I am thinking of having my first custom bow made. And am looking for your opinion on what I should look at. I am leaning on a toelki whip. I don't want a real long wait time. And hear good things about them and like the slender look. I have owned a thunder horn coup stick that I really liked that was 58". Then I had a 62" Fedora extreme 3 piece that I liked the length but not so the grip. I also have owned a ancient spirit tree stick that was 56" felt way to short to me. I have had a caribow wolverine that I liked the gip on and was OK at the 58" but think I would have liked a slinx or peregrine better. Right now I have a tomahawk @ 62" but don't really like the grip to square maybe if it was not a take down it would feel better. Any way I am wanting a 60 to 62" take down bow with R/d limbs. What should I look at other then the whip or a centaur?
Don't need anything more than a Whip. Dan probably has one in stock.
Whip and centaur glass are the best two for my money. Get a whip now and get on Jims list and grab a new bow a couple years down the road.
My Whip was made pretty quickly by Dan and is a quick quiet bow. I also have a Mohawk Sparrowhawk that's ultra quiet and feels great in the hand. The wait time was also not long, maybe a month. The two bows feel different but each has things I like.
For quick build times, Toelke is the way to go. As far as other nice r/d longbows, look at the Leon Stewart Slammer. Great bows for sure, but so is anything made by the Toelkes!
go try some bows ,go to shoots .
Yup I'm with grayfeather on this one so so so many options out there and I know it's hard to just go put your hands on everything you want to try but imho it's worth it in the end but if you want to try that whip there some awesome bows but remember this is a sickness and I suspect you like most of us on here will keep changing it up lol :jumper: best of luck with your decision
It's hard to beat a Sarrels Blueridge takedown longbow if you are looking for an R/D bow.
Bisch
Before someone else points out the obvious, Black Widow PL I, II, V, or X. I can speak from personal experience that a Great Northern Lil Creep, Yellowstone Half-Breed and Northern Mist Witbeck are great in every aspect but I've busted a bunch of nocks with my PL. I don't know why I shoot it so well but I won't argue with it.
Big Jim Buffalo!!
Toelke or Howard Hill Archery for me.
Mad Dog
Stewart slammers are my favorites.
As you are driving between Arizona and Montana stop into RMSG in Colorado.... I don't think you will see more trad bows under one roof!
Toelke, Great Northern Bushbow of Maddog for quick builds and great bows
I always liked the Great Northern Bushbow, especially with the Jack Knife option. Jerry might even have one in stock.
Denny
I really like my Black Widow PlX takedown. Plus you can get a custom grip from Black Widow.
Another vote for Maddog. Excellent bows
You can't go wrong with a Whip. They are that good!
Try to shoot as many as you can before you buy or you will end up with a bunch of them.
stewart slammer - you'll never regret it. leon usually has a few in stock.
BigJim has a couple Buffalos in stock.
If you liked your Wolverine I would recommend the Slynx.
I am a recurve shooter, but have played around with half a dozen different longbows. Always gravitate back to recurves. So I am not the best person to advise you- actually one of the worst.
But there are some very, very good bow hunters on Tradgang who shoot Pronghorns. You should at least take a look at them.

Whats wrong with that? :goldtooth:
The grip has always been the issue with me. Had great bows but if the grip didn't feel right I had to send that bow down the road.
You could take a look at the Sasquatch hybrid long bow. i build these in 58", 60", & 62". and is still my personal favorite for hunting. I do custom grip shapes on these to match any wrist angle you would like too from low to high...
But.....You can't go wrong with Dan Toelke, or Jimmy Reeves bows either. Both of those guys build some very nice stuff, and are great guys.

This is my hunting bow....

I sure like my Black Widow PLX, with the Toby grip. A little fuller, with a sort of a palm-swell shape on both sides of the grip. Made all the difference in the world to me.
I too just got the "okay" from the wife to order a Whip!
I'm going to save a few more bucks, but I can't wait to make that phone call.
You could Try Calling John at Big River Bows, Sometimes his wait time is a couple weeks.
Dick Robertson always has bows in stock to sell immediately...also does a TRY BEFORE YOU BUY to make sure it is right one.
He is one of the long time bowyers in the community and builds a great reflex-deflex longbow....as well as recurves.

here are just longbows

Black Canyon takedown. You wait awhile but its worth it.
Any here collect or have high interest in Leon Stewart bows?
Black Widow PL
Ditto on the Bigfoot. Plus the others. There are a whole lot of really good bows being built. God bless, Steve
My personal favorite of the 3 piece takedown D/R longbows would be the Firefly by Jim Jones. Braveheart Archery is a sponsor here and carries his bows. You could have one custom made by Jim as well. Go to Bravehearts site and check some out.
I was lucky to trade a Wheel bow for a Toelke Whip Classic, It is slowly becoming my favorite bow. I have plans to have the wife get me a Whip 2 piece for Xmass.
Do yourself a favor and look up Allen at Liberty Bows here in Oregon. He is a very skilled craftsman and a man of integrity. The
I can't believe nobody has mentioned Chad Holm I have shot his Osprey and it is an awesome bow in every aspect.
Take a look at pronghorn longbows.
I love mine.
62" is a very user friendly length
Have you looked at Omega bows?
Nothing fancy looking, but real good shooter at a real good price. He makes an oak riser that adds a nice bit of weight to the bow.
Whip all day long for me. So quiet, well made, and two piece makes it the perfect mass weight bow for me. Once I got mine I stopped checking the classifieds and have zero desire for another bow. My buddy just custom ordered a PIKA and it is being delivered in less than a month. Dan is the man.
How about sky/Belcher longhorn awesome bows!
FYI...I just looked at sarrels archery and he has a bunch in stock and on sale 20% off!
Love my Sasquatch. Kirk will do you right
I have a Wild Horse Creek and also a Maddog. Can't go wrong with either of them.

x2
Well, four pages of different favorites must help narrow it right down for you!
I really like my Dwyer, they have 4 different styles to choose from. Never heard a bad thing about them.
i love my falcon td by trinity longbows.
I said it before, try as many as you can. I now have 8 and they all have different feeling to them.
The good thing about it is that now I have 8 of them.
Good luck on your search
SLB, I bet it helps a lot. :-)
Again, I favor my BW PL longbow...
But for some reason I also want to point you toward the Toelke. I shot a 66" Lynx 3-piece TD longbow that made an indelible impression on my mind. It felt like a 3-piece version of my Black Widow PL. Toelke makes wonderful bows.
I have 8 Morrison Shawnees. They are hard to beat. I prefer 62" carbon/foam limbs, but I also have 62" boo core limbs that shoot really well.
I also have a Thunderchild(2 piece), Centaur double carbon, and an Eagle Wing and they all shoot well also.
