I posted this last year and it's time to start a new season.
Yee ha! Just 3 more days 'till early archery season in the northern zone. Then both north and south regular archery open a week later. Good luck to everyone and please hunt safe. Wear a harness if you climb a tree for you and your family's sake. We'll be out Sunday morning in the Moose River Plains in the Adirondacks. Who else will be out hunting? And remember to please share some pics of your hunts.
I'll be out Saturday at my property in Norway. Have hunted last 2 evenings. Saw some deer and a nice big fisher last night. Working today & tomorrow then hunting Saturday again for bear. Working Sunday & Monday then finally after deer Tuesday. Be safe & enjoy the woods.
Not sure if I will get out this season, but to all who do best of luck. Stay calm, pick a spot and all that practice will pay off!
good luck guys
heading for harrisville tomorrow afternoon... can't wait and to make it even better i just got a call from dave @ schafer silvertip bows!! :jumper:
Good luck to all you NY bowhunters. I will be making my trip up near the end of Oct, although this year I may try to slip in an earlier weekend.
Shick
I killed my first buck with a bow in Chautauqua county NY where I was raised. Good luck to all!
Looking forward to being in the WNY woods with the longbow in hand for the first time. Hope everyone has a great and safe season
Good luck to all!
Good luck everyone. It will be at least 3 weeks before I am back in the state and able to hunt.
Good luck everyone,be safe and enjoy yourselves out there!!!
Good Luck Fellas...meet back here with your success stories..Be safe and have a great time!
Good luck guys. I grew up in the south believing northerners and southerners didn't mix and always dreamed of going hunting out west. After getting into trad, finding TG, and meeting some of you guys online, I now dream of coming up to the north east for a couple months and and chasing New England white tails, squirrels, and bunnies with some of you.
:campfire:
i'll be high on a beech ridge on my favorite mountain! good luck all!
Yup, It's that time again. I always enjoy reading the NY thread and though I've never met most of you guys that post on here, I find myself rooting for you and enjoying your success stories. I'll be following this daily. Good luck to all.
Good Luck, My Brothers!!!!!!!!!!
So much to do still before opening day ... Gotta hang two stands, set some blinds. Not to mention actually choose a bow off the rack to hunt with, and get some final practice in!
Good luck to everyone, I'll be rooting for you from my stand in 4S, or the farm in 6S.
Cheers!
had a big black bear at 50 yards, saw a coyote and flock of turkeys but no deer.
Carbon flyer, let us see the TIP when you get it...a very special day when it comes in. I found mine very easy to set up. Get a FF string from 10 Ring Strings and I put on Two Tracks Scallops silencers and feather rest from TRAP, you will be pleased.
Wish i was there to share the woods again with some of you.
Good luck to all, post them pics
Hey Kevin,
We had great weather again in the Moose River Plains. We missed ya at the camp fire! Keep us posted how you're doing out west.
Went out scouting today found some rubs and acouple scrapes on a ridge.Anybody finding any rubs yet??
I've found lots of rubs and scrapes. A few huge ones, but since in Westchester this year we can't take a buck for the first 15 days I'm looking for areas with the least buck sign. I have a great Apple tree picked out for opening afternoon. 7-10 does hitting it most every evening. I just hope it's not raining too hard.
Finding more rubs this year than the last two. Even hitting a couple mock scrapes I put in over the seasons. Just need to show during shooting hours!
Wow Crotch Horn. You must spend a fortune commuting to and from your hunting site. :bigsmyl:
I've enjoyed sharing our hunts in the " Good Luck NY Bowhunters " threads the last couple of years and look forward to it again this year. I do most of my bowhunting in unit 8G which is doe only the first 2 weeks this year so I will probably wait to do any serious hunting and not risk pushing out the good bucks on the small parcels I hunt.
I'll miss opening weekend since I'll be visiting friends in VT with my wife. I'll be doing some pheasant hunting though. Next weekend I'll be trying for a nice fat doe since that's all we can shoot on Long island the first two weeks. I just know a nice buck is going to walk by.
Actually highlow I spend much more traveling back & forth to work. 64.6 mile drive each way 4 days a week. Got stuck working today. Will be out tomorrow. Hope the rain stops. Good luck guys. Can't wait to gear about critters hitting the ground!!!
Good luck to all you fellas. Looks to be plenty of deer out there for the taking.
Still not feeling it yet myself. October 1st opener is great but takes some getting used to, its just not seasonable yet.
I sure wish I could be out there with you guys, however the deer have vanished from the farm. I assume its a change in food but it sure takes the wind out of my sails. I cant hunt for a week or more anyhow so I will be living vicariously through you guys.
Good luck, guys!!!
Bisch
Gonna try and get out tomorrow after work.Goodluck,fellas.
Good luck Jeff and everyone else who goes out tomorrow. Hopefully the does cooperate and we prove the DEC wrong since they do not expect enough does to be killed in their 2 week doe only season for most of the state.
It is my beleif, they do not want us to kill enough does to initiate a muzzle loader season in our bow season next year. If you get a chance to take a doe, please do so.
I'll be leaving in 3 and a half hours. Can't wait. It's like Christmas morning when I was 6. I worked till 2 so there is no way I'm sleeping. Good luck everybody.
Truck is packed. Only thing in the way is work! Getting out this evening. Good luck guys
Sitting in court, yayyyyyy!
first report , there is nothing to report , no deer this A.M.
Same here, nothing but squirrels. Be out again this evening.
Nice and quiet this morning with wet ground so I still hunted near home for the first hour and a half. Had a doe with fawn get to within 25yds but its too soon for me to be shooting either one.Was looking at a ladder stand I left out last year and had two little forkie bucks sneak up on me and spook when they saw me move. Its fun being out but not being able to shoot a good buck if I see one is taking something out of it for me.
I will be in the Adirondacks tomorrow still - hunting..have a new area with a lot of sign. Perhaps a Buck will make the fatal mistake of getting too close...
Pretty breezy for me this morn, bumped 3 does on my way out but, it felt great to be at it again.
2 hours til I'm in the woods.

Good luck Buddy. We need more ribs for next September!
Yikes,,,, if you're relying on me to feed us we may starve to death!
Stoneknife has a story to share. Looks like you may be the first Jim.
Had this nice doe come into 20 yards first thing this morning. Complete pass through with a GT5575 and a Bear razorhead no insert out of my 46# Bob Lee.

Congrats Joe! You are a killing machine. Way to put meat on the table. I let a yearling walk this morning. I need a bigger deer to keep all my college kids fed! :)
Waiting Jim..... (That boy's played this game before, LOL!!!)
Oops!!!!! Sorry Jim!!! (You post, faster than I can type!)

I'll be out saturday and sunday in NY.
Congrats Jim.

