Ok to preface this, I ruptured (snapped) my lower bicep tendon, it's been surgically repaired and doc says I won't shoot a bow for 1 1/2 years or more. To say I'm gutted is an understatement.
So I've been thinking if crossbows but I've also been thinking about simply shooting my longbow off my feet. Has anyone here done this in a serious way? I'm thinking of putting straps on to hold it onto my feet but wondering if a release is a good idea. Perhaps this post will be deleted because it's not "traditional" but it's still my longbow and regular arrows.
Any ideas sure would be welcome
Maybe I should mention that I'm right handed and that's the arm that's messed up. My left arm although my weaker side is in " regular" condition.
I have not seen anybody shoot with feet but you may consider using your teeth and a mouth tab. I think Terry G. shot this way for a while. I know a guy who uses this method cuz he is missing an arm. He is a good shot too. A new challenge for you...good luck.
Can you shoot lefty using both arms??
Masters of the bare bow Volume 1, Ron Laclair is using his feet
I recall Bob Thompson...the guy who originated Zipper Bows...breaking his arm or wrist many years ago. If memory serves me correctly, Bob built himself a bow specifically to shoot off his foot. He was successful and killed a deer or two that season.
I think I heard Byron Ferguson once used one of his feet to take a deer, due to the awkward position he was in to get a shot. It can be done with practice.
Bud, I can't use my right arm for anything so shooting left etc. is out.
I searched and searched the net to find some sort of homemade string release and didn't find much. I'm thinking to use a longer cord to pull the string back unti I can get m y left hand on the string and continue the draw but use a release as I think it will hrlp me to shoot in out of position shots.
Thanks for the ideas so far
I would concentrate on the mouth tab idea! You should not need your right arm for that.
Good luck with your recovery. Your malady is one of my biggest fears in life; that of not being able to shoot my bow!!!

And go as lightweight as legal to hunt, if even that is light enough.
left handed using teeth might also be a choice. have seen this.
This is one of the reasons for using a crossbow. Use it till you are healed and come on back ( slowly), instead of maybe hurting yourself more.

could build a nice primitive crossbow- would help to capture some of the "bow charm"
i have been giving your predicament some thought, girlie chef, since you did your self in.
this is what i came up with- a nice medieval type stock and trigger mech.- seen some great ones on the web( and build a longs too).
and then i could build you a short glass recurve( i have a 48 incher- ahem... bow that is :D
the glass recurve will give you that ability to leave it strung / drawn for longer periods- as apposed to a wooden bow.
you build the stock
i will build the prod for ya!
oh yea---and man up poofda!
There was a kid in my school who lost and arm in a firearm accident. Yet, he killed a deer by strapping a bow to his foot and pulling with his hand. He needed some help getting this apparatus set up, but it did work.

He can't use his right arm, so this would not be feasible!

Come on, Kirk!!! One of his arms are messed up, so he can't stand on his hands!!! And, although I have never met or seen him, I bet he would not look too good in that little silver outfit either!
On a serious note, I really hope you figure out a way to keep shooting!

Um...don't think I'm that flexible ;)
I got some bungee cords and strapped my ACS to both feet. Then using a right handed shooting tab backwards on my left hand I flung a few arrows. At 10 yards I'm minute of moose and they will be started into the rut by the middle of the week.
I'll head out and practice a few more this evening. One thing I can hold at full draw indefinitely usung my legs. And I'll be down low so the Moose won't take notice of me. Arrow flight surchanges shooting like this but keeping shots to 15 yards should work. I'll go to the shooting range and practice on the big target butts and things will get better fast.
Sure hope I don't get moose stomped :)
I am right handed shooter and I have shot holding the bow in my left hand and using a string tab pulling the bow with my teeth.
It takes some work but certainly is doable.
I had to shorten up my shooting distances.
God bless,Mudd
Ron LaClair did the very thing your asking about. Broke his arm before season and learned to shoot holding the bow with his feet...got pretty good at it too!
I would try anything before settling on an X-gun!
Good luck to you buddy!
i dunno- i seen cheffie is some pretty riske' outfits- even looked damn sexy in a few
Fuji, I look sexy in anything. You won't be laughing when I'm eating moose steaks next week :)
I sure hope this works. I would love to see the pics and stories after you shoot a moose while holding the bow with your feet. I would assume you are going to find a place to set up for them. In my mind it would be pretty difficult to be moving/stalking, and then get into position to get a shot off???

Have friend over towards Lolo we call Lefty because he lost his right arm from the shoulder down in a logging accident. He shoots a 45-55# Bear recurve and has killed a lot more elk than I have. He has a piece of leather that wraps around his string with a piece of cordage sewn into the end. He draws with his left hand while holding the tab with his teeth. Out to about 20 yards he is really accurate. I will just say I am a better shot than most, and it's tough to out score him while shooting 3D's. If you have the desire, you will find a way to getter done. I like your attitude and enthusiasm, good luck.
