Title: Functional Flint Heads by "Knife River" (Your Pic's are Wanted!)
Post by: Osagetree on October 14, 2007, 06:13:00 PM
As nice as Woody is, I thought it would be a nice thing for us to pay him a little tribute.

I need your help by posting pic's on this thread. In a small way we can let Woody know how big an impact his fine stone heads have made across the nation,,, and maybe other continents!

Besides I'm curious as to haw many heads of his has taken game of any size...

I find it fascinating!      :archer:

Even though I've not personally met Woody, I consider him a good friend not unlike the way my friendship started with Doug Campbell...cyber style!

I really admire and respect someone who can create a tool from raw materials...but Woody goes beyond that in the pure beauty of his artistry.  With that said, I love to put hand made tools of stone & steel to the ultimate test of harvesting game like all those early hunters had to do...Doc

Great idea for a thread, and a nice way to say thanks. I look forward to all of your pics of the animals, and the functional art used to harvest them.

OK, I'll play. I contacted Woody about a year and a half ago because I had purchased some heads on the St. Jude's auction, but was completely ignorant of what a good stone head looked and felt like. Woody was good enough to send me one of his "seconds" that was in his opinion sharp enough to hunt with, but wasn't up to his "standards", what ever the heck that meant. LOL Anyway, last year, opening day, I nocked up a self arrow with his head on it and ended up shooting this buck.

While I was thrilled to accomplish that feet, The head broke on a rib on the off side. Woody sent me another head without me asking (although I was ready to beg)  :) , so this year, opening morning, I had both heads with me. The new one hafted up on another self arrow, and the broken one from last year in my pack for luck. 9AM opening morning, this one and her girlfriends made the mistake of temping Woody's death stone, and she paid the price.

I can't say enough about the generosity of the people on this site, and Woody is at the top of the list!   :clapper:

And he is a good friend to shoot with, on a course or around a campfire. Kind and talented as he is, I think his son will turn out even better.  :p

Can I play, too?    ;)    This one passed through a hog (after the grasshopper bugged off).

And this one did, too.  Cut one rib half in two on the way in and completely severed another on the way out.  I can't find any damage on the point.  I kinda like these things.  GGG

Ok, you guys need to follow Woody's example and show some close-ups of those heads.  His work is art and needs up-close examination.  A before and after would be cool too.

I'd kinda like them too if my points were works of art...

This one hit the off shoulder and chipped the point.  But same results...another filled bear tag.

Do you guys practice with these points before hunting?  Just curious as to how you learn how they shoot without breaking them.

I shoot mine into a big styrofoam block.  I've also used McKenzie's without problem, but prefer the softer foams for easier removal.

Woody took a hog with the 3rd head from the left,,, then I shot a doe with the same head last year. The 5th head from the left is the one I used to take the buck with at the top of the page.

I have flint heads and have killed with flint heads but I don't have any of Woody's flint heads. Well I have one, but it was a gift from a friend from South Point, Ohio and ain't going on an arrow. It's in a frame of sorts. I do have a box of "potential" flint heads from Woody but have to learn how to turn them from raw rock into polished heads so it may be awhile before I can post any pictures   :bigsmyl:

Osagetree,  Now you done it...talking Woody Knives!  If you think his points are works of art, well then his stones knives are from another planet.  I traded Woody a steel knife for one of his flint knives.  He was kind enough to accept just one of my knives when it should have been at least a 1/2 dozen to make anywhere near an even swap...Doc

ps:  We need to get Ray to play on this too!