Nice way to start the season................
Congrats!
Way to go! Here at work hoping for more hero pics. I'll be at it Saturday. Good luck to all & keep em coming.
Congrats Jim. What do you think happened to me? A good looking 4 point strolling past me in unit 4J where its doe only til the 15th!!! I totally expected to see a bigger buck that I couldn't shoot but he did fine to make me feel sorry for myself. The season is long, hopefully we meet again.
Well done Jim.......
Congrats Jim. :clapper: I saw a 5 point and a doe tonight. Both just out of range. It sure does feel good getting out there again.
Congratulations Jim; Good looking doe.
Shick
Very nice, Jim! thumbsup:
Congrats Jim gorgeous deer. Had a doe with twin fawns come through at 15. Was good practice getting the longbow up for the first time and begin to draw on a deer. Pumped to get back out and attempt to get my first deer with traditional equipment
congrats Jim
Jim you amaze me, I would have bet money that you would put the first deer on the ground, great job.
No deer sightings last night, except for the drive out. Heading out again in about half hour. Hopefully they will be moving near me. Really nice morning. Good luck everyone.
Working for a few days straight and fall baseball in between. You fellas get after them and good luck.
Joe's car broke down at collage looks like no hunting today have to go get it.
Nice job Jim!! Tomorrow morning will be my opener. Good luck guys!!
Good luck my fellow NYrs!
Three just out of range this morning. Try again tomorrow.
Congrats to you!
Congrats...will be out for the first time in the morning
Nada this morning... Still looking for the 6 pointer, they say is hanging around.....
Headed out west tomorrow. You guys need to keep this updated so I can keep tabs.
Good luck.
 Way to go Jim
Up in the Catskills this morning wind and rain!! Nothing came by. Lots of good sign though!!
Had a good hunt last evening afterwork.Had 2 does and a 4 pointer come in to my setup but no shot. Good to see them though. They stayed around for about 10 min. and up over the ridge they went. Not bad for the first time out and a for a short hunt.Still was pumped................
Just came in from a late morning/early afternoon still hunt. Wow, what a rush!!! I glassed 3 does feeding about 130 yards in a small clear cut. I angled toward them. Wind was with me at first. I slowly moved from tree to tree until it became too open for me to safely move. The wind started to go all over and suddenly the jig was up. I glassed another doe and a slipper. Got to with in 25 yrds but no shot. Again, that crazy wind was all over, but what a rush!!
Went out this morning and the only deer that I was a 8 pointer that was 2-3 inches wider than his ears. Had a broad side to an ever so slightly quartering to me shot at less than twenty yards and guess what happened ? If you guessed that I'm in one of the areas that is doe only for the first two weeks you would be right. To make matters worse after he winded me and left I put a blunt right were he was standing ,made me feel better knowing that I could have made the shot.
:scared: oh no!! That's why I'm in the Catskills right now and not in westchester!!
Its in certain parts of the Catskills too Sean B..lol
I was out today..just a doe and a fawn..raining all morning too. Still better than work
Just came back in had a doe and bbutton buck come in, I passed on both. I watched a grouse strut is stuff. I saw Alot of grouse today while still hunting during my midday hunt. I had about a dozen flushes, I'm certain that it was atkear 8 different birds.
Did,nt hunt this morning but went out this afternoon. No movement was a crazy windy day.Pretty thick and green yet.Need a good frost to knock things down.Did see a doe in the field behind the house at dusk. Will try again in the morning, hopefully it will be less windy.
First thing this morning I had a pretty red fox chasing chippers at 20 yards. A little later I spyed movement headed my way soon I saw a nice doe and yearling bearing down on me, the momma stopped at 18 yards and the wind swirreled, she froze. I waited and waited but finally my mind said screw it try and draw about the time my hand was reaching my face she spun and left.
A little while latter I was sitting on my new torges seat when BAM one of my knotes pulled through and I fell to the earth lol. I was fixing my seat when again movement. I looked up in time to see two nice bucks go running by. That was weird. Soon I figured out why. For an hour I heard crashing and banging so I snuck over to find a guy with his dog cleaning a tree from the creek bed. I watched him for a while when he looked up. He must have speed me cause he grabbed his dog and left leaving his coat hanging from a tree limb. Must have been scary seeing a fat guy in a guillie suit watching you.
This afternoon I was sneaking through the woods when I spotted a bedded deer. I started my stalk at about 80 yards soon I closed the gap to 30 that's when I spotted his horns. Where I hunt a buck must have three points on one side. I crept closer. At 18 yards I could see he was a forky on one side and a spike on the other RATS!!! I sat and watched him for awhile while he stretched and cleaned himself and then rubbed a tree. After he moseyed off I moved on. Later that evening while walking a bowl I had a doe and fawn pop up at 12 yards. They looked right through me but appeared agitated just then my arrow fell off the string. They worked their way around me and when I looked back guess who was chasing them? The little three point from earlier hahaha no wonder they where agitated. What a great day!!! Love my guillie suit and new torges seat this should be a fun year I really wanna do it from the ground.
I took this doe this morning in NYS. 44# 54" hi-speed, surewood shafts, ace standard. complete pass through, she went 30 yard after the shot and rolled down a steep hill. (http://i.imgur.com/XoiPZgp.jpg)

Well done 2nocks......... :notworthy:
How's the knee, Ron...?
Good job 2Nocks and the successful hunters.
I'm taking my bow for walks this year but not really hunting - but don't feel sorry for me! I have five lambs, 15 chickens, five turkeys and a quarter of a young Angus bull in the freezers.
Just don't need the meat!
Be safe out there guys - and enjoy the NY woods.
I set up for s quick afternoon hunt on an 8 acre property down the road. I have a few stands at the back of the property but the 2 fruit trees in the front are loaded with apples and pears. I found 2 heavy trails coming out of the woods towards them. I quickly used my pole saw to trim a few lanes and slipped up the tree with my climber. Around 6, two does came from the other side of the field to hit the apples. A few minutes later, the lead doe headed my way and tried to pass 10 yards behind my tree. She paused and my arrow was gone. I made a perfect shot and watched her pile up in less than 3 seconds.

Nice job gentlemen
Good shooting guys and keep the stories and pics coming!
I haven't been out since opening our weekend in the Moose River Plains with Ray and Izzy. Between work and building a cement block wall at home I haven't been out. Maybe over Columbus Day week end I can get in the woods.
Congratulations to you guys!!
Congrats to you guys!
Nice shooting guys.
congrats Greg and 2 nocks. Good shooting.
Wow guys way to start the year off!! Congrats to both of you
Congratulations fellas!
way to go guys , congrats
Congrats to you guys. Monday will be my first time out. Good luck to all.
Will be heading out for the afternoon sit.
Good shooting guys, congratulations. Good luck to anyone headed out there.
Good shooting guys, congratulations. Good luck to anyone headed out there.
That's the way to start off the season :clapper:
This morning was my second time out. All was quiet until a little after 9am when 3 mature doe and a yearling followed by a young spike came trotting out of the wood line to my right. They angled behind me and stayed there feeding on acorns for a good 15 minutes before walking off. No shots offered but they definitely got my heart pumping.
Where I am they have abandoned the oaks for the apples, which are heavy in some spots, absent in others. No apparent reason (I am sure mother nature has a reason) for the spotty availability of the fruit.
Way to go guys. Keep it coming!
Nice work fellas...can't wait to get out again
Sounds like a good start for some . I haven't made it yet as I have been in Quebec moose hunting but look forward to getting soon . Keep em coming ......
Got out this weekend public land was a little busy!! Sat morn i saw 5+ people by 10 o'clock. I had a doe come in Sunday. She came in spooky and of course I knew I should have aimed a little low but when it came time I just picked a spot. You guessed it she jumped the string. At least it was a clean miss. Only the first weekend so I hope I get a redemption shot. Good luck out there.
Keep the updates coming. I'll be back in NY in a week.
Congrats to all the success so far.
Tough Break Matt. Hopefully my little oasis on that property hasn't been found by the mobs you speak of.
passed on some small ones sunday night
Figured I just might get lucky and hunted at mid day. Nothing but rodents and peace, appreciated both. I sat a new stand next to a creek hoping they might be drinking at mid day but nothing. My other 3 stands are up in the beech and oak and a quick check has me excited. There is a small spring next to one stand and its tore up.
Going out in the morning to give it another try.Have a nice big 6 pointer bedded in the field behind my house as I tell this........pumped-up.
I sat a stand for s few hours after work, saw a lot of sign, but it was still warm and a TON of acorns dropping!!
I tried an afternoon sit yesterday. Saw nothing but squirrels until near dark. On the walk out, I saw two deer run across the trail about 70 yards in front of me. Too dark to see if they had horns, but they are there.
Good luck and watch out for rule changes from the DEC they seem to be switching a lot of staple rules lately. For example this year Westchester 3S is doe only for the first two weeks. That a first and it wasn't heavily advertised anywhere but the fine print. Don't do what many have done and just assume its the same as its always been. Same with dutchess 3G last year DMP permits became doe only again only in the fine print. I've heard a lot of guys getting busted for making an innocent mistake.
Shot another doe this afternoon. Saw a small buck out of range.
Nice job stone knife!
I was out the other day and had three 1.5 year olds come by. A 6 and two 4's
Beautiful morning this morning. All I saw were 2 coopers Hawks and a small Racoon. TONS of acorns dropping. Deer don't have far to look for food.
Two blade did it's job yesterday.

Excellent Jim!!!!! U must be tired from all that dragging!!! :bigsmyl:
:readit:
Going to try it on the ground tonight with the Big Jim ground seat.
Congratulations Again, Jim!!!!!
Good Luck, tonight!!!!!
way to go jim
Had two nice does come in tonight while I was on the ground had one at about 25 paces she jumped the string on me. No harm no foul.
You are a deer slaying machine Jim, if I was a deer that lived near you I'd be very afraid.
Got out Saturday and had a doe and yearling pass by at about 35 yards on my morning sit. For the evening I went to may stand that is close to a bedding area that is dropping white oak acorns like crazy. Around 5:00pm saw a deer emerge from the laurels and start feeding heading my way. Couldn't tell it was a nice buck until he fed closer. Sure enough he was a nice 8pt with two drop tine kickers and passed by me at 20 yards. Then he circled around a bit and probably caught a whiff since he looked up and spotted me in my stand. He backed off and went the other way. On Long Island bucks aren't legal until the 15th this year.
I haven't ben out much. Having lots of 1.5 year old 4'sand 6's play around me. Does haven't offered me a shot. I'm glad I havent seen any shooter bucks. That hurts.
Ive been getting used and abused with no time to hunt. Wednesday will change that and then a whole week straight of hunting coming up fast.
Congrats to those who have made meat. Those pesky deer are out there for sure.
Have not been able to get into the woods yet. Was sick on opening day and then working every day since , except for one day visiting family. Self-employed so have to take the work when it's offered. I keep trying to schedule clients for early in the morning or late in the afternoon but can't always be that lucky. I'm holding out for a couple of hours tomorrow afternoon.
ronp, hope you made it out over the Columbus weekend.
Congratulations Jim.
Bad news- I haven't seen a buck. Good news- I can't shoot him until after the 15th.
Kat i think it is a good thing that you haven't seen a buck. Sure would suck to watch a nic big 10 pointer walk by and not be able to fling an arrow at him!! I haven't seen a deer since opening weekend. This weekend with the cold temp should be good.
Good shooting Jim! :clapper:
I was able to get out for a couple hours yesterday. Spent too much time already working on my house.
I had a doe and her fawn come in, about 35 yards away. They were feeding on beech nuts as they disappeared into thick underbrush. It was good to get back in the woods, if just for a few hours.
Good Grief Jim, You are on a roll. Congrats.
Good luck this week Izzy.
I plan on being out Saturday. Its nice to know I will not have to pass what may be the only shot opportunity I may get this year if a spike walks in.
If the forecast is correct and we get rain Saturday, I may just hang a stand instead. Sunday will find me hunting. I have to go to a wedding Saturday night and will be tired Sunday but I will be where I want to be in the morning.
Good luck charlie! I hope you get to drag one through the leaves.
I'm hoping to get out after work tonight.
Good job boys!
The woods were alive this morning. On my way home but will have pics later. :shaka:
Oh boy!!!! :campfire:
:readit:
Yesterday I got a lot of heavy things out of the way including a gritty court case that was wearing on me and the fact that Ive only been out for two short sits had me feeling good. As I was preparing my gear for todays hunt I felt true excitement, like a kid the eve before opening day.
Just a 1/4 mile from home I saw a coyote cross the road and I wondered if it would be an omen of good things to come. Saw some deer on the way and anticipation was building. As soon as I got to the farm, a very big doe crossed the road toward the bottom of the property and on the walk in to my stand I saw two more deer in my flashlight beam that I got pretty close to before I saw them. I reversed course and took an alternate route and every few steps I look back at the deer and they didn't spook.
Getting to my stand well before light I got situated and before long I could hear deer behind me eating acorns and beech. It was still too dark to see with most of the trees still leafed out. As it started getting light, I started turning slowly and while my head was pivoting I caught a flicker of white coming toward me from the hemlocks toward the other deer.
I started walking from my front to back on my left side and was looking right in the area I heard the others feeding. It looked to be calm and my wind was right so I started looking for an opening. I found a tiny one and at 30 yards decided to shoot while it was walking undisturbed. Unfortunately It stopped at about the time I released and my lead was too much. Next thing I knew the deer cartwheeled and was lying still on the ground.
I thought I hit it in the head but got out of the tree to see what happened. My arrow hit it at the base of the neck, right where it joins the torso. Another arrow to the heart and it was dead, quickly.
Number 2 for the Silver Tip. Its no giant buck but Im thrilled with it as I am with any deer I kill. I still have unlimited antlerless tags and a trip to big buck country coming up soon. Im looking forward to the rest of the season.

