Title: Chundoo/lodge pole pine arrows
Post by: Homey88 on September 05, 2015, 07:58:00 AM
Anyone have experience with making hunting arrows from chundoo/lodge pole pine? Just ordered a dozen shafts and will make my first set of wooden arrows from scratch. Any feedback as to durability, etc? Thanks in advance.

I have bought raw shafts and turned them into arrows...it was a very good wood in my opinion.  I just latched onto Douglas Fir when I was testing various woods for new arrows to replace cedar (hickory, ash, poplar, douglas fir, lodgepole, maple, etc).

They are more durable than cedar, heavier than cedar, very straight and takes stain well.

They are actually better than douglas fir I think as they come straighter and stay that way better....I just love the grain in douglas fir.  :)

It is outstanding arrow wood...you are going to like them.  No smell like cedar but great hunting arrow material.

I like pine arrows alot! Last shafts I bought, were from Larry at Lost Nation.

Shot a squirrel this morning with one, too.

Twig archery out of Ohio was selling Chundoo shafts.

I have one arrow made from pine. It was given to me by an old guy I met while chasing mulies last year. He hand planed the shaft and it is the most perfect wooden arrow I have. Shooting Doug fir right now.

I never sold PO Cedar when I had my shop opened. all I sold was Chundoo and I never had anyone complain. Good grain, tough, easy to tweak for straightness, held a nice stain.

Doug Fir from Surewood Steve is an excellent wooden shaft. I made up 2 dz last year for the longbow and I'm very impressed with the quality.

I'll be spending close to a week among LOTS of standing dead lodgepole pines very soon.  Planning on cutting a few lengths and making some shafts.  Hard to imagine better than d for but would be nice to find it such.

I still have a few flu flus I made from some lodgepole pine. I have had them about three years, killed squirrels with them and really abused them and I still shoot them alot at softballs, soccer balls, into trees ect. Refletched them three times now and put on a new coat of polyurethane.
They are holding up very well, and I never have to straighten them.
I highly recommend them, great shafts imo.

I bought some shafts from Bill Carlson a few years ago. Very tough arrows. They were straight and high quality.

I was out shooting some chundo arrows this afternoon, they flew like darts. I traded Bill out of the shafts years ago for turkey feathers If I remember right.

I liked them. Still have a few dozen raw I got off Bill years ago.  They make good arrows.

And they worked pretty good.  Doe turned into it after it stuck on the other side.

Eric: I still have those feathers. I use them on my hunting arrows. One of the best trades I ever made.

I got about 4 dozen left I need to sell.  Spines are 50-65 if I recall correctly.

I checked out the box of Chundoo.  11 shafts in 50-55, 3 dozen in 55-60, and 7 shafts in 60-65.  Matched as close as possible in weight.  I saw one with too much grain run out.  Most were fairly straight grain.  Any offers?

I bought 60 chundoo shafts  from twig archery a number of years ago. It made a really nice, tough arrow...!!! Stronger and tougher than Port Orford cedar.....Right along with Douglas fir in my opinion.....good arrow shaft choice if you like Woody's....:-D

The last shafts I bought, were from you, Larry!

At Cloverdale, about 4 years ago. I would like those 60-65 shafts, sir.

Just started building my arrows last evening. I put a coat of spar urethane on two of them and stained the other one dark walnut! Exicited  to get them finished and start shooting them!
