Anyone totally paint your arrows? What type of paint did you use, any pics?
I don't post pictures on here, don't won't them lost in the cloud. But I have sprayed some flo orange with krylon that I small game hunt with because I got tired of loosing them. They have held up good.
I do
I like Krylon spray paint with a poly dip over them!!
I also use acrylic art paint , poly over.
Full paint is my favorite!! (http://i1166.photobucket.com/albums/q618/brianlocal3/arrows/E41255E3-0E5A-4559-A171-B0BBBAE4F764_zpsr8vufy5z.jpg) (http://s1166.photobucket.com/user/brianlocal3/media/arrows/E41255E3-0E5A-4559-A171-B0BBBAE4F764_zpsr8vufy5z.jpg.html)

This group was all hand applied acrylic paint. I just squeezed it into a rag and wiped it on, let it dry and poly'd over it

Another suggestion you can cut your paint with water (half and half) and it will cover like a stain.
I used to use white paint cut with thinner. They really do show up but I missed the grain pattern so went back to grey stain and clear coat.
Wow....those are cool!
Those are some great looking arrows. I might have to try that.
I like the way the pretty stains look on my woodies but nothing seems more practical or easier to find than my orange hunting shafts. I've used rustoleum spray paint and even orange India ink that I picked up cheap. But what whittler said works best for me orange cresting paint (masters choice from hobby store) thinned with a little water just enough to let a little wood grain show through and wiped on like a stain, also the easiest. I just ordered some shafts from surewood to put some orange on as I'd gotten rid of a few and turned last years broadhead shafts into stumping or small game shooters. Getting ready for October 15. While living out west I went through hundreds of arrows. No frills was the way to go. I found a sage green color in the sample book at the local NAPA store that I liked... automotive lacquer... and used it for years.
Dependable, repeatable color, and lacquer dries in minutes. One dip from each end would do it.

Please disregard the purple silencers.
Really like the arrows guys.
Charlie, love that pic!
Charlie, where was that picture taken?

Here is some I did up like old Bear arrows. Used water based paint from Hobby Lobby.
Picture was taken "out on the Mesa" near Boulder, Wyoming. The black speck in the background is a golden eagle that was hanging around that day.
Charlie, I grew up in Rock Springs. My dad still lives there. He and my mom have cabin on New Fork Lake, just north of Pine Dale. The Wind River mountain range is a beautiful place to hunt.
Charlie, Who's the guy in the pic? That's not the Charlie lamb I know! :goldtooth:

If you are using paint why do you need to seal them with anything?? Paint is a sealer.
I like oil based rustoleum and I brush it on about 4 coats with a foam brush. Durable and duco sticks well.

Been doing them this way for a while. Love it!
Thanks guys for the response and pics they all look great, I did some white with Krylon and they weren't as glossy as I would have liked so I might try brushing with Rustolem.
Two4
I coat mine because my bag target scratches the paint right off to bare wood. Also I stump a lot and I've had it wear the paint right off.
I used the industrial enamel that gets super hard but it still wore off
Greg (two4) do you dilute your paint at all??
I know fhe rustomleum I have is thick and add quite a bit of circumference to the shaft
I love those full length yellow arrows. Bout impossible to lose.....
Anyone full length paint carbon?
Nope I do not thin it. I have pounded these into rocky ground and they stay pretty glossy and durable. Easy and quick, I always have 6 in the making. It may add a little fatness but i dont sand so it fills in the imperfections in the wood. I shoot alot so i dont spend a lot of time on fancy cresting.
I'm with you there Greg, I don't spend much time on the fancy stuff
Thanks for your response, I'm gonna give em 4 coats and see how they do for me. I was doing two as I got full coverage
Why would some one want to paint arrows ?

Here was a new arrow / broadhead I started practicing with and shooting into the ground/dirt. I wiped off the mud/dirt with a wet rag and you can see the shaft is still pretty good. Most of the paint is gone from the Ace head though. Tough coating.

Impressive Greg!!
I got the first coat on last night. It says give 12 hrs between costs so I'll recoat every night for 4 nights and give her a go!!
Thumper, I love those arrows. I have made the real blue ones before and really liked em
These are awesome. Love the yellow arras
Yes, I use white as the first coat and then my color of choice.....I only lightly sand after the first coat and do each subsequent coat in following nights without sanding between. The oil based spreads out nicely if you have a good even coat and really diminishes any brush lines. Takes about 15 or 20 minutes to coat 6 shafts. I hang them to dry by the taper by screwing each into a large wire nut and hang from a 550 cord clothesline in the basement.
I am working on 6 all yellow ones right now and fletching them....I'll post up a pic when they are done.
Wow, very nice....
I never would of thought that many people painted their Arrows...
That's really nice...gonna have to try that...those are some really good looking arrows guys.
My hunting arrows this year

These are made using orange gasket lacquer which I can't get anymore. If anyone knows a source for it, please let me know.

I agree Gordon.....if someone knows a source, I'd be interested as well.
I really like the color blue for small game arrows.
Really stands out in nature on the forest floor.
Gordon those are sweet looking arrows..

My buddy shoots all white arrows with white feathers. We call them angels...
Anyways, he uses white gasket lacquer. Two dips and he's done.
He's been shooting the same arrows for a long time, so I wonder if he can even get it anymore?
Gasket lacquer is used on pencils and I talked to the company that makes it and if I bought a large enough quantity they would sell me orange gasket lacquer. I could save a little money if I went with Home Depot orange because they already had the formula. It was just more than I could use in ten lifetimes.
Thanks for all your pics and info guys I'm already planning my next batch.
Gordon
I'm sure you could sell off the excess pretty easily
Great thread.
Kinda brought an old thread back here to answer a couple of questions I have about fully painted arrows......
I love the looks of these, and really think the "visibility" aspect of these will be nice. As well as being able to find 'em a little easier than my stained and crested arrows.....
1. Does a guy straighten, cut to length, taper, glue on the nocks, then mask the nocks and begin painting? Seems like the nocks absolutely HAVE to go on before paint, to orient the spine correctly..... What "order of events" do you use to get the painted shafts to the fletching stage?
2. How much weight would y'all estimate the paint adds to the shafts? My reloading grain scale works good for my pistol & rifle reloads, but won't go high enough to weigh my arrows. An earlier post from a member ("two4hooking", I think??) recommended 4 coats of brushed on rustoleum. Now, I like the heavy arrows philosophy, but this seems like it would really add some "chunk" to even Port Orford cedars???
I use rattlecan paint.
Wooden arrows are expendable so I don't spend a lot of time making them look really nice. Hate to make the arrows really pretty then break one. Or lose one.
When I spray painted my carbons it seemed like a coat of paint weighed around 10 grains
If you use wood shafts you can use yellow and white gasket lacquer, better thin it though, the stuff I've purchased was thick.
I do. I paint my squirrel arrows blaze orange. The whole shaft. Impossible to lose them even when shooting up into trees at squirrels. When using carbon arrows for deer hunting I paint the entire shaft with grey rustoleum. It makes it easier for me to aim in low light and blood shows up better on it as well.
Jon, do you spray the shafts? Or another method. And do you clear coat them?