 Allright Izzy!!
Nice Bud!! Congrats!! I love the old school camo limbs on that Tip!!
congrats Izzy
Great Job Izzy, my old 'Tip is treating you well. Congrats!
CONGRATULATIONS, Izzy!!!!!!!!!! :bigsmyl:
  congrats Izzy
Things slowed down last weekend but I was able to let an arrow fly! Had a grouse come in on me- the first one I have seen on this property I have hunted for the past 5 years. Gorgeous bird, fanned out. Missed him twice by an inch. Was great to get some practice shooting from a stand. Hoping this cold front gets the deer moving. Good luck to all
Congrats Izzy!
Great job Izzy.
Several close calls here but no arrows flung yet. Hunting all day friday.
Congrats to you izzy! Great hunt!
Congrats Izzy all you guys are doing great congrats guys!!!
Congrats to you izzy! Great hunt!
Close...but no backstraps.
Got out this afternoon for a couple of hours. Sat in a new ground blind that I built this summer, about 750 yards from my back door. Unfortunately for me, I didn't make it quite big enough to draw comfortably and easily.
Had a nice doe broadside at 20 feet right before sundown. She busted me when I shifted slightly to draw. Looks like that particular blind is done until gun season.
But at least I know that the location is prime. Will be fixing the blind this summer with a bow in hand so I will know that I can draw properly. Looks like I move on to one of the other blinds I prepped this summer.
Congrats Izzy! Out of curiosity, Where is this "big Buck country" you speak of? Good luck on your trip!
I will definitely be hunting Saturday. The area I am forced to hunt has been basically void of deer since nuts have been dropping however one saunters by once every two weeks. The plus side is fall turkey opens and I know where they roost. The abundance of fishers have the gray squirrels non existent but I figure if things are slow I can set a tree stand for when the acorns are dried up.
There are Oaks where I will be headed so here's hoping a deer may be sucking them up and I know there are a few apple trees on the neighbors property close by so hopefully I can get a crack at something.
I will be donning my Gillie suit from the ground. I have not been in these woods since summer but its the only place I can get a ride to.
Excellent job my friend :clapper:
congratulations Izzy!
Well done
The spike will eat well.......
Way to start the season Izzy.........GOOD VITTLES !!!
Nice shooting Buddy! Congrats and thanks for sharing the hunt. :clapper: :clapper: :clapper:
Awesome Izzy!! Congrats on the deer.
Awesome Izzy
Congrats izzy,
Nice deer and nicer bow!
Good for you Izzy and have great and safe trip Dan
Good job Izzy!
I spent all day yesterday still hunting one of my favorite spots. I saw one 8 point and a doe. Very little sign. Plenty of apples, acorns, corn fields, but the deer weren't there. It was a great day to still hunt anyway.
Hunted on the beech ridge this morning,no movement at all.Was sleeting for awhile real nasty. Then the sun cameout,so I stuck around for another hour but no movement.Going to try the apple orchard blind this evening.
Saw two 1.5 year old bucks and five does this morning. With the temp at 32 degrees and a nice north east breeze it felt like November except lots of leaves still on . Maybe tommorrow it will feel like November to one of the big guys .......
Just got a text from the Catskills, there are tales to be told! :readit: :saywhat:
Thanks Izzy, we missed you out there. Terry and I had a lot of fun. I'm going to start another thread with the whole story. Let's just say I got lucky and there's a few lessons with this doe. I saw 6 doe this morning, including this one, and a BEAUTIFUL 8 this evening.
(http://i1225.photobucket.com/albums/ee393/seanb45/9600A2AE-D677-4209-8AA2-6AB059A4134F_zpslxnrwf6o.jpg) (http://s1225.photobucket.com/user/seanb45/media/9600A2AE-D677-4209-8AA2-6AB059A4134F_zpslxnrwf6o.jpg.html)
Had my 14th hunt today and finally saw my first deer of the year from my hunting spot, actually it was 7 does in a row, 20 plus turkeys,1 grouse. Seems like boom or bust this year.
Glad you had some action Gerald, good luck buddy!
Nice doe Sean!
Sean, good for you. Good looking doe and BW.

Congrats again Shawn, she's a beauty!
Nice shooting Sean.
I was in the woods during my shift today and they are tore up with scrapes! I'm getting back out Tuesday, can't wait to try and fill some doe tags.
I was going to get out down here this morning but I didn't get to bed til late last night.
Congratualtions Sean
Congrats Sean
Got a buck tonight.I'll try to post a pic. tomorrow.

Thanks Drew.Just want to say congrats to everyone else who's taken a deer so far...Jim,Izzy,Sean etc.My computer has been acting up the last couple days so I haven't been on.Good hunting everyone and let's hear those stories!
Can't wait to see your buck and hear the story Jeff. I'm sure it's a good one.
Looking forward to hearing the story Jeff, congratulations.
Congrats Sean!
Congrats Jeff! Looking forward to the pictures and story.
My buddy shot a Magnum Doe with a Damon Howatt he picked up a week ago. wish he would hang here more often to share.
I saw 6 deer Saturday in the wind. the first one winded me as the wind had changed and she too a trail i was hoping she wouldn't. then the other three were spooked from somewhere else and came running through. With the wind swirling so bad, I decided to leave early and set up a stand elsewhere. I saw 2 more on the way out just prancing around ina CRP field.
Congrats Izzy, Sean and Jeff!!
I've been seeing deer every morning that I've been out. been side-lined since Friday with the flu so keep them stories and pics coming.
Congrats guys!
Congrats to the guys that scored so far!
I was out on Saturday and had a spike under me and than a little 4 pointer at 15 yards. a little while later I had a doe coming in and got busted by some wind swirling. She didn't stop blowing for a 1/2 hour. lol
In the evening I had basket rack 8 come right by me. What a great day. We can basically shoot unlimited does on LI so I'm going to hold out for them for meat and try to get this big 8pt I have on camera.
Haven't been on in a while. Congrats again Jim!!! Congrats also to Sean, Jeff & Izzy if I have it right. No luck here but that can change quickly. Keep it coming guys.
Congrats to everyone who has had success. I never saw a deer today. I'm really struggling this year. I keep telling myself that it's early and things will start picking up soon. I have never seen so few deer.
Congratulations Jeff  I did fill another doe tag on Sat. waiting on a buck now.
Congrats again Jim. Things are getting crazy here. Lotsa deer getting hit on the roads and making scrapes in the woods.
And yet another NY deer! This was killed by Dennis Sciccitano "Shick" from PA on a recent NY hunt. Beautiful doe and bow. (http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o244/2crazyboys_photos/IMG_0409.jpg) (http://s122.photobucket.com/user/2crazyboys_photos/media/IMG_0409.jpg.html)
Congrats again Shick!
Hey Shick, nice job, congrats!!!!!
Nice deer Shick :archer:
Nice deer Shick..................
Thanks guys. I was hunting just a little south of Bath. My buddy Tim wanted me to bring a Bear takedown up since he was going to be using his A mag. Thought about the mag, but decided to take the '70B along for the trip. The bow did what is was made to do. I look forward to NY every year. Good luck to all.

