I just bought a used Martin Savannah Stealth for $300.  I should have bought a reflex deflex longbow years ago.

Not sure what poundage or what hand you shoot but I have a longbow for $400 in the classifieds that's never been shot.

There are some bows available at that price new with no frills wood.....but are still good quality bows. ....check the sponsors for new and used.....migh take a bit of looking but they are there.

But to narrow it down, look at mad dog bows. His prairie predator is a phenomenal bow

Brian hit the nail on the head. Mad dog Prairie Predator is a sweet little shooter. I love mine.

Now I will add that I am in the same boat as you as well. I am also looking for a new R/D longbow after having my Mad Dog for awhile now.

...I'll see you in the classifieds.

As Bisch said, you can buy a great used bow for $400. A fellow tradgangers sold me a beautiful Howard Hill cheetah takedown with an ostrich grip for $400. Be patient and you'll find a great deal in the classifieds. Good luck.

I am not really sure what I prefer as I have never shot a long bow. I will say I want a one piece. around the 50# @ 28 mark. I draw to 27". RH. R/D I did see those prairie predators, they are sweet looking. I have some time to search because I am not in a position at the moment to buy one so I will keep researching. PS, I also like that Lil Creep...

What length you looking for?  Mike McCready has one called the Prairie Predator for like $225, but it's a mid sized bow.  Only goes up to I think 60" or 62" and has a smaller riser.  It's really aimed at women and older youth, but a lot of guys on here have them and love them.  I wouldn't mind having one around 58" myself.  His full size, I think it's called the Mountaineer, is just a little over $400, maybe $425-$450.  Check him out:  Mad Dog Archery.

I keep hearing a bunch about that bow...Im only 5'6 150# myself so a shorter bow is fine

Wait....so I can get a brand new Prairie Predator custom made to length and # and shipped for under 300$ ??? I can't buy a factory Bear Montana from Bass Pro or 3 rivers for that! what is the deal with these bows? Why such a good price on what seems to be a quality bow?

I don't know of any tradgang sponsor who doesn't make quality bows.  Also look up a omega imperial.  It is under $400 and is a great bow, just ask Dalton Lewis(husky archer, i think)

Getting ready to post a Hitman double carbon r/d.  More of a recurve type grip.  It'd be 58# at your draw though.  $250

Mike Mecredy at Maddog Archery will build you a custom bow at your specs for under 300. I paid 274 for my 60" prairie predator. It got to my doorstep for under 300 ! Great little shooter. I prefer a longer bow though. If it was available in a 62" model, I'd order another one

On the Mad Dogs, the base price is for a fairly plain, but still nice bow, but you could upgrade to a nicer bow and still keep it affordable.  My understanding of the reason for the price differences between different brands is the finish work.  A high end bow may be hand sanded to 100 grit or higher before the finish is applied.  Makes for an absolutely beautiful, but somewhat unnecessary finish.  The ones like Mad Dog are usually sanded to maybe 220 grit or so.  Still makes a great looking bow, but not as shiney as the high end ones.  Because of the time involved in the high end finishes, you pay a lot for a relatively small difference that has no impact on performance.  I have another brand bow that is finished along the same lines.  Not super shiney, but still pretty fancy as far as wood choices go and good looking.  It's a full size and around $450-$500, so about the same price range as the Mad Dog Mountaineer.

I believe he started with a recurve last year, the disease is beginning to emrge. Enjoy the affliction.

Coming from a recurve a r/d would be a good first transition then later an asl.
