Title: Ladder stand modifications (Anyone remember Roger Rothhaar's modification?)
Post by: kiamichi kid on September 29, 2015, 04:55:00 PM
I just hung a 2 man ladder stand for my father and I to share a hunt later on in the year. The thought occurred to me that the spot would be an excellent early season bowhunting spot and so I am planning on giving it a go in the near future. However, the stand is not very high and is really somewhat open. I have good cover behind me but I am wide open in the front. Does anyone know of any ladder stand modifications that help with this issue?

I remember some time ago reading a Traditional Bowhunter magazine article over Roger Rothhaar. In the article it showed a modification he made to one of his ladder stands. It appeared that he placed strips of camo, braced by wire,  around his stand They were vertically spaced by about a 8"-12" apart and wrapped all the way around him. they really did a great job of breaking up his outline. Would anyone by chance have a copy of that issue lying around or have another ladder stand mod that they think might be helpful?

Oak branches hold their leaves well and work pretty good.  As long as you have good cover behind you and move very slowly or not at all you shouldn't get busted.

I just put branches through the ladder bars and on the top on the sides,This has worked well on the double ladder stands.using them for my grandson who is 13 now and has a 1/2 dozen deer to his credit,

Camo burlap hung from the "shooting rail" works real well. Available at many stores.

I appreciate the replies. I thought about the burlap but I need to remove the shooting rail as it is too close to me to shoot a longbow.

If you can find an old artificial Christmas tree, you can use the branches and some pvc to dress things up a bit!

That's a great suggestion, Bisch. I'll have to check the attic when I get home.

A couple of ideas from past threads...

One from Jon...

and from Jon again & Roger's son, Ryan Rothhaar on page 5...

Hunt safe.