Sunday night the wind was right for a spot I hadn't hunted in at least a week.On the walk in I jumped a red fox that hopped up on a log at 20 yards or so.This started a stare off that lasted a couple minutes and when I finally moved,it did also a couple yards. This went on several times until he moved down the hill toward the way I was going and finally it had enough and ran off.
I made my way to a tree that was on an evening travel route between a bedding area and the stream and fields below.About a half hour before dark 3 does and 2 fawns came by just out of range so all I could do was sit and wait.About 20 minutes later,I heard movement and a minute later a buck stepped through the stonewall and after a couple minutes of him nosing around for acorns he offered me a 10yd. shot. The hit looked good and as he bolted up the hill he staggered to the right and went down.He hadn't gone 40 yds. and was dead in seconds.
I stood there a moment to take it all in,and thought about the red fox.It was as if we had a understanding between and us and a respect that only predators can have for each other...Or maybe I'm just a 'nut' spending to much time by myself in the woods.HA! :D
Great Jeff, congrats!! I've been waiting for your pics and story. Great buck!!
Nice looking buck.....congrats sir.
Well done fellas!
great buck Jeff
congrats Sean and Shick
Jeff, good for you. Very nice buck. I like your ASAT suit.

Nice buck Jim!
Nice buck Jeff!
Nice buck Jeff, congratulations.
Congrats to all!!!!
Nice buck Jeff, congrats!
Way to go guys!! Just love that picture Shick
Great work guys. My coaching commitments are winding down, played it cool with my time away from the family up until this point and the Bills do not play at home for the next couple weeks! Ready to put the petal to the metal. Each time out I feel as though I am getting closer to the first one. NY is a beautiful place in the Fall and I feel fortunate to experience with a longbow in hand. Good luck guys
Skunked today. Not a deer to be seen, heard one but none to be seen. One possum and a billion squirrels. Didn't have my killer instinct with me so I left the squirrels alone. Hunted from my Niff Tee seat 0645 to 1030.
Congratulations Jeff and all those who have scored.
Yeah.. Jeff.. Nice Buck Brother.. Congrats.. You don't look angry.. Your just bald.. That makes you look angry.. Good shootin...
Sean's story of bowhunting the Catskills got my juices flowing. I've been hunting small plots, clost to farm fields and houses. But, after reading his story, I had to hit the "big woods." What a wonder the big woods work on the soul. ... Had a spike spend most the morning sleeping within 22 yards of me, and I couldn't be happier. Congrats on a great buck!!
Anyone hunting this weekend?
I'll be out.
I will be going out in the morning. Also have next week off from work.Hope things will start to heat up..................
Saw a super fresh scrape tonight lets hope they stay moving!!
I will be out both mornings Izzy. My sightings have been few and far between. Things change in a minute. Good luck out there .
Heading out in a few minutes to try my luck at Stewart forest for the first time.
I slept in this morning but when I did get my butt out of bed it was 28 degrees. Some of you guys must have had a cool few hours today as the sun rose........just as it should be. Maybe it will get the deer moving......good luck and pick a spot. :campfire: :coffee:
It was a beautiful morning. First spot I was going to had cars lined up the road, a few I recognize from last year.
Second spot is one of my favorite places.. that is Was.... They have mowed all the brush the deer like to hide in when the pressure heats up on public land. All the other stand sites I had scouted last winter are also completely mowed.
went to a place I had turkey hunted before and saw decent sign, set up, it was already light. saw a few squirrels. at 9:30 had a father and son come in looking for a deer the kid shot at the night before. they said another guy shot a 140" 10 point in there the weekend before. I was out of the woods by 10. No deer seen.

Charlie, I thought you knew about that clearing. I guess butterflies need a home too. They say all of the locust that they are cutting are invasive so they're trying to restore it to resemble its original habitat.
Theres still plenty there, just look for whats left as far as cover goes. I see them every morning that I work the Pine Bush zone.
Beautiful sun rise this morning. Nothing showed
I saw two small bucks crossing the road on the way to my spot this morning I tried to warn the guy coming the other way but he still managed to hit the second one. I was going to pick him up but he got back to his feet and took off no broken legs so maybe he will make it. While on stand I had a doe with twin button bucks eating acorns around me after a while momma hit my trail coming in and looked up at me she walked away and came back six times trying get me to move but I didn't. She finally gave up and lead the little guys away .
Had a good hunt this morning.Got a late start.Got in my groundblind around 7:30.Once settled in and things quieted down,I gave a couple flips of the can call.About ten minutes later a buck appeared about 40 yrds.Watched him looking for the call maker. He started down the trail I was watching and decided to go back the way he came.So I sat there another hour then moved to a new spot.
Was,nt there 5 min. and a doe came running down this ridge, then another a few minutes later.Around 10:30 a couple of does came sneaking down behind me.They never knew I was there. Finally they worked there way towards me.Had a perfect chance at a big doe quartering away at 8yrds but the other one was behind her a ways and looking in my direction.Oh well that's hunting. Also had a chance to draw on a coyote but
he seen me first and took off full bore. The wind changed to the south east so I sneaked out of there. Will try that spot in the morning if the wind is right. Was sprayed down with deer dander and I know it helped.............A Owl was hooting up the next ridge over,Great morning !!!!!!!!
Sounds like a good morning Tim. Im off to a baseball game but Ill be wishing you all luck.
Excellent day yesterday. Had a doe come in at 5 in the afternoon but the best laid plans can get screwed up if one doesn't pay attention to detail. I was sure I was brushed in perfectly but she managed to see enough of me to be concerned. So she turns back the way she came and moseyed off to where she could keep an eye on me while she ate. I played cat and mouse with her as she did the head bob routine for a few minutes until a nice spike comes along and walks straight in front of me at about 15 yards or so. I want to draw on him but she is still watching me intently so I feel have to wait. Last thing I want is for her to blow out of there as I'm releasing an arrow and I make a bad hit on this guy. This goes on for 5 minutes until he wanders off totally oblivious to how close he came to being tonights dinner. She is still there and now seems somewhat more relaxed finally putting her head behind some brush long enough for me to try and move a couple of steps to my right for a shot. I took one step and her head whipped back to look at me as though she had been poked in the butt with a hot branding iron. I froze mid stride to try and salvage the situation but she trotted off before I could recover. Frustrating for sure but still a far better day than being at the office.
So round one goes to the deer...We rematch on Tuesday
Had a great afternoon hunt...I set up where I saw the 8 pt from last weekend. He came through about 6-605 last weekend. So I sat and enjoyed the Catskills deep in thought. 605 came, and I here a deer walking right toward me. I was already set up, and I'm looking through the branches and I see the deer coming like it read the script. Then I look at its head, it's not the 8, it's a fat doe. She stops broadside at 8 yards with her head down. I passed. I was still excited but I was after that 8. I have 2 doe permits for back home so I let her walk. I just love being that close to deer.
It sounds like everyone is seeing deer, that's good.
Izzy, I knew about the clearing and burning going on but they had been avoiding my oasis for the last year, I guess it's number was up.
I know the deer are still around, plenty of sign. I just need to regroup and find another place until the brush grows back.
My wife has made plans for 10 am for us, so I will brave the rain and try some town property several miles from my home.
Wet and windy this morning. Nothing this morning. I'm going to try to get out a few times after work this week before the clocks go back.
A beast hit the dirt this morning. :shaka:
:campfire: :coffee:
This oughta be good!
It has been very slow around here. I've not had a deer in range from a treestand since Oct. 1st. Except for the one shown below. He came in right at sunset and was moving along with purpose. He hit my shooting lane, I bleated, he stopped, I released. He went very far for a double lung. My kids at college in Utah love venison and always take a suitcase full back with them when they visit. We are going out for my 2nd grandson's blessing in a couple weeks and want to take a couple suitcases full for them. When I saw the huge body on this guy, I knew he could fill a couple.
I bought a new TimberHawk takedown longbow at Denton Hill and it performed perfectly and pushed the Snuffer completely through the thick body.

Dang Terry, did you ever weigh him? When I got the text, I thought it was an Indiana buck. He is way cool, he's gotta be older than 3 1/2.
That's one COOL looking buck!! Congrats buddy!!

Nice buck,Terry, and bow too.Good for you!
Nice one Terry! Ha into the suitcase with you!
Great Buck Terry, The body on him is huge and has a big old long nose!
Great shot too!
Congrats Terry!
It was quiet where I hunted this morning. just a few squirrels and chipmunks. seemed like it took forever for it to get light out.
And yet another big one went down yesterday. Bucks look to be picking up the pace. Hopefully hear a story when the work is done. :campfire:
Nice job terry. Congrats
Way to go Terry! Congrats on a great buck!

