish I could chase them but apparently woodchucks are special to my wife's family, especially her grandma. If I shot one id be on the couch!! They're cool little buggers though! Congrats on a real trophy!!
Congratulations!
That's a dandy! I've got a big one near my best whitetail stand that has tempted me to get down and try a stalk.
Make sure to post some pics of how you display the hide.
What a beast wish we had em. Of coarse they are destructive too!
That is definitely a trophy pig. Thanks for sharing\\\\
God bless, Steve

NICE! I have shot my share of woodchucks with a long range rifle. However, this summer I got into stalking them with the longbow. What a RIOT!!
