Title: The push west
Post by: kevsuperg on September 24, 2015, 12:42:00 PM
Well I woke up this morning unemployed.
Yesterday was my last day at work and today my wife and I leave new york and began the push west to idaho.
I'll be stopping in Minnesota for a week of whitetails with the bear grizzly recurve. My brother in law has trail cam pics of a 3 legged buck with a gnarly rack.
Then it's on to Denver to see friends and visit RMSG, 1st time . maybe I'll post a review.
From Denver its on to Coeur d'Alene idaho were I'll check out the north idaho traditional scene and report back.
Wish us luck. I'll post up some pics of the Minnesota monster if I get one.
To the friends I made in NY , I'll see ya  down the road , good hunting to ya.

Generally speaking of course, where abouts are you going to be hunting in MN?  Maybe I'll see you out there.

You will love CDA. I lived up on Green Bluff just north of Spokane for a couple years and miss it greatly! Black Sheep is a sporting goods store that has a fair amount of traditional archery items. Look up Chris Cox of Habu. Also Spokane Valley Archey has a nice 3-d course that costs $10 to shoot all day and is rarely crowded.

A buddy of mine just moved to CDA, He is having the time of his life and sending me elk hunting photos daily.

Have a safe trip, I dont blame you to get out of NY. I hope to be on your trail and stop short in WI in the not to distant future.

No Ron this is a permanent move, sight unseen leap of faith. Just can't take east coast politics anymore
Mnfn, I'll be hunting in windom.
Stopping outside of toledo to eat, nothing traditional to report here .

I've tried to no avail to convince my wife to move west. She'll have none of it. I wish you all the best in your new start.

OK, made it to windom at 9pm, sitting out watching the blood moon.
There is an elk farm behind my brother in laws and the elk are bugling, what a lovely sound.
So tomorrow am its off to check the trail cams and food plots then hunt in the evening.
Lots of corn and beans around and the farmers are just starting to pull the crops.
This oughta be exciting, stay tuned.

Well the first evening sit is over, saw 6 deer, all does.
Had one blowing downwind behind me and just after dark while waiting at the gate for my ride, two deer, just black images, walk within 20 yds of me.
Temps in the upper 50s with a 15 mph wind , wore my new sitka 90% pants and jacket. Stayed very comfortable hardly felt the wind .best of all no burrs. The wind also taught me that I need to install an arrow holder on my bow, good thing I had extra arrows
Back at it again tomorrow, stay tuned

Good luck. Been in your shoes before.. I lived in Blackfoot for several months before I moved back home. Had a buddy in Boise try to talk me into moving further west... But I was too hard headed and too broke. Hindsight I wish I would have listened.
CDA is a pretty area. Nice people too

Day two, morning sit is over, low 50s , 10+ mph NNE wind. Didn't see a deer but made friends with two mice living in the tree stand seat.
Back at it this evening

Well the evening sit ended with a doe busting me,she came up a grass swatch along a standing corn field. Right into my downwind. I was 18' up a ladder stand. It was good to see one close.
Tomorrow I'll be down by a river watching a well worn trail.
The same trail I took a 8 pt on last year in November with my wheel bow.
This year it's bears and zwickeys.

Wednesday morning was a bust, bad wind.
The evening was better , i sat it the cornfield along the strip of grass I saw the two doe in the other night.
Wind in my face about four rows into the corn, out step two doe from the wood lot about 40 yds away they walk directly to the nose jammer I had sprayed on the grass in front of me, about 4 yds away. No shot but very exciting.
The doe knew I was there but couldn't figure out what I was. Just stared at me and ate grass, then casually walked off.
No hunting this am, assembling a bail blind and a tower blind.
Will be back at it tonight.

Just thought I'd check in , hunted hard thru Saturday with no luck in Minnesota, saw a few just no shots. Windy and warm that's my hunting for this yr. Don't want to pay NR fees in idaho.
Woke up this morning in Rapid City SD. had to skip Denver and RMSG. Ran outta time
Good luck to everybody this hunting season.
I'll report back once we're in idaho.

Best of luck. Sounds like a heckuva journey. Stayed in Rapid City for a hunt a while back and had a hoot. Great Native American museum in town.