Looking forward to this...
at the horse farm, the number of animals that walked in front of my camera last week over the week before has quadrupled plus some. Granted all at night but the activity level is sure picking up.
Nice buck Terry.
Got out Saturday again. I hunted a new stand on public ground that is about 15 acres. It is separated by a road to a bigger property that a lot of people hunt. There is a nice funnel created by some houses deer fence and some thick stuff. Around 8:00am I have a six point come feeding through on the trail and I hear another deer behind him. Another six point comes through and he has big forks and brow tines like the buck I got last year but smaller. I let him pass and they catch up to each other and feed together. The typical six point feeds back to me and I'm thinking this deer must want to commit suicide since he must be getting at least a whiff of me. I let him pass again waiting for a doe or bigger buck. That was it for the great morning that started off with a screech owl landing on a branch three feet away from me. It turned its head and looked at me while I thought "welcome fellow hunter."
For the evening I went to another spot and a stand that I hadn't hunted before. Around 4:00pm a spike fed by. At 4:30pm a doe busted me getting my wind at about 40 yards. Then had another spike chase a bunch of does away that were headed my way until this big old doe chased him away. The old doe never gave me a shot but I was please never the less since she didn't pick me up in my stand. It is in a good spot but the trees are all small so I wedged this stand among some branches and it seems to have worked. At dark while I was just about to get down I heard a deer coming, he was a buck with a big body but I could only see a flash of antler in the dark. All in all a great day.
Got out all day sat saw a ton of movement including a nice buck. Snuck back in there Sunday afternoon and the buck visited me again. I will give the full story and pics later when I have a little time.
Finally got out after being sick for a week. Had a small spike around 7:20 this morning eating acorns within 15 yards but let the little guy walk. Saw 3 doe sneaking along the edge of a swampy area but they never came close enough to offer a shot. It felt good to be back out.
Wow you guys are really doing great this year congrats to all!!! And may I also add I love that the New Yorkers thread is constantly being added to, the traditional camaraderie here is just awesome
Matt, I like the sounds of what I am hearing. Looking forward to the update, I might get antsy and text you lol.
Tyler's still playing Football..... :readit:
Tyler actualy said to me last week, "Dad, I'm getting tired of Football... I just want to go Huntin'!!!!!"
Nice deer Terry !
Beautiful buck Terry. Congratulations
Congratulations Terry. I'm heading out after work I have not been in the stand in over a week.
That sure is a Handsome Buck, Terry!!!!!
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!! :clapper:
Went out this morning and no movement at all.Got busted last night by a big boss doe for the second time.Got back around 12:30 and was looking for my quiver and guess where I left it...........................In my ground blind, now I will have to hunt that spot this evening because its a hall getting there.I guess that's what happens when you put a camo quiver on the ground.................
Saw 7 this morning, a med size doe was 3steps from getting killed , she was only at 5 yards but screened by hemlock branches. Going to sit the same stand tonight
Ok I have some time but I am on my phone so I don't know about uploading pics just yet. If it doesn't work I will upload them at a later date.
This weekend went from seeing nothing to seeing everything. Sat morning I picked a new spot that I haven't hunted in a few years due to sign. I wasn't even in my treestand set up (climber) and I was hearing footsteps. I thought good sign but bad sign as my bow was still on the ground. The deer was so close I could hear it pee in the leaves! I froze and for the next 5 min the deer milled around my treestand at about 10 yards. Finally it decided to walk off by not before going right past me. I thought I could make out antlers but it was still dark and I wasn't sure. As they moved off I got ready. Just as light was breaking I heard steps behind me again and two doe were making there way in. Both good size I decided if they gave me a shot one would hopefully go home with me. Then I saw another deer behind them and it was a buck. He was following them about 100 feet back not pushing them but making his presence known. Trailing him was another buck but I couldn't make out any points. The does walked in and with the buck trailing I was going to let them walk by and hope for a shot at the buck. The does cooperated! My heart started racing the buck was coming in 30 yards 20 yards. At 15 yards I had and opening he just started into it and he hopped right through it like he knew what was going on. Stopped right behind some brush and just stood there looking around. He started walking again I needed 2 more step for a clear shot. Right at the brush line he stops turns 90 degrees and walks straight away giving me no shot. Son of a BLEEP. I had to just watch him walk the other buck never came in and the does were gone. I saw another doe and 2 fawn that morning. I was coming back in the afternoon!!
On my way in in the afternoon I found this. Promising. I snuck my way in and changed stand location due to the wind. I had thick stuff to my left and a few oaks to my right. As I sat there I was looking around and I figured this was a perfect bedding area. Not even a half hour into the site I see movement and a buck appears, walks out and goes straight away from me. No ID On him, 15 minutes later I see a deer coming back I figured it was him but nope it was the buck from the morning!!! He was coming straight at me. He got to 50 yards and hung a left into the thick stuff. He was just eating his way along and in no rush. As he circled me he laid down 60 yards out. Now the waiting game starts. 20-30 minutes later I see two doe coming out of the thick stuff. The buck stood up and followed them right off. I tried the bleat can and grunt and nothing stopped him. He knew were he wanted to go. I saw one more little button buck that night but didn't take any shots.
Sunday comes around I get up and it is raining. Back to bed I go. I decided I wasn't going to go sit in the rain for an hour get cold and have to get down. I wanted to stay. I had the afternoon and I knew I could sneak back in being it just rained and the leaves would make for quite walking. I was in and set up by 200. I sat swaying back and forth all afternoon second guessing my decision to hunt this area because the wind was blowing all over the place. I stuck it out without High hopes but putilting my time in. At 530 I don't know what made me turn around but I did and OH NO a deer snuck in and is 25 yards off to my right. I slowly get up get ready. It's the buck again he is eating some browse not really worried or spooked. He walks out and stands at about 23 yards spins 180 degrees and looks like he is going to walk back out the way he came. I find a shooting lane and get ready. He walks in and stops right leg forward perfect shot. I pull back anchor and let her fly. Deer jumps one huge hop and stands there looking around I MISSED. Enter all explitives here. I can't believe it he didn't go anywhere he just went back to eating. Now the is quartering towards me walking my way. He makes his way to 16 yards and is going for an opening and just as he gets the he spins around and starts walking back the way he came in. Remember he was quartering towards me well now he is quartering away and I have my shot he doesn't know I am there. I pull back hit anchor and release. Flight was perfect I see the arrow enter high but just at the lungs heading right for the off side shoulder. I Say Good hit Good hit and watch him run out hear him crashing through the brush but never that real stopping crash. OH NO! I get down get my arrow j missed and mark the spot he was standing no blood! OH SH@#. I get everything squared away and get my flash light and start on the trail. Find blood 6 yards from the shot point. As I am going I find a couple drops then it peters out. This goes on for 100 yards and I loose the trail. Do a circle and find blood he changed direction. I keep going the trail never gets better but I find blood every 5-6 steps. Bright red blood just not alot now I have gone a long ways and I am thinking I might have hit him farther back than I thought. I keep going and I look up and there is the shape and color every hunter lives to see at the end of a hard blood trail. BUCK DOWN!!
He ended up going 200 yards after I clipped the top of one lung and put it through the other. I just barley got the arrow to poke it's way through. I think if it made a bigger hole on the offside he would have bled out quicker and I would have found him earlier.

Way to go,Glen!Looking forward to the story.
Had a 2yr.old 8 pt and 2 small 6's come by the stand tonight...all were inside of 10yds. and the 8 offered a perfect slightly quartered away shot, but I've already used my buck tag.He went on to grunt and chase a doe around on the oak flat to my left.
Been having a hard time getting near the does.
Nice doe glen! Super cool photo with all the rock! Nice capture.
Nice deer, Glen!
That's a pretty area your in, too!
Finally after 2 years had some real buck action this morning, saw 3 different bucks, they were grunting and pushing around the does. And don't you know it 2 nice does and the 6 point come right past my tree and mill around, I forgot to mention that I was moving my stand and my bow, pack, and stand were on the ground and I was hugging a hemlock watching all 6 deer for 30 minutes all around me. Story of my bow hunting life, at least I'm in a good area. :biglaugh:
glenbo - congrats on your doe! I think you should get an award for the best picture of the year!
Bernie
Congrats Glen!
Glen love the picture. Beautiful place. Congrats.

This little fella was out cruising the Empire State yesterday. Think he was trick or treating?
Ha Izzy, I wish I had a camera with me for some of the slammers I've seen while on patrol!!
That buck is a stud,Izzy.
He is my brothers "pet". Him and many like him live in his development but are protected and grow old and fat. If he were in my yard I don't know if I could ever sleep thinking about him lurking in my woods. My sil sent me a pic of him in velvet chilling with 5 other big boys, 3 p&y! :scared:
Awesome buck Izzy...looks like a product of WNY
Eric
congrats Glen
That is the deer I saw this morning izzy! Don't tell anybody I am on the roof tops!

Trust me, he is haunting me. Betcha he goes 230#.
Nothing doing where I went yesterday. Can't get out again until Friday but the I'm off for a few days so I hope to make it happen. Saw a beautiful 8 that I couldn't quite put a shot on and I hope to see him again.
I fell apart tonight. ( victim of buck fever ) I had 2 good shot opportunities at the biggest buck since I've gone traditional and missed him clean both times. I never picked a spot. He was pestering a doe and was oblivious to me standing on the ground. I hope he sticks around until morning.
Congrats Glen!
Have witnessed some chasing this past weekend. saw a bunch of deer but no shots.
saw a buck this morning cruising the open at 9:45 am. I was scouting new ground. Snakes were all over today, nearly stepped on 8.
Keep after it Michael, we have all been there!
Izzy, that buck is definitely a stud!
I finally gave up and went looking for new ground at the PB, I found some very promising area, just not sure how to get in there yet without spooking everything out.
Its pretty Marshy and the trees do not lend themselves to climbing and allowing cover, I may sit in the tall grass instead, its about waist high, except where the deer have it trampled flat.
congrats Glen
Had this guy come in this morning at my camp following a doe doing more grunting than I have ever heard. First deer with the McCullough 59er my daughter had built for me last Christmas. (//%5Burl=http://smg.photobucket.com/user/1966kodiak/media/11-02%20buck.jpg.html%5D%20%20%20%20%5Bimg%5Dhttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/v298/1966kodiak/11-02%20buck.jpg) [/IMG]
And before anyone asks yes that's a traffic cone in the back ground I have one marking each corner of that piece of land.

