I used my thermacell the first time other day hunting and the results were amazing. Where I had been driven crazy by no-see-ums and mosquitoes I had none around me all afternoon.
I did notice the thermacell had an audible hiss and wondered if any of you guys have had a deer clue in on the sound. Here in Alabama deer notice any small, unnatural sound and give you a wide birth. I didn't see any deer but it was my stand choice I am sure.

I am pretty sure they all hiss at first. Once ya use them for a while, they are almost silent. It also helps to have the fuel less than full while using it in the woods. They do work great, however I have never used mine for deer. I have heard of others with success though.

I don't notice the hiss but I have ringing in the ears anyways, so everything sounds like crickets.
Never had any deer issues with the thermacell making noise
-
I believe the hiss is probably like the noise that my old camcorder made. If I turned it on they caught the noise of the tape rolling even though it was slight.
If the camera was already rolling they did not pick it up.
Ditto on the ringing in your ears. I guess I have had it so long I thought everyones did that till my wife had problems and went to the doctor. I said you mean they did not ring before?

Eric, the hiss goes away (at least on mine) after a few uses.
-
Mine hissed at first too..then quieted down. The important thing to remember with the Thermacell is to keep them hissing-into-the-wind...
-
One more thing to remember is to keep the smoke from it out of your face. I didn't think of this one until after the headache started.
-
FWIW - I've had four (dropped/lost one, still have three) never had one "Hiss" on me. Usually set them under my seat (in climber, and on ground) and have never had a headache from it - so far (hope I don't - LOL). Been lucky this year, even with the heat, I've only had to use one 3 or 4 times - but one is always with me!
-
I have to hold it near my ear to hear the hiss but I have found Bamma deer can hear the slight ticking of a watch at a distance.
-
Eric: Relax...the deer will think its bugs! Really, my wife and I use them on deer and bear hunts and they do not bother the animals at all. If they can hear the thermacell you will never get an arrow drawn back...but we both know you can pull that off.

Eric, I noticed the hiss on mine last year. Sat evening I left mine at home and got eaten up. Yesterday I used it and had a yearling right under me for 20 minutes. I never heard the hiss, maybe it has gone away on mine. I did'nt have any trouble with deer hearing mine last year.
-
I have deer pick up on my shakey breathing and pounding heartbeat but I haven't had any problems with the thermacell. ;)
-
The hiss is just the gas. Probabally not noticeable, it is nice to not get ate up by the skeeters though. i went hunting this morning, forgot mine. After an hour sitting on the ground, no stand yet, I had to move a little. Really wish I could have found mine this morning, got a little more aquinted with the woods though. Thermacells are sweet!

Eric, as someone stated, try using a half used fuel cell. We use it on our deck in the mini lanterns, and I use the "half bottles" in the stand. Maybe it'll help?

Not to hijack the thread but when you are using the thermacell do you or are you breathing the repellent gas? Is it just me or does that seem bad?