Great buck Bob!
Great looking buck. Congratulations Bob.
:clapper: :clapper:
Saw a buck chasing a doe at first light, that was it until I scouted a new area, snuck up on a bedded doe and she saw me finally at 30 yards.
another deer must have moved in while I was looking for the perfect tree because it busted out when i turned to leave.
Went out this morning, no activity except for tree rats and chipmunks. I did see a small rub about 6 feet from my ground blind that wasn't there yesterday and found a fresh scrape about 20 yards away. This warm weather is killing me though.
This guy has been hangin around my blind. Have several pics of him but all late evening or early mornings.

Looking at the weather this weekend should be great ! Good luck to everyone .
That's an awesome buck Bob...congrats!
Wish this heat and wind would be done. No daytime activity here....
Great buck Bob!
Bob, congratulations! Starting today I have 10 days in a row off :bigsmyl:
Thanks Jim . I don't think you could have timed your vacation any better the weather is starting to cool off and it should get real interesting real quick !
Hope you're right Bob ! Been a slow year for me so far.Last year I was into deer every time I left the house but I've had a lot of 1/2 day sits this season where I just watched squirrels.Maybe tomorrow ...
Going woodcock/grouse hunting with my buddy from Ithaca on Sat, but will be back at it on Mon. Cooler temps should get them moving again, go get them men.
Pretty buck and bow, Bob!
Sweated my but off walking to my stand this morning. Saw a small 6. Then I was surprised to see a bunch of these around my stand when the sun came up!!

Great buck Bob. Can't wait for you to start putting on seminars. You never fail in killing good, mature, NY bucks.
Wow Sean those are some big time rubs!
Was not the greatest weather this morning,Had a spike come by around 8:15 and had no shot.We need a good cold snap.Did some stalking also no scrapes yet and very few rubs. There are 6 different bucks around my woods, but are not showing themselves or the does.Getting close they should be searching by now.................
Tyler & I were out this morning in Columbia Co.
NOTHING moving!!!!! We did find one fresh scrape though!
Sean are there elk in the area your hunting :scared: :scared: Truly those are some big rubs and I hope you get to see who made them ..
Out this morning. Four does at forty yards. No buck activity but good to see deer. Still have till late December.
So there he was.... 60 yards away, laying in the afternoon sun. Several large white pines stood between the two of us. Slowly I made my way to 25 yards. It looked like a good shot so I loosed an arrow.... and missed. The young buck paid no attention since he was stupid and began to groom himself. Humbled, but not discouraged, I attempted to make my way to a closer tree. Keeping another large pine between the buck and myself I was able to close the distance to 15 yards. Then when he turned his head my bow came to full draw and my 2nd arrow was sent on it's way. (http://i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o629/wetfeathers1/DSC08236_zpsf0jvnwz2.jpg) (http://s1151.photobucket.com/user/wetfeathers1/media/DSC08236_zpsf0jvnwz2.jpg.html)
The arrow hit the buck perfectly and he exploded from his bed. Adrenaline was now pumping through both our veins. A short bloody trail on the forest floor led me to my buck. He may not be the big one I was after but this hunt was far more rewarding than antlers on a wall. THANK YOU GOD FOR AN AWESOME DAY IN CREATION. (http://i1151.photobucket.com/albums/o629/wetfeathers1/DSC08245_zpsuxahbshi.jpg) (http://s1151.photobucket.com/user/wetfeathers1/media/DSC08245_zpsuxahbshi.jpg.html)
'feathers, that is a good looking deer, congratulations.
Shick
Congrats and stalking on the ground to boot !
Good on you, Wetfeathers!
Very nice Wetfeathers. Congratulations
Fwet, That is quite an accomplishment. First to spot them in their bed, then close the distance, then to make the shoot... well done...
Nice thanks for the great story...........
That is a trophy...
Congrats wet feathers!
Finally made it happen this Tuesday after learning to shoot a recurve and learning how to hunt from the ground up. Been hunting as much as I can all public from opening day when work allows. This was the first time I saw deer while In the tree. Used my lonewolf to climb above 20' about 15 yards off a main trail and 30 yards from a small field. Missed a small buck at 25 yards by like 4 feet but was the first arrow I released at an animal so I got the jitters out of my way. Later on this 3 point and some other smaller buck where feeding about 40 yards away and this guy come walking right past at 20 yards. Stopped the last deer and that didn't work well so decided to shoot while he was walking. Stared at the spot behind his shoulder the whole time, came to full draw and when released watched the arrow fly perfectly and hit him right in both lungs. He kicked and ran a half circle about 80 yards falling over and expiring in the fields. Thankfully saw him go down from the v of a big oak tree. After tagging, gutting and dragging all by myself which was interesting haha I got my landlord to snap this pick. Excuse the crazy look I was exhausted haha. Now he's all processed, vacuum sealed and in the freezer. This deer harvest solidified my passion for trad bowhunting and am happy to say it was my first animal harvest ever. I'm hooked!
By the way shooting my martin hunter 50#@28" probably 55@my 29.5" draw. Shooting 3rivers 300 spine trad onlys with stock insert and Simmons shark Safari head at 205 grain. Thing still cut hair after pulled out of shoulder. Hit one lung really well an clipped other one arrow stopping at his left shoulder, punched through a couple ribs like nothing. Wanted to say thanks to "minty" Jeff for inviting me to Suffolk archers to show me some tips and shoot some 3d with trad guys.

Congrats to you.Nice deer, thats what its all about!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:clapper: Way to go!
Way to go Mike and Mike. Congrats on a first.
Great job Mike. Congrats!!
Very cool hunts,Mike & Mike. Thanks for sharing!
Awesome you guys
Nice shooting Mike.
Way to go shinneycockfly! Great job!
Great job guys it looks like things are picking up ...
Saw five does tonight no bucks today.
To all you NY killers, if you could please check the TBONY forum for a project Im working on. Would appreciate the input.
congrats Michael and Michael
congrats Michael
Congrats to the Michaels.
I saw 3 does while trying to climb into a tree yesterday morning. They were under the tree I was in the day before. I would have went back to that tree except, when I climbed down I realized it was dead, complete with wood pecker holes big enough to fit my fist into. This new swamp area holds a lot of deer, saw another at 9 am but couldn't tell what it was.
My Buddy shot a 6 point this morning with his Damon Howatt. this is his second deer this year with that new old bow.
lots of small bucks chasing yesterday , passed a few and some smaller does but its warming up
Keep at it Drew, You have a beautiful place out there. Good Luck.
Congratulations to all!
Had a flat tire so instead of changing it in the dark I hunted a small plot out behind the house. I sat on my Niff Tee seat and at 1st light had a barred owl land 15 feet in front of me. Watched him for a while and although he did eyeball a chipmunk he was not in a hunting mood.
A few minutes later I hear something coming. At first I didn't see anything but could tell it was coming up the trail I was on. Two otters on land, walked past me at 15 feet. Super cool. I have video and will see if I can download it.
That's really cool!!
That's awesome definitely a surprise to see that!
Definitely a treat for me. I thought they were fishers that are common around here until they emerged from the brush. I guess otters are somewhat common here if you spend time on the river. I was about 1/4 mile from the Mohawk River. My phone will not condense the video. May have to put a trail cam out there.
Hunted Saturday, Sunday and Monday all day. Lots of hunters out on the public land on long island since the deer are finally moving and we had colder weather starting Sunday.
Had a real nice eight pointer come under my stand and walk straight away. I was at full draw but he didn't turn even when I grunted. I know a lot of people would have shot but I lost a deer to a one lung shot and I try to avoid that experience again. Saw a bunch of small bucks chasing and the does were nervous as heck walking around.
Have to work the rest of the week but I'll be out Saturday and Sunday shooting the first thing that gives me an opportunity.
That is cool as heck Izzy. (not the flat tire)
Keep at it Jeff, you will never regret not wounding a deer. I know, I know, a double negative lol. Good luck!
Saw one small, yearling doe today just as the rain was letting up. I don't usually hunt the rain but I was itching to see some rutting action and probably would have sat the tree with squirrel arrows just to be out there.
Seems strange to look for bucks to kill a doe but by golly, thats what Im doing until 11/21.
Had 3 doe and a yearling come out of a swamp behind and down wind of me. They browsed about 25 yards behind me for a few minutes on the acorn flat my stand is on then up went ones tail and they all hightailed it back into the swamp.
Finally saw some action. Just past daybreak I saw two does, and at 9:00, I saw big bodied 8 or 10 point that a buddy pushed toward me.Then when I climbed down, I saw another buck.
Unfortunately all were between 50 and 75 yards behind me on posted land.
Do you think they learned to read posted signs? LOL.
Glad you are finally seeing some deer Ken.
If what you are saying is True, its time to even the game and put posted signs on the other side of the tree and level the playing field. :readit:
Got home from work just before dark this evening and had 2 bucks sparring in the back field.I have the next 8 days of bow hunting off......Oh yeah....Should be worth it.....Going to hunt hard and try to fill my quest on taking one from the ground with my longbow....Good-luck everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good Luck Brotha! Shoot straight!!!
This has been a really slow season for me, few sightings which is pretty unusual> I havw to think it's the warm weather----thoughts?
I'd say, I've seen more movement early on in mid October, although I have only weekends to hunt. I haven't been out since Saturday morning, and even then the only deer that I saw was the small 6 I passed on. There's s cold front moving in today into tomorrow. Hopefully that'll jump start things.
Hope this week is good. I have the whole next week off to try to put more meat in the freezer. Good luck to all out there.
Thanks Matt! You Too,
as you already know, I saw 5 this morning..... Hunters that is lol. Must be a good spot  :deadhorse:
Its a breezy day but I am going to the spot I found a few weeks back until dark, just letting the dogs out then its back to the woods.
Good luck Sean. For me its been feast or Famine, I think you just have to be out when they are moving. Trying to find and learn a new spot has been proving challenging for me.
Got blown around this morning!! I got sea sick up there!!! Sun came up and another huge rub!!

I think this buck is hitting these trees at night. I may have re think this spot.
Wow, Great Rub Sean.
I saw a yearling at 4 pm. He was a little button buck at 25y yards. I had no shot. Then I saw a big doe at dark at about 80 yards cruising.
Tomorrow morning will be magical to be in the woods. I think it will be one of those mornings hunters live for..... I hope..... I cant wait to get back out there...
Yeah Charlie, the wind is finally settling down and I'll be out too.
Last time out I had a 9 or 10 pt. hangin' around for a bout an hour.Watched him bed down twice before he headed down towards the creek.Had a couple fawns right under the stand but the does never came in close enough for a shot.
Seeing lots of turkeys, too.Hope they're still around in the Spring.
Finally got it done this morning, grunted a small 4pt up but he circled down wind a decided he better leave a little while late this guy Walked up to 6 yards I was in my ghost blind and gillie suit he took a look a decide to turn around and get back a little I drew as he started walking away and he turned broadside at 12 yards and caught me finishing my draw. Unfortunately for him he took to long to study whatever movement he saw and I dropped the string. Shot looked great and I was pumped when I saw the arrow enter but then it abruptly stopped. He lunged forward and collapsed and started doing the broken spin circles I wait a minute cause I still though the shot was perfect but then went and finished thing the autopsy will tell more

Anyway congrats to all of you guys so far and if you haven't scored yet keep at it, it ain't over till it's over.
Nice!! Way to get it done!! Congrats!
Way to go Greg
I've been trying to hunt more from the ground this year from natural blinds. A guy at my club showed me his ghost blind and I have to say while I initially thought it was a gimmick it's really pretty neat. I may have to bite the bullet on one.
Thanks this is the Same blind last Year. By the way this is my first trad deer from the ground and it was awesome!!!
(http://i1166.photobucket.com/albums/q611/Kopper1013/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps1iwrny71.jpg) (http://s1166.photobucket.com/user/Kopper1013/media/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps1iwrny71.jpg.html)
They are really nice only problem is they only cover about 90 degrees so you gotta brush in the sides some, and I leave the direction my wind is blowing open cause chances are if the deer get there or come from there they are gone anyways. I always put some branches in from th achieve this effect but it doesn't have to be many
Filled a tag this morning story and pictures to follow.
Nice job Greg. Congratulations.
Congrats on the spike!
I've been hunting clothes to the bedding area on my hunting property for the last week or so because all other areas of the property have been pretty much devoid of all deer and fresh sign. Last Saturday I had a real nice 2 1/2 or 3 1/2 year old 8 pointer chasing a doe by me all morning the closes that he came was 15 yards but it was behind me were I didn't have a shot. I had this same deer broad side at 20 yards during the doe only portion of the season. I've been hunting for this buck since the beginning of the season always passing on the "little guys" with the end of the season in sight I decided that meat in the freezer was more of a priority. So this morning I went out with hopes of seeing the big 8 but decided that I was going to take any deer that presented a decent shot opportunity. At about 8:00 this morning I had the chance at a small buck that I had passed on before and made the shot. Fortunately he only made it about 50 yards because there was no blood trail even though I double lunged him I must have hit a rib on the off side as there is no exit wound. On this hunt I used a homemade long bow 125 grain eclipse broadhead with a 125 grain steel insert and carbon express arrows. Pictures will follow ,Bob Brown will post them for me.

Here you go Alex Congrats !
Thanks Bob.
Congrats Greg and Alex, great deer to both of you. Also gotta love a pit bull family. You ever try blood trailing with them?
Very nice congrats
I got my wish tonight. Haven't seen any rutting activity from the stand yet and really was longing to. I pouted to my wife and kids all week about not getting to hear my favorite sound, brrrrrrrp, brrrrrrrrp. :knothead:
So to remedy that I went to my "Old Reliable" ridge where I just relocated a stand. The landowner was cutting wood when I got there and unbelievably tried to apologize to me. See, there are some good folks left out there.I offered to help with the wood but in so many words he told me to get on up the hill and hunt.
"Not so fast dude." I tell him and tell him to walk with me to my truck so I could show him something. Tonight I gifted him a Bear Montana at 50# and some CX 150s. He was in his glory and now he could shoot with his 8 year old son who I gave a Mad Dog pup long bow last year. Im just hoping he catches the fever and lays that x bow down.
Now it was time to hit the tree stand. About 2 hours in I saw a line of 3 deer walking down from the bedding area and one was acting kinda wild, hopping and dashing but I didn't see any antlers. They mosey away and a half hour later a little 60#er came walking from downhill, all intent on finding out what she was smelling (Evercalm) on my tree. She stayed for a long time just milling around and then my wish was granted when I hear grunting coming from behind me. I turned slowly to see a big body coming through the hemlocks and grunting away. No mossy horn but I just needed this performance. The 3 pointer walked directly to my tree and began licking the Evercalm!!! After he had his fill he checked out the fawn and she didn't care for him and he didn't care for her. He just foraged for beech nuts 10 feet in front of me until 5 more deer came running up the hill and he lit off after them. Never saw what they had on their heads but it was chase.
Just wanted to share an exciting evening and again tell you how much confidence I have in that Evercalm. Good luck out there folks. Congrats guys!
Nashoba, does that bow have pierce points? Looks sweet and Id like to see some more pics if you have em.
Thanks guys. Izzy the bow does have Pierce points the riser is African Black wood with yellow and red heart Pierce points and the limbs are tulip with a maple core. As far as the dogs go it took all I could do to get the brindle male to sit there , he was abused and is afraid of everything but he is one of the nicest dogs that I've ever had the female on the other hand is a little to high strung but both are very friendly . We also have a couple of hunting beagles that live in a kennel kinda funny watching all 4 play together. If I can figure out how to post pictures I will put some up of the bow.
Congrats Greg and Alex.
This morning was as nice a morning as we've had for some time. No deer seen although I know the property I was at has a lot of them.
Tomorrow I have off and will head to the swamp but have to pull out early because a furnace repair is in order, The Service tech will be here mid day.
Izzy, Glad you were able to witness some rutting activity.
Nice buck Alex! I love the family shot too, that's great.
congrats Alex
Congrats Drew :readit:
Congratulations,Greg and Alex.
Does Drew have something to tell us? :saywhat:
Thanks Charlie , Drew and Jim . Jim glad you liked the family photo my oldest daughter just passed her hunter safety course so we will have one more person for our annual bunny hunt.
Don't forget to add your deer to the tally thread in the TBONY forum if you're so inclined. Thanks, Izzy
Izzy that is a great picture! Really an awesome encounters!
Congrats to Greg and Alex! Well done!
Good job Alex , like Jim said love the pic of the Simon crew. Tell Bella congrats on the safety course

Hitting the woods last night,I knew it would be my last sit before the orange army hits the woods this weekend.I hadn't been able to take a doe yet,so last night when 2 does and a fawn slowly worked their way down to me it was 'now or never'.After a few minutes the one doe finally stepped out from the brush.I hit anchor and the arrow hit it's mark...she didn't make it 20 yds.and was down.
congrats Jeff
Way to go Jeff! Can taste those back strap cutlets now.........
... mike ...
Good job to all who have scored......I think this Thursday will be my opening day......at last. My knee is coming along and I'm going to give a AM hunt a shot. Rain is in the forcast but I will still go and sit in an enclosed blind. Waldrop-Pac seat, binos and my Stalker Coyote with laminated Doug-Fir arrows with B.P Deadheads that I got from Chad Holm. I can't wait!!!!!!!
Nice doe Jeff. Thanks Gerald Jim and I have been taking Bella waterfowl hunting she has been doing pretty good , now if she could only build some upper body strength to pull a hunting weight bow that would be great.
Ron glad you are able to get out. Nice job Jeff !
Alex don't wish Bella bigger! Keep her little, before you know it she will be all grown up :)
Looking forward to our gatherings this winter, always good to spend a little time with you boys.
Nice Doe Jeff, she looks great!
Great doe Jeff. Congratulations!
Congrats Jeff, on my way out to bag a nanny myself. Tomorrow will be my last hunt before the woods get ugly. Ive had a good, enjoyable season so far and am thankful for it.
Nice shooting guys.
Congrats Jeff !!
Way to get it done.
Man love seeing all these NY trad deer!!! Went out Sunday and saw a lot of spikes and does moving around, almost had a doe come right by me but fellow hunters spooked her. Hoping to get out Thursday, have posion ivy reaction pretty bad right now so a trip to the doc should help.
Also am like the pit bull love here, thanks Izzy for talking in the other post about you having your pit mix track blood. Now I have something new to do with my pit rescue. He definitely has the prey drive and LOTS of energy haha.
Good for you Mike, that dogs tracking ability will amaze you. Sat for 5 hours this morning only to be schooled by a long nosed doe. Saw her at 1st light coming out of a bedding area about 100 yards away. In a few steps she had me pegged and watched my stand area for about 20 minutes before fading into the one plantation.
She reminds me of "Karen", another old doe from 4 or 5 years ago that won many an encounter between her and I on the same ridge, bet its her fawn. To be continued.......
I sat until 1 this morning. It sure was cooler than I expected. I loved every minute of it and expected to see some activity from deer. It wasn't to be. gonna do a little yard work before I have to pick up my partner from work and take her to job 2.
Friday will be my last go at it before regular season starts. I think I'm going to switch things up and sit next to the road. If you guys drive past honk, I'll wave.
Good Job Jeff, and heck you are almost smiling this time in your photo lol.
Good Luck Ron, It will feel good for you to be in the woods again, bow in hand.
Charlie, I was out this morning as well and had high hopes of seeing some deer activity, but it was not to be. I've got plans to sit 2 more times before the invasion Saturday.
Man Izzy those old does are amazing, you outsmart them and you got a trophy on your hands. Its amazing at how fast they pick you off even from a distance.
Well I did it......took my new knee into the woods for a 4 hour sit. Saw a couple of big Grays but no deer. Still it was nice to have an opening day and just be there.
Glad to see you made it to the woods,Ron.Don't push that knee too much, though.
Happy to see you were able to hunt this year Ron.
I hope to get out a few more times.
That Is great news Ron.
Thanks guys......I may have over did it a bit because I'm real stiff today. But I'll get it loosened back up and I will be fine. I was great to sit in the woods again......the smells, sounds, just a great morning.
No luck for me today but I did find another promising area.
the last sit before the big bang , seen some does and couple bucks but no shots.
Sat tonight also Drew and did see one lone deer but like you nothing close. It was a fun year even though for the second year in a row I didn't shoot one, I had to rethink why I'm out there and feel fine about my season. There was a time when I put a ton of pressure on myself to get at least one deer that I took the joy right out of it. I hunted over 80 hours this year , saw more deer than last and had fun.
Ron, glad you were able to get out and take it all in this fall!
Aint nothing stopping you fellas from hunting the gun season with sticks, we've got a lot of time yet. Think positive and as you say, its about enjoying yourself without pressure. Good luck fellas.
Will be out Sunday morning. Have a pocket full of tags, and I am not very picky. Hoping for an opportunity.

Similar to my old saying in college, cept it was Friday night and they weren't tags in my pocket. :knothead:
Got out to my urban spot tonight. Saw a small, yearling doe from 15 yards on the ground. A bit to small, I try not to kill those tiny ones when I can control myself.
My daughter just texted me from Ithaca College.
Said deer are everywhere, running all over.
Go get 'em!
How's it looking in NY are you guys still seeing rut activity?
Going to take my 8 year old son out with me Friday afternoon and sit in a blind. Never taken him out before and he's pumped.
Friday was the last day I saw rutting activity with two young bucks cruising. Nothing since then but Id imagine theres still some action in the quieter areas.
Almost hit a good Buck coming home from the chiropractors office about s half hour ago. He was chasing
Good to hear activity was picking up a bit. I saw the most beautiful ugly spike Saturday morning but he has been the first buck I have seen in weeks and definitely was not rutty. I think hes too young lol.

Thanks guys. I should add I'm about as excited as him to finally get him out there and spend some time in the woods together. If the trip goes as planned will report back.
Good luck Joseph! I hope he sees some deer, to get excited over.
Headed out in the Morning pre Turkey feast!
There is a fresh scrape and a huge rub where I am headed including heavy trails and still a lot of Acorns.
They are forecasting a south wind which I think will be perfect for where I expect the deer to be. Of course we all know how that goes
Best Of Luck Charlie! I think that spike is sayin' it's five minutes after eight... ...
... mike ... aka captain waysiah ... :archer2: ...
Thanks Mike, This morning was as beautiful of a mortning as anyone could ask for. Unfortunately hunting public land also has its challenges.
The neat thing was I ran into a guy who was taking his daughter to her tree stand..... I wished them luck but unfortunately her stand was where I was planning on sitting lol.
I found another spot. It was a great spot except I think the deer are hitting it after dark due to pressure. Rubs, scrapes and trails Galore.
At 5 after 8 this morning I had a guy walking and grunting come past. not 3 minutes after he was gone a flock of turkeys came in. I sat until 11:30 hoping for mid day action which sometimes happens on this public area.
not today.... I'm not plainin tho. I could have been at work.
we made it out today and enjoyed the afternoon in the blind together. No sightings but it was a good time nonetheless .
Wow have the deer been moving these last few days! During work, I've seen a pile including a big buck which was close to my honey hole. Just saw 3 doe come out of the same hole. Might give a go if I get out of work on time.
Hoping I get a visit from a nice big doe I will let you know how it goes!
I'll be heading out tomorrow.
I've had a tough year since my best spot has construction going on near by and the deer are avoiding the area and I don't have permission to hunt where they rerouted.
I've been tweaking another area I hunted a little and finally got it just right I think. There is one really good buck I've got on camera twice in the area and I finally saw him in the flesh last week at first light. A turkey started walking and he was gone. He is probably nocturnal now but I can hope.
I've been out quite a bit and have been fortunate to take two more does with my longbow.
That's great,Terry, doing it with a bow during 'gun' and all.
Congrats Terry!
Congratulations Terry. You always get it done. I will be out Sunday. I haven't seen a deer since the gun season started. Hopefully things will pick up.
Congrats terry, ive been greedy, working a lot of overtime. I got to walk the woods for a few minutes this morning and I saw a fresh scrape from last night. The night guys saw a lot of deer and 4 got hit by cars in the last 24.
I will get out this week for sure. Good luck men, still time.
congrats Terry
Scouted a new section of public land mid day. had a doe and 2 fawn run in when I was half up the tree. I was able to pull the bow up and get an arrow on the string. she smelled where I stepped at 12 yards. she was hard quartering to me. she bounded twice and was safe. her fawns ran up to her preventing a shot at them.
at 4:00 a lone deer was coming in and then skirted my set up by 40 yards.
This spot has me pretty excited. It shows a lot of browsing activity and has a bunch of trails intersecting at the end of a long ridge. there is agriculture fields about 900 yards away and the deer seem to be bedding behind some commercial operation 150-200 yards the other way.
Hopefully I will catch them on their feet in the morning, then I will give the spot a break.
Funny thing is, I had a guy on a 4 wheeler ripping around me when I decided to climb this tree. Figured the deer would come out when he left.
A Buddy saw 11 deer today.Bucks were chasing.
I'll be out in the heat tomorrow. Only a few weeks left. Gonna hunt every chance I get.
Saw a small buck with a broken back leg. no shot offered. Scrapes are everywhere and getting hit hard.
Looking for some lower temps and maybe even a little snow for the last weekend-- should kick off a second round of the rut if we're lucky!
Susan, There is no question teh second rut has kicked in here.
Looks like the weather will cool off a bit this weekend. I really look forward to it.
Found fresh scrapes today with bow in hand, no deer though.
They've been seeing some chasing as well.
Hopefully they are still at it on Saturday. Last Saturday I didn't see a thing but it was close to 70 degrees during the day.
Cross all fingers for the weekend to have some activity!
Hunted what will most likely be my last deer hunt for the season. It felt good to still hunt the mountain. Didn't see a deer but the squirrels are looking good and ready to catch an arrow or two. Not the one I missed today, that sucker cost me an MFX Classic. :banghead:
My buddy saw 4 different bucks today... all cruising. Come on weekend. I just wish we could hunt deer into February....
Took my daughter and muzzle loader tonight, saw 1 small buck and 10 yes ten does, all in the woods not a field, going to take the Bear A mag in the morning hope to catch up with the buck from my stand.
Hope to get out Monday...good luck to all
Went this morning and saw a few new scrapes. Didn't see a deer though. Hopefully the rain will quit and I can get after them tomorrow and Sat.
Good Luck Terry!
well thats all she wrote for my deer season. I saw 2 yesterday but the momma doe was very smart and cautious with the wind. It took her about an hour to cover about 50 yards. she never ate once, just a few steps and scan for 5-10 minutes, then repeat. Just as it got dark, she started coming my way but there was no way I could justify a shot with how dark it was.
Today I had squirrels all around and it was a very beautiful afternoon in the stand.
Time for small game....
The hope for next year . . .

All I saw in legal hours was does at 40+ yards. A good season for all but eats!
